SUMMARY:A Meeting with Eldfell
DESCRIPTION:The exhibition A Meeting with Eldfell emerged from an ongoing conversation between two artists\, a curator and an anthropologist about their shared love of Eldfell\, resulting in a collaborative project marking the 50th anniversary of the volcano’s birth in 1973. \nThroughout its short geologic life\, Eldfell and the story of its eruption has inspired people around the world. They have approached the volcano from their own perspectives\, to get to know and sense this remarkable place. For this exhibition we will bring together\, for the very first time\, newly commissioned and existing work from over twenty Icelandic and international artists\, writers and researchers exploring Eldfell; alongside significant scientific and archival material such as the first seismogram indicating the eruption\, volcanic core samples and original geological field-notebooks. The exhibition will include drawings\, paintings\, textiles\, photographs\, prints\, geologic sculptures\, film\, and text. \n“This artist-led initiative has grown into a communal biography of the volcano. We hope it will help foster an ongoing archive on Eldfell\, connecting those who have visited the volcano with the many people who call the island their home. As people meet Eldfell on their own terms\, whether those who fled the island in the middle of the night when the eruption started or grandchildren climbing up to the crater for the first time – it is a volcanic reminder that we are part of a growing geosocial family with shared responsibility that extends across the surface of the Earth\,” say the co-curators\, Ilana Halperin and Vala Pálsdóttir. \nThe exhibition will feature works by artists\, writers and researchers: Anna Líndal\, Adam Putnam\, Ayan Farah\, Áslaug Íris Katrín Friðjónsdóttir\, Dieter Roth\, Emma Stibbon\, Frank Siteman\, Genya Turovskaya\, George Carman\, Gísli Pálsson\, Hugh Raffles\, Ilana Halperin\, Jesse Bransford\, John McPhee\, Keith Grant\, Kirsty Badenoch\, Kristján Steingrímur\, Ragna Róbertsdóttir and Þorgerður Ólafsdóttir with printed matter by SITE\, Inc./Alison Sky and Robert Smithson \nImage Credit: On the way to Eldfell\, May 6th\, 2023\, c-print\, Ilana Halperin. SUMMARY:Til fundar við Eldfell
DESCRIPTION:Til fundar við Eldfell er ávöxtur af samtali tveggja listamanna\, sýningastjóra og mannfræðings um sameiginlegan áhuga þeirra á Eldfelli\, sem leiddi af sér samstarfsverkefni í tilefni 50 ára afmælis eldfjallsins. \nÁ sinni stuttu ævi hefur Eldfell og sagan um gosið veitt fólki um allan heim innblástur. Það hefur sótt eldfjallið heim\, hvert á sínum forsendum\, til að kynnast og upplifa þennan merka stað. Á sýningunni  verður í fyrsta sinn dregið saman safn verka\, bæði nýrra og eldri\, eftir um tuttugu íslenska og erlenda listamenn\, rithöfunda og fræðimenn sem hafa rannsakað Eldfell. Þá verða einnig sýnd mikilvæg gögn úr söfnum\, svo sem fyrsta skjálftaritið\, jarðskjálftamyndin sem benti til goss\, sýni úr borkjarna frá hrauni Eldfells og dagbækur jarðfræðinga frá dögum gossins. Á sýningunni verða teikningar\, málverk\, textíll\, ljósmyndir\, þrykk\, jarðfræðilegir skúlptúrar\, kvikmyndir og ritaður texti. \n„Sýningunni hefur vaxið fiskur um hrygg undir forystu undirbúningshópsins\, og hún er orðin vísir að margþættri ævisögu eldfjallsins. Við vonum að þetta sé upphafið að því að haldið verði utan um safn verka um Eldfell\, sem tengi saman gesti\, sem sótt hafa Eldfell heim\, og Vestmannaeyinga. Fólk mætir Eldfelli á mismunandi forsendum. Hvort sem um er að ræða þau sem flúðu eyjuna um miðja nótt þegar gosið hófst eða barnabörnin sem nú eru að fikra sig upp eftir fjallinu í fyrsta skipti  eru samskiptin við fjallið ávallt áminning um að við erum hluti af vaxandi jarðfélagslegri fjölskyldu með sameiginlega ábyrgð sem teygist um alla jörð\,“ segja sýningarstjórarnir\, Ilana Halperin og Vala Pálsdóttir. \nÁ sýningunni verða verk eftir listamenn\, rithöfunda og fræðimenn.
