DESCRIPTION:Þegar falleg rós deyr þá deyr ekki fegurðin vegna þess að fegurðina er ekki að finna í rósinni. Fegurð er hugarástand. Hún er andlegt og tilfinningalegt viðbragð okkar. Við bregðumst við lífinu sem það væri fullkomið. \nAgnes Martin\, Beauty is the Mystery of Life. \nÁ sýningunni Gerviblóm gefur að líta tálmyndir. Myndlistin og þá sér í lag málverkið hefur í gegnum listasöguna oft verið kallað gluggi að raunveruleikanum en hver er þessi raunveruleiki og er myndlistin sjálf við nánari skoðun nokkuð nema eftirmynd eða gervi. \nTilbúin fegurð gerviblóma getur heillað á marga ólíka vegu. Myndlistarmaðurinn Birgir Snæbjörn Birgisson erfði safn gerviblóma sem verið hafði í eigu móður hans. Hún var mikill blómaunnandi. Safninu og sögu þess fannst Birgi hann verða að gera einhver skil. Margt kom til greina enda hægt að vinna með blómin á marga vegu. Gerviblóm eru eftirmyndir lifandi blóma og því reyndist áhugavert að taka af þeim þrykk í formi grafíkverka á pappír\, skrásetja þau sem einskonar eftirmyndir af eftirmyndum. Lifandi blóm\, þrátt fyrir fegurð\, vísa óhjákvæmilega til hverfulleika og þeirrar staðreyndar að tilveran er tímabundin. Því má líta á gerviblóm sem ákveðna leið til að afneita hverfulleikanum\, í það minnsta slá honum á frest. Á sýningunni gefur jafnframt að líta eitt málverk eftir Birgi sem tengist Eyjafirðinum og er byggt á gamalli fréttaljósmynd af hjónum sem ráku fósturheimili á Hjalteyri. Heimili sem mikil umfjöllun hefur verið um vegna meintrar gagnrýni á starfshætti hjónanna. Ímynd heimilisins og yfirlýstur kærleikur reyndist tilbúningur einn\, eða gervi. \nBirgir Snæbjörn Birgisson fæddist á Akureyri árið 1966 og stundaði nám við Myndlista- og handíðaskóla Íslands og École des Arts Décoratifs\, í Strasbourg í Frakklandi. Verk Birgis beinast að pólitískum\, samfélagslegum og sögulegum málefnum í okkar samtíma. Á listilegan hátt sameinast næmni og mildi háalvarlegu inntaki. Hið fínlega og hið smáa\, því sem næst hvíslandi framsetning Birgis\, magnar upp háskerpu skilningarvitanna. Sú einlæga frásögn sem Birgir töfrar fram\, knýr áhorfandann til að takast á við gagnrýna hugsun með því að afhjúpa sakleysislegt yfirbragð og alla þá mýkt sem af verkum Birgis stafar.

SUMMARY:Birgir Snæbjörn Birgisson: Fake Flowers
DESCRIPTION:Pálshús Museum\, Ólafsfjörður \nWhen a beautiful rose dies beauty does not die because it is not really in the rose. Beauty is an awareness in the mind. It is a mental and emotional response that we make. We respond to life as though it were perfect. \nAgnes Martin\, Beauty is the Mystery of Life. \n  \nIn the show Fake Flowers\, we are offered false impressions. Art and especially paintings have through history been said represent a window to reality\, but what is that reality and is art\, all considered\, anything more but an illusion or fake. \nThe artificial beauty of fake flowers can fascinate in many ways. The artist Birgir Snæbjörn Birgisson inherited a collection of fake flowers from his mother. She had been a flower enthusiast. Birgir felt he had to do the collection and its story justice. Several ways were possible. Fake flowers are replicas of live ones and therefore it was interesting to make prints on paper from the flowers\, archive them as some sort of replicas of replicas. Live flowers\, regardless of their beauty\, refer to impermanence and the fact that existence is only temporary. We can therefore picture fake flowers\, as a means to deny the impermanence\, at least postpone it. In the show there is also one painting by Birgir\, related to Eyjafjörður. It is based on an old press photo of a couple that used to run a foster home in Hjalteyri. A home that has been in the news recently because its operation has been highly criticized. The image of the home and its declared kindness turned out to be a fabrication or fake. \nBirgir Snæbjörn Birgisson was born in Akureyri in 1966 and studied at The Icelandic College of Art and Crafts in Iceland and École des Arts Décoratifs\, Strasbourg\, France. Birgir addresses political\, social and historical issues in the present day. He expertly combines sensitivity and tenderness with the sober content of his work. The earnest\, murmured narrative conjured up by Birgir compels the onlooker to address critical thinking\, by unveiling the innocent character and all the gentleness that emanates from his work.
