DESCRIPTION:Sýningin Hið þögla en göfuga mál er yfirlitssýning um ljósmyndaferil Sigurhans Vignir* (1894-1975) en hann starfaði sem ljósmyndari frá 1917 til 1965\, lengst af í Reykjavík. \nVignir skildi eftir sig verðmætt filmusafn sem varðveitt er á Ljósmyndasafni Reykjavíkur. Í því eru ríflega 40 þúsund myndir\, flestar teknar á árunum 1940-1965. Margar þeirra eru þýðingar-miklar heimildir um mannlíf og uppbyggingu íslensks þjóðfélags á fyrstu áratugum lýðveldisins. Viðfangsefnin eru af ýmsum toga en tengjast oftast fjölskrúðugu atferli manneskjunnar frá vöggu til grafar s.s.; skírn barns\, stofnun lýðveldis\, verkafólk við vinnu\, skautahlaup\, hernám á hlutlausu þjóðríki\, fegurðarsamkeppni í Tívolí\, afmæli\, hárkollugerð o.s.frv. \nVignir tók fjölda mynda fyrir Reykjavíkurborg og eru margar þeirra mikilvægar heimildir um starfsemi sveitarfélagsins\, sögu þess og þróun. \nÞá var Vignir einnig mikilvirkur leikhúsljósmyndari og tók myndir fyrir Þjóðleikhúsið\, Leikfélag Reykjavíkur og önnur minni leikfélög. \nÁ sýningunni verður um 110 nýjar stækkanir gerðar eftir upprunalegum filmum auk nokkurs af frummyndum\, bæði portrett og handlitaðar landslagsmyndir. \nSýningarstjórn og myndaval: Gísli Helgason\, Sigríður Kristín Birnudóttir og Kristín Hauksdóttir. \n*27. ágúst 1918 fékk Sigurhans ráðherrabréf sem veitti honum leyfi til að taka upp ættarnafnið Vignir. SUMMARY:Sigurhans Vignir: The Silent but Noble Art
DESCRIPTION:The Silent but Noble Art is a retrospective exhibition featuring the career of Sigurhans Vignir (1894-1975)\, who worked as a photographer from 1917 to 1965\, mostly in Reykjavík. \nVignir left behind a valuable photographic archive\, now preserved at the Reykjavík Museum of Photography\, which comprises around 40\,000 photographs – most of them taken between 1940 and 1965. Many of the images are significant documents of Icelandic society and how it developed in the years after the Republic of Iceland was founded in 1944. Vignir photographed a wide range of subjects\, often focussing on individuals on every kind of occasion from cradle to grave: a christening\, the foundation of the Republic\, labourers at work\, people skating\, the occupation of Iceland during World War II by British troops\, a beauty pageant\, a birthday party\, a wigmaker… and so on. \nVignir took many photographs for the City of Reykjavík\, documenting the many aspects of the municipality’s activities. DESCRIPTION:„Eitt af viðfangsefnum mínum í myndsköpun er að nýta mér nærumhverfið séð frá mismunandi sjónarhornum. Hlutir í umhverfinu taka sífelldum breytingum\, fá mismunandi tilgang eftir því hvenær og hvernig maður horfir á þá.“ (Anna Elín Svavarsdóttir 2017) \nEftir andlát Önnu Elínar vaknaði áhugi fjölskyldunnar á að sýna hluta verka hennar. Verkin endurspegla feril hennar sem listræns ljósmyndara en Anna Elín hafði einstaklega næmt auga fyrir hinu myndræna í umhverfinu og myndaði fjölbreytileg mótíf. \nAnna Elín útskrifaðist sem ljósmyndari árið 1987. Hún lærði hjá Leifi Þorsteinssyni og að hluta til hjá Guðmundi Ingólfssyni. Eftir útskrift vann hún á Ljósmyndasafni Reykjavíkur frá 1987- 1989 og frá 1994-1998 sem yfirmaður myndadeildar. \nEftir það hóf hún feril sem sjálfstætt starfandi ljósmyndari og vann meðal annars sem ljósmyndari á tökustað í kvikmyndum. Árið 2011 stofnaði hún fyrirtækið Lífssögu og sérhæfði sig í lífssögugerð í máli og myndum. \nMeðal samsýninga og ljósmyndaverkefna sem hún tók þátt í má nefna Ljósmyndakeppni Arkitektur Háskólans Íslands þar sem verk hennar hlaut fyrstu verðlaun og er síðan í eigu Háskóla Íslands.

DESCRIPTION:“One of my objectives in image creation is to make use of the immediate environment\, viewed from different angles. SUMMARY:Sigurður Unnar Birgisson: Hilmir snýr heim
DESCRIPTION:Sýningin „Hilmir snýr heim“ eftir ljósmyndarann og myndlistarmanninn Sigurð Unnar Birgisson samanstendur af stækkuðum passamyndum af karlmönnum um sjötugt ásamt blómamyndum úr náttúru Íslands eftir Hjálmar R. Bárðarson (1918-2009). \nÞað kann að þykja óvenjulegt að stilla þessum tveimur myndefnum upp saman. Hvað gætu rosknir karlar átt sameiginlegt með blómum? Við fyrstu sýn virðist það ekki vera margt annað en að hefðbundinni\, raunsærri nálgun er beitt í báðum tilfellum auk þess sem greina má  samhljóm með myndformum. Sýningin veltir þó upp djúpstæðari spurningum þar sem kafað er undir yfirborðið og hlutirnir settir í stærra samhengi. \nMyndirnar af karlmönnunum eru allar teknar á vinnustað ljósmyndara\, Passamyndum\, vegna endurnýjunar ökuskírteinis þeirra við 70 ára aldur. Sigurður Unnar hefur því tekið fjölmargar slíkar myndir í sínu starfi\, sem hefur gefið honum færi á að sjá og skilgreina þær sem afmarkað viðfangsefni sem hann velur að nálgast sem listform. Karlarnir standa allir á tímamótum\, starfsævinni að ljúka og eftirlaun taka við. Til að fá dýpri innsýn í líf þeirra og í hvað þeir vörðu tíma sínum hitti Sigurður Unnar þá einnig utan ljósmyndastofunnar. Afrakstur þess eru auk myndanna textaverk og stuttmynd sem veita dýpri innsýn inn í heila starfsævi. \nVið starfslok verða óumflýjanlega miklar breytingar og við tekur vegferð í átt til andlegrar endurskoðunar. Þetta getur leitt til hugljómunar þar sem manneskjan getur sprungið út eins og blóm\, sagt skilið við þungann\, leyft andanum að lyfta sér og opnast á mót sólu. Sagan segir að Búdda hafi haldið blómi á lofti án orða fyrir framan hóp lærisveina sinna. Þeir horfðu á hann og blómið til skiptis um stund. Loks breiddist lítið bros á varir eins þeirra. Sagt er að brosið marki upphaf Zen búddisma. \nEinnig bendir þýski rithöfundurinn Eckhart Tolle á að blóm séu hugsanlega það fyrsta sem manneskjur dáðu aðeins fyrir fegurð sína. Þau birtist okkur sem sendiboðar og leiðarvísar í átt að hinu háleita\, heilaga og óhlutbundna sem vaki innra með hverju og einu okkar. \nSigurður Unnar segir: „Herrarnir á sýningunni eru mín blóm. Ég dái þá fyrir fegurð þeirra og þeir eru minn leiðarvísir í átt að því hvernig á að lifa sem karlmaður. Þeir komu allir í myndatöku til mín og suma þeirra hitti ég aftur.“ Kjarnann í samlíkingu herranna og blómanna er svo að finna í  6. kafla Mattheusarguðspjalls\, versi 28: „Hyggið að liljum vallarins\, hversu þær vaxa. Hvorki vinna þær né spinna.“ \nBlómamyndir Hjálmars R. Bárðarson birtust í bók hans Íslenskur gróður árið 1998. Hann var afkastamikill ljósmyndari og gaf út fjölda ljósmyndabóka. Myndasafn Hjálmars er varðveitt í Þjóðminjasafni Íslands sem veitti góðfúslegt leyfi fyrir notkun myndanna á sýningunni. \nSigurður Unnar Birgisson býr í Reykjavík og starfar á ljósmyndastofunni Passamyndir. Hann útskrifaðist með BA og MA gráðu frá Universität der Künste í Berlín árið 2015 undir handleiðslu Mariu Vedder. Frá því að hann lauk námi hefur hann komið að innsetningum á listahátíðinni „Háskar“\, lesið upp dagbókarfærslu sem hluta af gjörningi í Mengi\, listamannareknu rými í Reykjavík\, leikstýrt föður sínum í tónlistarmyndabandi við lag Teits Magnússonar „Bara þú“ og unnið fyrir Reykjavík Dance Festival í samstarfi við Michikazu Matsune að verkinu „The Viewers“.

SUMMARY:Sigurður Unnar Birgisson: The Return of the King
DESCRIPTION:The exhibition The Return of the King by photographer/artist Sigurður Unnar Birgisson comprises enlargements of passport-sized photographs of men aged about seventy\, alongside photographs of flowers of Icelandic nature by renowned Icelandic photographer Hjálmar R. Bárðarson (1918-2009). \nThe juxtaposition of these two subjects may seem unusual. What could elderly men have in common with flowers? At first glance\, all they seem to share is the use of a conventional\, realistic approach in both cases – and also a harmony of form between them. But the exhibition poses deeper questions\, delving beneath the surface to view the broader context. \nThe photos of the men were all taken at the Passamyndir photographic studio\, when they had to renew their driving licences at age 70. The outcome of that work is a text-work and short film which provide a more profound insight into a whole career. \nRetirement inevitably means major changes\, leading to a path towards spiritual re-evaluation. This can give rise to an awakening\, whereby a person can bloom like a flower\, bid heaviness goodbye\, allow the spirit to rise up and open out towards the sun. The Buddha is said to have wordlessly held up a flower before a group of his disciples. For a time they looked from Buddha to the flower and back again. Finally a little smile appeared on one of their faces. The smile is said to signify the beginning of Zen Buddhism. German author Eckhart Tolle has also pointed out that flowers may have been the first thing that humans admired purely for their beauty. They appear to us as heralds\, pointing our way to the sublime\, the sacred\, the intangible that lies within every one of us. \nSigurður Unnar says: “The gentlemen in the exhibition are my flowers. I admire them for their beauty\, and they are my guide towards how to live as a man. They all came to me to have their photos taken\, and I met some of them again later.” The essence of the analogy between the men and the flowers is found in the Gospel of St. Matthew\, 6:28: “Consider the lilies of the field\, how they grow; they toil not\, neither do they spin.“ \nHjálmar R. Bárðarson’s flower pictures were published in his book Íslenskur gróður (Icelandic Vegetation) in 1998. He was a prolific photographer\, who published many photographic books. DESCRIPTION:Eyðibýli á landsbyggðinni hafa lengi átt athygli Guðmundar Óla Pálmasonar og veitt honum innblástur fyrir listræna sköpun. Verk Guðmundar Óla virka eins og óræðar glefsur úr fortíðinni fyrir tilstilli gamallar ljósmyndatækni sem hann hefur sérhæft sig í. \nMikilvægur þáttur verksins „Yfirgefin list“\, sem sjá má á þessari sýningu\, er gjörningur sem Guðmundur Óli hófst handa við fyrir rúmu ári. Þar skilur hann eftir nokkur af verkunum á víðavangi\, fyrir hvern sem er að finna og eiga\, oftast á þeim stöðum þar sem myndirnar voru teknar eða tengdum stöðum. Þó Guðmundur Óli sé fæddur og uppalinn í Reykjavík hefur hann aldrei fundið sig í borgarumhverfi og veltir fyrir sér þeirri stóru spurningu hvort tenging sé á milli þess að fólk hafi að mestu yfirgefið sveitir landsins til að búa í borg og bæjum og þess rofs sem hefur orðið við náttúru og andleg málefni. Með því að skilja verkin eftir – yfirgefa þau – leitast hann við að svara þessari spurningu og til þess vísar titill sýningarinnar. \n“Ég er hrifinn af hugmyndinni um að listin fari heilan hring\, komi aftur heim. Sérstaklega vegna þess að viðfangsefnið er eyðibýli\, og mér finnst sem ég sé að gefa þeim einhverskonar líf aftur\, að ég sé að gefa þeim nýjan tilgang.” \nÞannig eru eyðibýli í verkum hans ekki myndir af húsum\, heldur fólki\, á mörkum fortíðar og nútíðar; fólki sem er horfið á braut og eftir standa spurningar sem er ósvarað um líf þess\, dauða og hvers vegna enginn tók við búinu. Er nútímafólk\, rétt eins og yfirgefnu húsin\, tóm ílát sem andinn hefur yfirgefið? \nGuðmundur notast eingöngu við útrunnar Polaroid-flysju-filmur (peel-apart)\, sem hann handvinnur með ýmis konar spilliefnum. SUMMARY:Guðmundur Óli Pálmason: Abandoned Art
DESCRIPTION:Abandoned farmsteads in the Icelandic countryside have long captured the eye of Guðmundur Óli Pálmason and inspired his artmaking. In his works the viewer meets obscure fragments from the past\, which he captures with an old photography method he has specialized in. \nAn important part of the work „Leaving Art“\, here on show\, can be catagorized as a performance\, which Pálmason started executing over a year ago. DESCRIPTION:The project “Betula Seasons” is a photography series by Elías Arnar of the Downy Birch tree of Iceland transitioning throughout all four seasons. The idea was born from a geographical approach about how important this particular species of tree is to Iceland both historically\, culturally and environmentally. The Betula pubescens is the only native tree in Iceland that can form natural forests\, usually characterized by high biodiversity and productivity. \nSources have indicated that due to the country‘s isolation during the settlement\, the tree was the backbone of peoples lives as it was used for building material for all sorts of craft. Today\, this is of course considered to be an unsustainable extract of a very fragile resource but one can‘t help to wonder if the history and cultural heritage of Iceland would be the same if it were not for these actions. \nElías Arnar is an Icelandic freelance photographer\, park ranger and geography student. He focuses his work primarily on the geographical landscape\, aiming to represent a connection between people and nature to promote awareness about climate change\, environmental issues and outdoor activities. DESCRIPTION:Since 2016 Jessica Auer has been documenting the impact of mass tourism on Icelandic landscape and society. \nWorking between Canada and her studio in Iceland\, Jessica‘s travels between these countries coincided with the tourism boom and as such\, she navigated the gap between being a foreigner and a local. She saw both sides of the tourist gaze and sought to share this experience through photography and video. \nWhen travel came to a standstill during the pandemic\, Jessica’s work took a significant turn\, reflecting on the value systems of this boom and bust industry. Her most recent photographs turn their attention towards landscape conservation\, and the efforts to protect areas vulnerable to exploitation during the uncertainty of a global pandemic. \nThroughout these last years\, Jessica has travelled around the country with a large format view camera\, capturing portraits of park rangers\, wardens and other people who occupy this environment. \nThese exchanges created the opportunity to discuss the cultural and natural value of the Icelandic landscape. Through portraiture\, landscape photography and video\, the exhibition Landvörður presents a meditation on the collective responsibility of Icelanders and visitors to preserve this unique nature\, and considers the paradox of attempting to preserve the same landscapes that the tourism industry seeks to exploit. \nJessica Auer is a Canadian photographer\, filmmaker and teacher who currently lives in Seyðisfjörður\, Iceland. Her work has been presented in museums\, galleries and festivals\, including The National Museum of Iceland\, The Canadian Center for Architecture and the Mulhouse Photography Biennale in France. In 2020\, Jessica’s portfolio “Looking North” was awarded the Magnús Ólafsson Grant from the Reykjavík Museum of Photography. The same work was published by Another Place Press in 2021 and featured by ARTE television network and The Guardian. Jessica holds an MFA from Concordia University in Montréal\, where she teaches photography part-time. While in Iceland\, she runs Ströndin Studio in East Iceland. \nThe artist would like to thank Kormákur Máni Hafsteinsson and Zuhaitz Akizu for their contributions in the field\, as well as Matthew Brooks and Luigi Iagulli for their assistance with post-production. DESCRIPTION:Frá árinu 2016 hefur Jessica Auer fengist markvisst við myndræna skrásetningu á áhrifum fjöldaferðamennsku á íslenskt landslag og samfélag. \nJessica ferðaðist milli Kanada og vinnustofu sinnar á Íslandi og fór ekki varhluta af ferðamannauppganginum á þessum tíma og upplifði sig í þeirri stöðu að vera í senn útlendingur og heimamanneskja.  Með því að sjá báðar hliðar með augum ferðamannsins vaknaði hjá henni þörf til að deila þessari reynslu sinni í gegnum ljósmyndir og myndbönd. \nÞegar ferðalög lögðust af í Covid faraldrinum urðu töluverðar breytingar á verkum Jessicu sem hófu að endurspegla gildiskerfi þessa uppgangsiðnaðar. Í flestum nýjustu ljósmyndum hennar beinir hún athyglinni að náttúruvernd og þeim tilraunum sem gerðar eru til að vernda svæði sem eru viðkvæm fyrir ágangi í óvissuástandi heimsfaraldurs. \nÁ undanförnum árum hefur hún ferðast um landið með stórformats myndavél til að taka portrettmyndir af landvörðum og öðrum þeim sem sinna gæslu á þessum svæðum. Þessi samskipti gáfu tækifæri til að spjalla um gildi menningar og náttúru í íslensku landslagi. \nSýningin Landvörður\, með sínum portrettmyndum\, landslagsljósmyndum og myndböndum\, er hugleiðing um þá samábyrgð sem Íslendingar og gestir landsins bera við að vernda þessa einstöku náttúru\, og veltir einnig upp spurningum um þá þversögn sem felst í því að reyna að vernda sömu svæði og ferðamannaiðnaðurinn leitast við að nýta. \nJessica Auer er kanadískur ljósmyndari\, kvikmyndagerðamaður og kennari sem búsett er á Seyðisfirði. DESCRIPTION:Photography becomes easier and more accessible and opposites become clearer as the darkness retreats with increased natural light. \nThe action of photographing or forming light has many manifestations. In the exhibition Light Space– Shadow Space\, natural light is photographed inside building interiors as well as outside in the twilight. That way\, abstract forms and shadows become clearer in the specific frame of the picture plane\, still lyricism is never far away. \nEster Jóhannesdóttir graduated with MFA from the University of Leeds in 2010 and has been creating art for more than thirty years.

DESCRIPTION:Með aukinni náttúrulegri birtu verður ljósmyndun auðveldari og aðgengilegri og andstæður verða skýrari eftir því sem myrkrið verður minna.\n \nAthöfnin að ljósmynda eða mynda ljós á sér margar birtingamyndir. Í sýningunni Ljósrými – skuggarými er náttúrulegt ljós myndað í innviðum bygginga sem og úti í ljósaskiptunum. Við það myndast abstrakt form og skuggar verða greinilegri í afmörkuðum ramma myndflatarins en þrátt fyrir það er hið ljóðræna aldrei langt undan. \nEster Jóhannesdóttir útskrifaðist með MFA gráðu frá University of Leeds árið 2010 og hefur fengist við listsköpun í yfir 30 ár.

SUMMARY:Gissur Guðjónsson: Svæði / Site
DESCRIPTION:The series is an exploration of unidentified places where traces of human existence have gathered.\n\nGissur uses this material and its forms to make his own landscape. Shaping it by corrupting the viewer‘s perspective using the methodology of photomapping while arranging the photos together. The sites Gissur photographs seem to have by pure coincidence become a temporary haven for things people no longer see a use for. Curiosity and Gissur’s sincere interest in things that have lost their usability shines through in this work\, as was the motivational force behind the making of this work.\n\nGissur Guðjónsson is an Icelandic photographer based in Selfoss\, born in 1991. Gissur studied photography in Ljósmyndaskólinn and graduated from there in January 2020.

DESCRIPTION:Á sýningunni „Kerfið“ leitast Elvar Örn Kjartansson við að draga upp á yfirborðið hið ósýnilega kerfi sem liggur að baki nútíma þægindum og við tökum sem sjálfsögðum hlut. \nFrá árinu 2016 hefur Elvar Örn unnið að umfangsmiklu ljósmyndaverkefni þar sem hann hefur heimsótt fyrirtæki og stofnanir á Íslandi og myndað þar ýmis rými. Um er að ræða stórt og flókið kerfi sem samanstendur af mannvirkjum\, stofnunum og þjónustufyrirtækjum og óteljandi pörtum sem eru innviðir þess. Hvert og eitt þeirra þjónar sínum sérstaka tilgangi og sér til þess að þjóðfélagið nær að ganga sinn vanagang frá degi til dags og við lifum og hrærumst í því  nánast óafvitandi. Það er ekki fyrr en rafmagnið fer af eða þegar netsambandið virkar ekki að við finnum fyrir því en einkum þegar farið er í verkfall í heilu atvinnugreinunum.

SUMMARY:Elvar Örn Kjartansson: The System
DESCRIPTION:In his exhibition The System\, Elvar Örn Kjartansson seeks to bring to the surface the invisible system behind the modern amenities that we take for granted. \nSince 2016 Elvar Örn has been working on an extensive photographic project\, for which he visits businesses and public bodies in Iceland and takes photographs of various spaces. The system is large and complex\, comprised of buildings\, institutions and service companies\, and the innumerable parts which make up its infrastructure. Each and every one of them serves a specific purpose\, ensuring that society can continue to function from day to day; and we live our lives within it almost unconsciously. Only when the electrical supply fails\, or we lose our internet connection\, are we affected – and especially when a whole sector of the economy is impacted by industrial action.

Verkið fjallar um frelsið sem þær fundu í hafinu og styrkingu vináttunnar sem var mikilvægur þáttur í að halda geðheilsu á tímum mikilla takmarka.

SUMMARY:Giita Hammond: View from the Sea
DESCRIPTION:‘View from the Sea’ is a photography and video work by Giita Hammond. She took the photos while swimming in the sea with her friends in Dublin\, Ireland\, during the first year and a half of the Covid epidemic. The work is about how they found freedom in the sea\, and their friendship grew stronger\, which was an important factor in maintaining sanity in times of heavy restrictions.\nGiita Hammond is of Icelandic and Irish descent. She has been involved in photography and art since a young age. At age 20\, she moved to Dublin\, Ireland\, first to study multimedia and later photography at the Institute of Art\, Design & Technology (IADT)\, where she completed her B.A. degree.
