SUMMARY:Kristján Magnússon: Back Yards
DESCRIPTION:Back yards\, sheds\, clothes-lines\, and now and then a cat. Photographer Kristján Magnússon trains his lens exclusively on a narrow\, enclosed swath of the urban environment: the back-lots of residential areas in the older parts of Reykjavik. He captures images of almost-deserted spaces that seem well thought-out despite the cluttered surroundings. This photo series strongly conveys the stylistic traits of this veteran ad photographer. \n\nKristján Magnússon (1931-2003) studied photography with Pétur Thomsen around 1960. In the same period he took pictures for the magazine Vikan and the newspaper Tíminn. In 1967 Kristján struck out on his own\, opened a photography studio\, and over the years shot many photos for ad agencies. Ingimundur\, Kristján’s twin brother\, later joined the business\, and the two men worked together from 1978 to 1998. \nThe National Museum Collection of Photographs and Prints received Kristján’s collected works in 2004. Among them was the series Back Yards. Kristján himself had selected\, processed\, and prepared the photographs for exhibition but they are now on view to the public for the first time.

DESCRIPTION:The Portrait Collection is a part of the Photographic Collection of the National Museum. It contains different types of portraits\, including paintings\, photographs\, needlework\, and sculptures. The Portrait collection has a large and diverse range\, from snapshots to invaluable pieces of art. SUMMARY:Marino Thorlacius: Straumnes
DESCRIPTION:Straumnesfjall mountain rises between Aðalvík to the south and Rekavík to the north\, now within Hornstrandir Nature Reserve in the Westfjords. During the cold war the US army erected a radar station on the mountain\, which it operated for only three years\, between 1958 and 1961. In 1991 the mountain and its surroundings were cleared of the ruins in a cooperation between the US army and Icelandic authorities. Nonetheless\, clear traces of this operation are still visible on the mountain. \nThe photographer Marino Thorlacius photographed the area in 2015 and again in 2019 and shares his vision of what remains of the radar station at this remote place. The sublime natural beauty and the ever-changing weather offer a backdrop to the photographs depicting relics of bygone times. When the lingering fog lifts and light clears the view over the level mountain top\, concrete blocks lying around catch the eye. Debris of timber and iron that lies half buried at the edge of the mountain bears witness to a story of the station being bulldozed over the edge. Do these scattered remains denote a pollution disaster\, or are they cultural heritage? \n\n\nBuilding and operating a radar station in this secluded location was indeed a daunting effort and the army soon gave up. DESCRIPTION:Straumnesfjall stendur milli Aðalvíkur í suðri og Rekavíkur í norðri og er nú hluti af friðlandinu á Hornströndum. Þar byggði og starfrækti bandaríski herinn ratsjárstöð á tímum kalda stríðsins. Stöðin starfaði aðeins í tæp þrjú ár\, frá árinu 1958 til 1961. Hreinsun á fjallinu og nærliggjandi svæðum var framkvæmd árið 1991 í samstarfi hersins og Íslendinga þó enn megi sjá greinileg ummerki um þessa starfsemi á fjallinu. Sýningin Straumnes eru hluti af dagskrá Ljósmyndahátíðar Íslands. \nLjósmyndarinn Marínó Thorlacius ljósmyndaði svæðið árin 2015 og 2019 og deilir hér með okkur sýn sinni á það sem enn stendur af ratsjárstöðinni við ysta haf. Ægifegurð landsins og síbreytilegt veðrið eru bakgrunnur mynda sem sýna leifarnar af því sem var. Þegar þokunni sem gjarna hangir yfir léttir og birtan opnar sýn yfir sléttan fjallstoppinn má sjá steypuklumpa liggja á víð og dreif. Spýtnarusl og járn hálfgrafið í fjallsbrúninni er eins og staðfesting á þeirri sögu að stöðinni hafi verið rutt fram af fjallinu. Eru þetta ummerki um mengunarslys eða eru þetta menningarsögulegar rústir? \nÞað hefur verið þrekraun að byggja og þjónusta ratsjárstöð á þessum afskekkta stað\, enda gafst herinn fljótlega upp. Ólgandi hafið 400 metra fyrir neðan fjallsbrúnina\, varpar upp hljóðmynd af þeim takmörkum sem náttúran setur staðnum og þeim sem þar dvöldu. Maðurinn má sín lítils gegn náttúruöflunum á Straumnesfjalli. \nMarinó Thorlacius sýndi ljósmyndir sínar fyrst árið 2004 og hefur síðan starfað við ljósmyndum. Hann vinnur jöfnum höndum að listrænum verkefnum og auglýsingaljósmyndun. Oft er hann í nánu samstarfi við listamenn og hönnuði og mótar með þeim myndheim verkefnanna. DESCRIPTION:In connection to the touring exhibition In the shadow\, a special exhibition on the first Icelandic female photographer\, Nicoline Weywadt\, will be launched at the Wall on the ground floor of the National Museum of Iceland. On display are a few of her photographs as well as a blueprint of her photographic studio that she built at the farm of Teigarhorn in East-Iceland. \n\nNicoline Weywadt studied photography in Copenhagen during the winter of 1871-72. She lived all her life in East-Iceland\, first in Djúpivogur and later at Teigarhorn. Nicoline portayed mainly people but she photographed also outdoors in Djúpivogur\, Eskifjörður and Seyðisfjörður showing early urbanisation at these places. DESCRIPTION:Í tengslum við farandsýninguna Í skugganum er sérsýning á verkum fyrsta íslenska kvenljósmyndarans\, Nicoline Weywadt\, á Veggnum á 1. hæð Þjóðminjasafns Íslands. Á sýningunni eru nokkrar ljósmyndir hennar auk teikningar af ljósmyndastúdíóinu sem hún lét byggja á Teigarhorni. \n\nNicoline Weywadt lærði ljósmyndun veturinn 1871-72 í Kaupmannahöfn. Hún bjó alla tíð á Austurlandi\, fyrst á Djúpavogi en síðar að Teigarhorni. Nicoline myndaði fyrst og fremst fólk en eftir hana eru einnig útimyndir frá Djúpavogi\, Eskifirði og Seyðisfirði sem sýna upphaf þéttbýlismyndunar á þessum stöðum. Ljósmyndasafn hennar er einstæð heimild um Austfirðinga og Austurland á seinni hluta 19. aldar. \nSafn Nicoline er varðveitt í Ljósmyndasafni Íslands á Þjóðminjasafni auk ljósmyndabúnaðar hennar s.s. myndavélar\, hnakkajárns og baktjalds sem allt er til sýnis á grunnsýningu Þjóðminjasafnsins. \nLjósmynd: Sjálfsmynd af Nicoline Weywadt

DESCRIPTION:The first female photographers. \n\nWomen pioneers of photography are spotlighted in an exhibition that opens on 21 May in the Photography Hall at the National Museum of Iceland. The exhibition In the shadow gives prominence to ten women photographers in Denmark\, Iceland and on the Faroe Islands of the later 19th century. \n\nThe title of the exhibition refers to the women who practiced photography in the shadow. They both stood behind the camera and thus out of the limelight\, and they were in the shadow of their contemporary male colleagues. Sometimes even their husbands were accredited for their works. \nIn the exhibition these women step out of the shadow and take their place within the history of photography. The exhibition sheds light on how they influenced the development of an art form as well as their working conditions in Denmark\, Iceland\, the Faroe Islands\, America\, and Danish West-India. \nThese women were important chroniclers of their times. DESCRIPTION:Konur meðal frumkvöðla í ljósmyndun \n\nKonur í hópi frumkvöðla á sviði ljósmyndunar eru í forgrunni sýningar  í ljósmyndasal Þjóðminjasafns Íslands. Sýningin Í skugganum varpar ljósi á tíu konur sem lögðu stund á ljósmyndun í Danmörku\, Íslandi og Færeyjum á síðari hluta 19. aldar. \n\nYfirskrift sýningarinnar vísar til þess að konurnar stunduðu ljósmyndun í skugganum í tvenns konar skilningi. Þær stóðu bak við myndavélina og utan sviðsljóssins en líka í skugga karlkyns ljósmyndara síns samtíma. Stundum voru verk þeirra jafnvel eignuð eiginmönnum þeirra. \nÁ sýningunni stíga þessar konur út úr skugganum og taka sér rými í sögu ljósmyndunar. Sýningin varpar ljósi á þau áhrif sem kvennljósmyndarar höfðu á þróun listgreinar og þær aðstæður sem þær unnu við í Danmörku\, Íslandi\, Færeyjum\, Ameríku og dönsku Vestur-Indíum. \nÞessar konur voru um margt afar mikilsvirkir skrásetjarar síns samtíma.
