SUMMARY:Steina Vasulka: Of The North
DESCRIPTION:Steina’s gigantic video installation Of the North (2001) is an arresting and captivating work that touches all who see it. In the 1960s the possibility of recording sound and video in real time opened up new dimensions in the world of visual arts. Steina Vasulka and her husband Woody got to know avant-garde artists working in the new media when they were living in New York\, where they ran The Kitchen for a time – a venue for audio and video artists that opened in 1971. That was a time of rapid technological advances in electronic culture\, no less than in space science. Steina (Steinunn Bjarnadóttir Briem) and Woody Vasulka were pioneers who collaborated on a range of research regarding video art and the harnessing of electronic (and later digital) pulses. DESCRIPTION:Á björtum sumarmánuðum sýnir Listasafn Íslands vídeóinnsetninguna Sumarnótt (Death Is Elsewhere) eftir Ragnar Kjartansson sem hann tók upp á íslenskri nótt\, þegar aldrei dimmir. Þetta sjö rása verk er ein þeirra stóru vídeóinnsetninga sem hafa verið áberandi í listsköpun Ragnars síðustu ár þar sem endurtekningar\, tími og rúm leika veigamikið hlutverk. \nÍ Sumarnótt  er sótt á kunnugleg mið þar sem andi rómantíkur og sæluríkis er alls ráðandi. Áhyggjuleysi og angurværð svífur yfir vötnum þar sem ung pör ganga um fábrotið undirlendi og syngja við gítarleik. Með samhverfri mynd og síendurtekinni laglínu dregst áhorfandinn inn í óendanleika hringrásar verksins þar sem feigðinni er haldið fyrir utan um leið og stöðugt er minnt á hana. \nSumarnótt  er tekið upp í Eldhrauni\, skammt frá upptökum hinna sögulegu Skaftárelda sem ollu miklum hörmungum á Íslandi og víða í Evrópu síðla á 18. öld. Ragnar vísar til eldsumbrotanna og sögunnar með vali á staðsetningu og fléttar verkið einnig saman við íslenska listasögu\, til að mynda með vísan í landslagsmyndir Jóns Stefánssonar og ekki síst í sjálfa sumarnóttina sem var íslenskum landslagsmálurum afar kært myndefni framan af síðustu öld\, þegar fyrstu kynslóðir íslenskra listamanna komu fram. \n  \nRagnar Kjartansson fæddist í Reykjavík árið 1976. Hann stundaði nám við Listaháskóla Íslands 1997–2001\, auk skiptináms við Konunglegu listakademíuna í Stokkhólmi. \nRagnar er þekktasti myndlistarmaður þjóðarinnar nú um stundir og eru verk hans sýnd í virtum söfnum víða um heim. \nRagnar var fulltrúi Íslands á Feneyjatvíæringnum árið 2009 og árið 2019 var vídeóinnsetning hans The Visitors  valið besta listaverk 21. aldar af Guardian. SUMMARY:Ragnar Kjartansson: Death is Elsewhere
DESCRIPTION:During the bright summer months\, the National Gallery of Iceland shows the video installation Death Is Elsewhere by Ragnar Kjartansson – filmed one Icelandic summer night\, when darkness never falls. This seven-channel work is one of the large-scale video installations which have been prominent in Ragnar‘s art in recent years\, where repetition\, time and space play important roles. In Death Is Elsewhere the artist returns to familiar territory\, where a romantic utopian spirit reigns. The ambiance is one of insouciance and melancholy as young couples wander through unvarying lowlands\, singing to a guitar accompaniment. The symmetrical picture and constantly repeated melody entice the observer into the work’s unending circularity\, shutting out impending doom while constantly alluding to it. \nDeath Is Elsewhere was filmed in the Eldhraun lava field in south Iceland\, near the volcano which erupted in the historic Skaftá Fires of the late 18th century\, causing devastation in Iceland and affecting climate worldwide. DESCRIPTION:Everything that Muggur touched\, people used to say\, turned to art\, and it was shaped by his remarkable personality. \nGuðmundur Thorsteinsson\, always known as Muggur\, was born in Bíldudalur in the West Fjords in 1891\, and moved to Copenhagen with his family in 1903. He studied art 1911-15 at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. He expressed his ideas in diverse media and methods: he drew in pencil\, pastel and pen\, painted watercolours and oils\, made collages with paper\, embroidered\, sewed\, and carved in wood. \nMuggur was an artist of many talents; in addition to his prolific visual art he was also an actor and singer. He acted in plays\, performed comic songs\, and played the leading role in the film Borgslægtens historie (Sons of the Soil)\, adapted from an Icelandic novel\, which was premiered in 1920. \nThis exhibition brings together works by Muggur in private ownership and those in the National Gallery collection. In 1958 the National Gallery received 46 works by Muggur as a gift from Danish artist Professor Elof Risebye (1892–1961). \nThe exhibition is curated by art historian Kristín G. SUMMARY:Staged Moments
DESCRIPTION:Staged Moments throws light on one of the most diverse divisions of the National Gallery of Iceland collection – the photograph. The works span the period from the 1970s to the present day. Photography’s status as an art form has risen greatly in recent decades; in the past the photograph was not recognised as a legitimate work of art\, due to its quality of reproducibility\, which was seen as inconsistent with the principle of the unique and sublime in the arts. In Iceland\, the use of photographs by conceptual artists in the 1960s and 70s may be said to have led to the medium being appreciated as an art form. \nStaged Moments testifies to the way that photography has flourished as an art over the past fifty years\, establishing the photograph as an art form on equal footing with other\, older-established art media. Staða ljósmyndunar sem listgreinar hefur eflst á síðastliðnum áratugum en lengi vel naut ljósmyndin ekki viðurkenningar sem fullgilt listaverk vegna fjölföldunareiginleika sem þóttu stangast á við hið einstaka og háleita í listum.\nÁ Íslandi má segja að með notkun hugmyndalistamanna á ljósmyndinni á sjöunda og áttunda áratug síðustu aldar hafi miðillinn fyrst farið að njóta athygli sem myndlistarform.\nSýningin Sviðsett augnablik vitnar um þá miklu grósku sem hefur orðið í ljósmyndun sem listsköpun á síðastliðnum fimmtíu árum og fest ljósmyndina í sessi sem myndlistarform til jafns við aðra rótgrónari listmiðla. SUMMARY:Resistance\, Interplay of art and physics
DESCRIPTION:Resistance is an interdisciplinary exhibition that bridges the gap between visual arts and science. The works on display are key works in the collection of the National Gallery of Iceland\, that establish an interesting dialogue between art and science and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. \nThe word Resistance may be read in the context of physics: the measure of a conductive material’s opposition to current flow. Resistance can also signify opposition to consumption\, which responsible citizens must learn to take onboard. In addition\, Resistance also references essential action against climate change and global warming. The arts offer people an opportunity to be influenced\, as art can touch the emotions. Works of art can raise issues which urge the observer to ask him/herself urgent questions. An artistic approach can alter the way people experience the world around them. And artists work with such factors as taste\, perception\, emotion\, conviction\, values and identity\, that are important for a society in the process of formation. Art can also invigorate the human mind\, and show the observer a diversity of viewpoints\, leading them to re-examine their ideas about the world. Addressing matters of nature from various sides facilitates change\, and the evolution of values that is vital on the journey towards a sustainable society. Where all the elements are unique\, we think things through to the end\, reflect\, and construct a new understanding. \nClearly\, a concerted effort is required in order to attain the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals by 2030. That entails integration\, activation and creation of diverse knowledge and perspectives. It demands active participation by all\, and multifarious approaches. Unsustainable consumption by the public is a major problem in society. We must reconsider our patterns of consumption\, and resist excess. \nNothing in the world is separate. Every single thing is a link in a chain\, connected to all the other links. This global chain must remain intact. Chain reactions unite all things and processes into one whole\, thus establishing the premises for equilibrium. Everything in the world\, including the human body\, is made up of energy\, which bonds and unites in closed cycles. The world’s ecosystem is contingent upon powers connected by chain reactions\, like the cogwheels of a clockwork mechanism. If one of the cogwheels is irreversibly damaged\, the equilibrium will also be irreversibly disrupted. Energy is the foundation of all matter\, and affects everything else. The energy that forms one human being also forms all other living things.  Energy is in constant flow and always changing. Speed relates to that energy\, and is also variable. We are all bound together\, and our feelings give rise to a resonance that affects everything and everyone. All energy on earth is subject to similar natural laws\, although its character may differ. DESCRIPTION:Sýningin Viðnám er þverfagleg sýning sem brúar bilið milli myndlistar og vísinda. Verkin á sýningunni eru lykilverk í eigu Listasafns Íslands sem skapa áhugavert samtal myndlistarinnar við vísindaleg málefni og heimsmarkmið Sameinuðu þjóðanna. \nLíta má á orðið viðnám út frá eðlisfræði. Það er samheiti orðsins rafmótstaða\, sem er tregða rafleiðara við að flytja rafstraum. Viðnám getur einnig vísað til viðspyrnu við neyslu sem ábyrgir þegnar verða að tileinka sér. Auk þess vísar viðnám til þeirrar mikilvægu mótstöðu sem við verðum að beita gegn hlýnun jarðar í baráttunni gegn loftslagsbreytingum. Listir gefa fólki tækifæri til að verða fyrir áhrifum\, því listir geta snert við tilfinningum. Listaverk geta vakið upp spurningar sem hvetja áhorfendur til að spyrja sig knýjandi spurninga. Listræn nálgun getur breytt því hvernig fólk upplifir heiminn í kringum sig. Listamenn vinna auk þess með þætti eins og smekk\, skynjun\, tilfinningar\, sannfæringu\, gildi og sjálfsmyndina sem er mikilvæg í samfélagi í mótun. List er líka fær um að efla huga mannsins og sýna áhorfandanum fjölbreytt  sjónarhorn og fá hann til að endurskoða eigin hugmyndir um heiminn. Að fjalla um málefni náttúrunnar frá ólíkum  hliðum auðveldar breytingar og þróun  gildismats sem er nauðsynlegt í ferðalaginu að sjálfbæru samfélagi. Þar sem allar aðstæður eru einstakar hugsum við hlutina til enda\, endurspeglum og byggjum upp nýjan skilning. \nÞað er ljóst að það krefst sameiginlegs átaks að ná sjálfbærnimarkmiðum Sameinuðu þjóðanna fyrir árið 2030.  Það felur í sér að samþætta\, virkja og skapa fjölbreytta þekkingu og sjónarmið. Það krefst virkrar þátttöku allra og fjölbreyttra nálgana. Ósjálfbær ofneysla almennings er stórt vandamál í samfélaginu. Við verðum að taka neysluvenjur okkar til endurskoðunar og veita ofneyslu viðnám. \nEkkert í heiminum stendur eitt og sér. Sérhver hlutur er hlekkur í keðju og er þannig tengdur öllum hinum hlekkjunum. Þessi keðja alheimsins verður að haldast órofin. Keðjuverkunin sameinar alla hluti og ferli í eina heild og skapar þannig forsendur fyrir jafnvægi. Allir hlutir í alheiminum\, þar á meðal mannslíkaminn\, eru samsettir úr orku\, sem tengist og kemur saman í lokuðum hringrásum. Lífríki jarðarinnar er háð keðjuverkandi öflum sem tengjast saman eins og gangverk tannhjóla. Ef eitt tannhjólanna verður fyrir varanlegu hnjaski\, þá raskast jafnvægið sömuleiðis varanlega. Orka er undirstaða alls efnis og hefur áhrif á allt annað. Sú orka sem skapar eina manneskju\, skapar einnig allar aðrar lífverur. Orka er alltaf flæðandi og síbreytileg. Hraðinn er tengdur þessari orku og er einnig breytilegur. Við erum öll samtengd og tilfinningar okkar skapa ómun sem hefur áhrif á allt og alla aðra. Öll orkan á jörðinni byggir á sambærilegum lögmálum þó svo að hún geti haft skýr sérkenni. DESCRIPTION:Sýningin Liðamót / Ode to Join samanstendur annars vegar af teikningum gerðum með olíu og litadufti og hins vegar þrívíðum verkum sem Margrét H. Blöndal mun vinna beint inn í rými sýningarsalarins. Heiti sýningarinnar Liðamót  vísar í þá staðreynd að þar sem þrír eða fleiri liðir koma saman verður til hreyfing. Í verkum Margrétar mótast hreyfingin út frá skilrúmum sem sett verða upp í rýminu\, staðsetningu verkanna og innra samhengi þeirra. Enski hluti titilsins\, Ode to Join\, er hins vegar óður til tengingar þar sem hver skúlptúr eða teikning verður eins og ein eining í pólífónísku tónverki. Verk Margrétar eru handan orða og búa yfir fegurð og yfirskilvitlegu aðdráttarafli enda hefur innsetningum hennar verið líkt við tónaljóð. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMargrét H. Blöndal er fædd árið 1970 í Reykjavík þar sem hún býr og starfar. Margrét útskrifaðist úr fjöltæknideild Myndlista- og handíðaskóla Íslands árið 1993. Árið 1997 lauk hún MFA-gráðu frá Mason Gross School of Arts\, Rutgers University í New Jersey í Bandaríkjunum. Margrét á langan feril að baki og hefur sýnt víða bæði heima og erlendis síðan 1994.

SUMMARY:Margrét H. Blöndal: Ode to Join
DESCRIPTION:The exhibition Liðamót / Ode to Join comprises on the one hand drawings made with oil and powdered pigments\, and on the other three-dimensional pieces to be made directly into the the exhibition venue as a response to to the space. The Icelandic title Liðamót is a reference to the fact that where three or more joints come together\, movement results. In Margrét‘s works\, movement arises from partitions to be installed in the space\, the placement of the works and the relationship between them. On the other hand\, the English part of the title\, Ode to Join\, is an ode to connections\, where each sculpture or drawing becomes one element of a polyphonic music composition. Margrét‘s works transcend words\, and are imbued with beauty and a supernatural attraction – and indeed Margrét‘s installations have been likened to symphonic poems. \nMargrét H. Blöndal was born in 1970 in Reykjavík\, where she lives and works. She graduated in 1993 from the multimedia department of the Icelandic College of Arts and Crafts (precursor of the Iceland University of the Arts). \nIn 1997 she completed her MFA degree from Mason Gross School of Arts\, Rutgers University in New Jersey\, USA. During her long career Margrét has exhibited widely in Iceland and internationally since 1994.

DESCRIPTION:Ingunn Fjóla Ingþórsdóttir’s installation The Only Constant is Changebears an element of familiarity as the artist revisits and combines components from former works in a new manner. The multifaceted piece conforms to its own inner operating system on one hand and the presence of guests on the other\, disguising the starting point of motion. \nThe only constant is change is a materialized reflection\, a celebratory nod even\, towards the systematic thinking which has been Ingunn’s modus operandi\, although currently shown in an expanded version. Through the years Ingunn has developed and worked in alignment with personalized systematic processes; with The Only Constant is Change she shifts her focus towards the technical systems and systemic processes that govern\, directly and indirectly\, humanity and the world at large. The piece evokes questions around algorithms\, coding\, political and economic systems together with internet scrolling alike; putting personal agency and influence into question. \nIngunn Fjóla Ingþórsdóttir (b. 1976) graduated with a MA degree in Fine Art from the Iceland University of the Arts in 2017 and a BA degree in Fine Art from the same institution in 2007. She also holds a BA degree in Art History from the University of Aarhus\, received in 2002. Ingunn works mainly in painting\, weaving and installation. \nIn her work\, Ingunn has an inclination to extend the field of abstract painting into an open system\, where the work is animated by the viewer and the space through direct participation.

DESCRIPTION:Sýninguna Ekkert er víst nema að allt breytist má skoða sem hugleiðingu og jafnvel óð listakonunnar til þeirrar kerfishugsunar sem einkennt hefur verk hennar til þessa en þó í víðara samhengi. Samhliða þróun á eigin hugmyndakerfi beinir Ingunn nú einnig sjónum sínum að þeim tæknilegu og hugmyndafræðilegu kerfum sem stýra\, leynt og ljóst\, mannfólkinu og heiminum í heild. Hvort sem um ræðir algóritma og kóða\, eða litið er til pólitískra kerfa\, fjármálakerfa\, eða persónulegt vafur um internetið er grandskoðað\, þá veltir verkið Ekkert er víst nema að allt breytist upp spurningum um hver sé við stjórnvölinn og hver áhrif og forráð einstaklingsins raunverulega séu. \nÁ sýningunni gætir kunnuglegra stefja frá fyrri verkum sem þó hafa aldrei verið sameinuð áður. Þessi fjölþætta innsetning Ingunnar Fjólu stýrist af mismunandi þáttum\, annars vegar innbyggðu kerfi verksins og hins vegar aðkomu áhorfandans og því óljóst hver aflvaki verksins er hverju sinni. \nIngunn Fjóla Ingþórsdóttir (f. 1976) útskrifaðist með MA-gráðu í myndlist frá Listaháskóla Íslands árið 2017 og BA-gráðu í myndlist frá sömu stofnun árið 2007. Hún er einnig með BA-gráðu í listasögu frá háskólanum í Árósum frá 2002.\nÍ listsköpun sinni fæst Ingunn við ýmsa miðla eins og málverk\, vefnað og innsetningar. Verk hennar fela oft í sér gagnvirkni eða beina þátttöku og teygir hún þannig verkin inn í opið kerfi þar sem þau lifna við fyrir tilstilli áhorfenda og rýmisins.

SUMMARY:Dieter Roth: Jewellery
DESCRIPTION:Dieter Roth (1930—1998) was a pioneer who respected no boundaries: a thinker\, trailblazer\, poet\, musician\, filmmaker and visual artist. A less well-known aspect of his career is that he also made an impression with his creation of innovative jewellery\, starting in Iceland in the late 1950s. \nThe first pieces of jewellery designed by Roth were made in collaboration with his wife\, artist Sigríður Björnsdóttir\, at the kitchen table in their home; but before long they were offered better facilities in the atelier of goldsmith Halldór Sigurðsson at Skólavörðustígur 2 in central Reykjavik \nRoth‘s jewellery\, generally composed of screws\, bolts and other mechanical parts\, could be assembled in various different ways\, and reconfigured. His jewellery-making was characterised by the same approach as his art: he made use of materials that were generally dismissed as waste or refuse\, which he transformed. \nNo two objects are alike; Dieter Roth was familiar with the qualities of the material\, and worked directly with it. In the 1960s Roth embarked on collaboration with Swiss goldsmith Hans Langenbacher; the two men had first met at the atelier of goldsmith Jón Sigmundsson in Reykjavík in 1958\, and been impressed by each other‘s methods\, use of materials\, and skill. \nAt the National Gallery of Iceland\, an opportunity is offered for the first time to see Dieter Roth‘s unique jewellery in a coherent context. The exhibition bears witness to his experimentalism and unconventional methods\, and sheds new light on the oeuvre of this outstandingly versatile artist. \n\nCurator: Björn Roth

DESCRIPTION:Dieter Roth (1930—1998) var í senn brautryðjandi sem virti engar takmarkanir\, hugsuður\, frumkvöðull\, skáld\, tónlistarmaður\, kvikmyndagerðarmaður og myndlistarmaður. Færri vita að hann vakti jafnframt athygli fyrir nýstárlega skartgripasmíði sem hann hóf að fást við á Íslandi seint á sjötta áratug síðustu aldar. \nFyrstu skartgripirnir sem Dieter hannaði voru unnir í samstarfi við konu hans\, Sigríði Björnsdóttur\, heima á eldhúsborðinu og fljótlega bauðst þeim betri aðstaða á verkstæði Halldórs Sigurðssonar gullsmiðs að Skólavörðustíg 2. \nSkartgripi Dieters\, sem hann gerði gjarnan úr skrúfum\, boltum og öðrum mekanískum hlutum\, mátti setja saman á mismunandi vegu og breyta þeim. Nálgun hans við skartgripagerð var hin sama og einkenndi myndlist hans; að nýta ýmiss konar efni sem almennt var talið rusl eða úrgangur og umbreyta því. Engir þessara muna eru eins\, Dieter þekkti eiginleika efniviðarins og vann hugmyndir sínar beint í hann. \nÁ sjöunda áratug síðustu aldar hófu Dieter Roth og svissneski gullsmiðurinn Hans Langenbacher samstarf\, en þeir hittust fyrst á vinnustofu Jóns Sigmundssonar gullsmiðs í Reykjavík 1958 og hrifust mjög af vinnubrögðum\, efnisnotkun og færni hvor annars. \nÍ Listasafni Íslands gefst nú í fyrsta sinn tækifæri til að leiða einstaka skartgripi Dieters augum í heildstæðu samhengi. Sýningin ber tilraunagleði myndlistarmannsins og óvenjulegum vinnuaðferðum hans glöggt vitni og varpar nýju ljósi á verk þessa einstaklega fjölhæfa listamanns. \n\nSýningarstjóri: Björn Roth

DESCRIPTION:Listasafn Íslands er þjóðlistasafn okkar Íslendinga og eitt af hlutverkum þess er að safna myndlist með það að markmiði að endurspegla sem best strauma og stefnur í íslenskri og alþjóðlegri myndlist á hverjum tímaeins og segir í lögum um safnið. Safneignin er yfirgripsmikil og fjölbreytt. DESCRIPTION:One of the roles of the National Gallery of Iceland is to collect art\, with the objective of reflecting as well as possible trends and movements in Icelandic and international art at any time\, as stated in the National Gallery of Iceland Act. The museum’s collections are extensive and diverse. The oldest works in the collection date from the 16th century\, while the most recent are less than one year old; the nucleus of the collection consists of Icelandic art from around 1900 to the present day. Today the collection numbers over 15\,000 works\, and more are added each year. \nThe exhibition Some New Works displays a selection of works which have been purchased by the gallery’s Acquisitions Board or presented to the gallery in recent years. The Exhibition have been curated to highlight systems and repetitions in the work of eleven artists\, which have been made in a range of different media. \nArtists: Anna Júlía Friðbjörnsdóttir\,  Bjarni H. SUMMARY:Forty Years of The Corridor
DESCRIPTION:The Corridor is an artist-run exhibition space founded by artist Helgi Þorgils Friðjónsson in 1979\, and it is probably Iceland’s longest-running privately-operated gallery. The Corridor has always been housed in Helgi Þorgils‘  home; the gallery‘s first exhibition\, of For the Time Being by Hreinn Friðfinnsson early in 1980\, was held at Laufásvegur 79. The Corridor moved on to Mávahlíð 24\, then Freyjugata 32 and Rekagrandi 8. It is now located at Brautarholt 8; in 2017–18 the Corridor had a branch at Kárastígur 9 in Hofsós\, north Iceland\, when Helgi spent a year there with his family. \nHelgi‘s principal objective in founding an exhibition space in his home was to present the work of contemporary artists from other countries in Iceland; at that time there was little opportunity to see international contemporary art in Iceland. Helgi had previously been involved in the foundation and operation of a number of exhibition spaces\, such as Gallery Output\, founded in 1975 with Þór Vigfússon\, Gallery Suðurgata 7\, Gallery Lóa in Haarlem\, Netherlands\, and Gallery Vísir in the Vísir newspaper\, all founded in 1976\, and the Living Art Museum\, 1978. \nIt is hardly possible to enumerate all the contemporary artists who have shown their work at the Corridor in the 42 years it has been in operation. The vast majority are non-Icelandic artists\, some internationally renowned. The artists who have displayed their work at the Corridor make art in a range of media\, and Helgi has sought to exhibit the work of artists representative of other artistic trends than those which have predominated in Iceland\, such as hyperrealism\, magical realism\, neo-surrealism\, the geometric abstract\, and conceptual art. Among them are Karin Kneffel\, Milan Kunc\, Helmut Federle\, Stephen McKenna\, James Rielly\, Jan Knap\, Sigrid Sandstrom\, Robert Devriendt\, Jenny Watson\, Thomas Huber\, Lisa Milroy\, John Zürier\, Urs Luthi and\, last but not least\, the Swiss artist Martin Disler\, who was the first foreign artist to show his work in the Corridor\, in 1980. Many of these artists have established bonds with Iceland and the Icelanders\, and they have enriched Icelandic art in various ways\, such as through teaching at the Icelandic College of Arts and Crafts (precursor of the Iceland University of the Arts)\, through participation in exhibitions at Iceland’s leading galleries\, and by promoting Icelandic artists abroad. Many of the artists have spent time in Iceland\, and some of their art evinces influence from their stay – so the impact may be deemed reciprocal.

SUMMARY:Gallerí Gangur í 40 ár
DESCRIPTION:Gallerí Gangur er listamannarekið sýningarrými sem stofnað var af myndlistarmanninum Helga Þorgils Friðjónssyni árið 1979 og er líklega elsta einkarekna gallerí landsins sem starfað hefur samfellt frá stofnun. Gangurinn hefur alla tíð verið rekinn á heimili Helga\, en starfsemin hófst með sýningu á verki Hreins Friðfinnssonar For the Time Being snemma árs 1980 að Laufásvegi 79. Frá Laufásveginum flutti Gangurinn í Mávahlíð 24\, síðan á Freyjugötu 32\, þaðan á Rekagranda 8\, og er nú í Brautarholti 8 en árin 2017–2018 hafði Gangurinn einnig útibú á Kárastíg 9 á Hofsósi á meðan Helgi bjó þar ásamt fjölskyldu sinni um eins árs skeið. \nMeginmarkmið Helga með stofnun sýningarrýmisins á heimili sínu var að kynna myndlist erlendra samtímalistamanna hér á landi\, en þegar galleríið var stofnað var kynning erlendrar samtímalistar hérlendis mjög fátíð. Þess má geta að Helgi hafði áður komið að stofnun og rekstri nokkurra sýningarrýma og má þar nefna Gallerí Output sem hann stofnaði ásamt Þóri Vigfússyni árið 1975\, Gallerí Suðurgötu 7\, Gallery Lóu í Haarlem í Hollandi og Gallerí Vísi í dagblaðinu Vísi\, sem öll voru stofnuð árið 1976\, sem og Nýlistasafnið árið 1978. \nVarla verður komið tölu á fjölda þeirra samtímalistamanna sem sýnt hafa verk sín í Ganginum á þeim 42 árum sem galleríið hefur verið starfrækt. Langflestir þeirra eru erlendir listamenn og sumir þekktir á alþjóðavísu. Þeir listamenn sem sýnt hafa í Ganginum fást við myndlist í ýmsum miðlum og hefur Helgi leitast við að sýna verk listamanna sem vinna með aðra strauma en tíðkast á Íslandi\, t.d. ofurraunsæi\, töfraraunsæi\, ný-súrrealisma\, geómetrísk flatarmálverk og hugmyndalist/konseptlist. Meðal þeirra eru Karin Kneffel\, Milan Kunc\, Helmut Federle\, Stephen McKenna\, James Rielly\, Jan Knap\, Sigrid Sandstrom\, Robert Devriendt\, Jenny Watson\, Thomas Huber\, Lisa Milroy\, John Zürier\, Urs Luthi og síðast en ekki síst svissneski listamaðurinn Martin Disler sem sýndi fyrstur erlendra listamanna í Ganginum árið 1980. Margir þessara listamanna hafa tengst landi og þjóð og haft áhrif á og auðgað íslenskt myndlistarlíf á margvíslegan hátt\, t.d. með kennslu í Myndlista- og handíðaskóla Íslands\, með þátttöku í sýningum í helstu söfnum landsins og með því að kynna íslenska listamenn erlendis. Þá hafa margir listamannanna dvalið um lengri eða skemmri tíma á Íslandi og má til að mynda merkja áhrif þess í ákveðnum verkum þeirra\, svo að segja má að áhrifin séu á báða bóga.

DESCRIPTION:At the beginning of 2022\, the art collection of Ingibjörg Guðmundsdóttir and entrepreneur Þorvaldur Guðmundsson was placed in the permanent keeping of the National Gallery of Iceland. The collection\, which includes paintings\, drawings\, prints\, sculptures\, reliefs etc.\, is one of Iceland’s largest private collections. It comprises about 1400 works by many of Iceland’s leading artists\, among them about 400 by Jóhannes S. Kjarval\, who was a close friend of the couple.

DESCRIPTION:Í upphafi árs 2022 var listaverkasafn hjónanna Ingibjargar Guðmundsdóttur og Þorvaldar Guðmundssonar\, sem kenndur var við Síld og fisk\, afhent Listasafni Íslands til framtíðarvörslu. Safnið\, sem samanstendur meðal annars af málverkum\, teikningum\, grafíkverkum\, höggmyndum og lágmyndum\, er með stærstu einkasöfnum hér á landi og telur um 1400 verk eftir marga af helstu listamönnum þjóðarinnar. Þar af eru um 400 verk eftir Jóhannes S. Kjarval sem var mikill vinur þeirra hjóna.

DESCRIPTION:Sýningin Fram fjörðinn\, seint um haust samanstendur af stórum vatnslitaverkum máluðum á síðustu tveimur árum þar sem lífríki Héðinsfjarðar seint um haust er aðalviðfangsefni listamannsins Sigtryggs Bjarna Baldvinssonar. Undanfarin 17 ár hefur vaxandi hluti verka Sigtryggs átt uppruna sinn í Héðinsfirði\, eyðifirði sem liggur á milli Ólafsfjarðar og Siglufjarðar á Tröllaskaga\, þar sem listamaðurinn hefur skrásett náttúruna í firðinum í gegnum athöfnina að mála.

DESCRIPTION:The exhibition Into the Valley in Late Autumn is made up of large watercolours painted in the past two years; artist Sigtryggur Bjarni Baldvinsson focusses on the natural environment in Héðisfjörður\, north Iceland\, in late autumn. Over the past 17 years\, Sigtryggur’s art has increasingly been inspired by Héðinsfjörður\, an uninhabited fjord between Ólafsfjörður and Siglufjörður\, where the artist has been documenting nature through the act of painting.

DESCRIPTION:Á sýningunni má sjá úrval verka sem Listasafn Íslands hefur\, samkvæmt tillögum innkaupanefndar safnsins\, keypt á undanförnum fjórum árum. Hugmyndin með sýningu á nýjum aðföngum í safneigninni er sú að varpa ljósi á mikilvægan þátt í starfsemi safnsins og á þær áherslur sem endurspeglast í innkaupum hverju sinni. \nÁ sýninguna hafa verið valin verk eftir 12 listamenn sem fjalla með ýmsum hætti um tengsl manns og náttúru\, auk þess að gefa góða mynd af ólíkum sjónarhornum\, aðferðum og efnistökum í listsköpun samtímans. Verkin á sýningunni birta sjónarhorn sem mótað er af mannlegri reynslu og viðhorfum\, eða eins og Anna Guðjónsdóttir orðar það í tengslum við landslagshefð í málaralist: „Fyrir mér er landslag skapað af manneskjunni\, sem sagt náttúra höfð á þann veg sem við viljum hafa hana\, sjá hana\, nota hana.“ Verk hennar byggir á æskuminningum frá Þingvöllum\, miðlægum stað í þjóðarvitundinni. Staðir og minningar sem þeim tengjast mynda raunar leiðarstef á sýningunni\, hvort sem um ræðir Þingvelli\, Þjórsá\, Dyrfjöll\, Heklu eða Mosfellssveit\, smágerða náttúruheima\, erlenda almenningsgarða eða heilu heimsálfurnar. Myndverkin geta einnig birt áhorfandanum táknræna\, ímyndaða eða huglæga staði\, þótt þeir finnist ekki á landakortum. \nÍ endursköpun sinni á stöðum hafa listamennirnir ýmist mótað áferð þeirra og lögun í leir eða önnur efni\, fangað ásýnd þeirra í málverk\, vefnað\, á filmu eða í stafrænan miðil\, eða jafnvel hnikað vettvanginum til með því að taka úr honum sýnishorn. Í öllum tilvikum hefur átt sér stað einhvers konar umbreyting sem gefur til kynna hið menningarlega sjónarhorn eða afmörkun listamannsins. Verkin eiga það sameiginlegt að vekja okkur til vitundar um tengsl menningar og náttúru\, oft með gagnrýnum undirtónum sem tengjast verndunarsjónarmiðum og endurmati á stöðu mannsins á viðsjárverðum tímum í kjölfar iðnvæðingar\, ofnýtingar og ágangs gagnvart jörðinni. Með verkum sínum varpa listamennirnir fram grundvallarspurningum: Hvaðan komum við? Hvert stefnum við? Hvaða ábyrgð berum við á umhverfi okkar og náttúrunni?

SUMMARY:Some Recent Works - new acquistions
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition presents a selection of works that have been purchased by the National Gallery of Iceland in the past four years\, on the recommendation of the gallery’s acquisitions board. By holding an exhibition of recent acquisitions\, the intention is to provide insight into this important aspect of the gallery’s work and the priorities that guide acquisitions at any time. \nWorks by twelve artists have been selected for the exhibition; all of them address\, in one way or another\, the relationship between humans and nature\, while also providing a good overview of diverse viewpoints\, methods and approaches in contemporary art. The works on display present a perspective that is informed by human experience and attitudes\, as Anna Guðjónsdóttir puts it in the context of the landscape tradition in painting: “As I see it\, landscape is created by the individual; in other words\, we have nature in the way we want it\, to see it and use it.” Her work is grounded in her childhood memories from Þingvellir\, the ancient parliamentary site which has a central place in Icelanders’ national consciousness. Places\, and memories that relate to them\, make up a leitmotiv in the exhibition\, whether the connection is with Þingvellir\, the Þjórsá river\, the Dyrfjöll mountains\, Mt. Hekla or Mosfellssveit\, tiny natural worlds\, public parks in other countries\, or entire continents. The works of art can also present to the observer symbolic\, imaginary or subjective places\, not to be found on maps. \nIn their recreation of places\, the artists have moulded their texture or shape in clay or other materials\, captured their appearance in paint or textile\, on film or digital media\, or even shifted the site by taking and displaying samples from it. In every case\, some kind of transformation has taken place that hints at the artist’s cultural perspective or demarcation. The works share the quality of raising our consciousness of the relationship between culture and nature\, often with a critical undertone relating to nature conservation\, and a re-evaluation of humanity’s place in these hazardous times arising from industrial development\, overuse of resources and encroachment on the environment of the earth. Through their art\, the artists pose fundamental questions: Where do we come from? Where are we going? What are our responsibilities for nature and our environment?
