DESCRIPTION:Saturday June 12th an exhibition of Guðmunda Andrésdóttir’s works\, Cadence\, will open in Hafnarborg’s main gallery. The museum will be open from 12–5 p.m. and the director will address guests at 3 p.m. \n\n\n\nIn 1945\, Guðmunda Andrésdóttir\, then twenty-three years old\, went to see Svavar Guðnason’s exhibition at Listamannaskálinn\, where she set eyes on and was touched deeply by the artist’s abstract paintings\, later putting her experience into these words: \n\n\n\n“I was utterly befuddled when I saw that exhibition!… And then I got it into my head to start painting. It felt like a knockout. Yes\, it was indeed a fine exhibition and I went to see it again and again.”[1] \n\n\n\nMost people will probably be familiar with this kind of feeling\, as if art pierces the heart itself. Whether one happens to be standing in front of a painting at an exhibition\, listening to music\, watching a film or reading a new book\, it almost feels like opening one’s eyes at last\, having kept them closed for a long time\, finally looking upon the world and seeing everything in new light. Guðmunda herself was impacted in such a way at Svavar’s exhibition\, as portrayed by her words\, and she consequently dedicated her life to the creation of art. \n\n\n\nGuðmunda belonged to the group of artists that worked in the style of geometric abstraction in Iceland\, also participating in exhibitions with the Septem-Group\, first in 1952\, at the end of their former exhibition series\, and then again in 1974-88. Guðmunda was notably the only woman who participated in the group’s exhibitions\, but at the time\, in the postwar period\, artists\, both men and women\, went down the line of abstraction\, seeking an international language that might express universal truth\, common and comprehensible to people of all backgrounds\, in a similar way to music. \n\n\n\nThis is the first solo exhibition of Guðmunda Andrésdóttir’s work in Hafnarborg\, but the artworks on display here belong to the collection of the National Gallery of Iceland\, the Reykjavík Art Museum\, the University of Iceland\, as well as works belonging to the ASÍ Art Museum and private collectors. Exhibiting a selection of different works\, oil paintings\, watercolours\, pencil sketches and more\, one can then glean how the artist plays with each medium\, in her search for higher truth – through form\, colour\, or the combination of both. \n\n\n\nIn the artist’s work\, one can thus encounter a few intriguing contradictions\, between the poetic and the systematic\, the sensitive and the calculated\, calling into question the importance of sensing as opposed to understanding. There are\, however\, some things that demand no explanation\, much like the melody that captures the audience by the sheer power of music\, and Guðmunda’s work certainly strikes a similar chord\, balancing the rational and the emotional\, the feminine and the masculine. All in all\, Guðmunda Andrésdóttir was a person of unique character and talent and her contribution to Icelandic art history and the local artist community remains significant to this day. Without doubt\, she marched to the beat of her own drum\, in both life and work\, choosing to create her very own cadence. \n\n\n\nThe curators of the exhibition are Unnur Mjöll S. Leifsdóttir and Hólmar Hólm. \n\n\n\nGuðmunda Andrésdóttir was born in Reykjavík on the 3rd of November 1922 and died on the 31st of August 2002. She graduated from Verzlunarskóli Íslands in 1941 and was an extramural student at Konstfack in Stockholm in 1947-48\, as well as studying painting at Otte Sköld’s private school. She later moved to Paris to study art\, at L’Académie de la Grande Chaumière and L’Académie Ranson\, in 1951-53. Guðmunda was a leading artist in the field of abstract painting in Iceland\, being the only woman among the members of the Septem-Group\, for example. She had several private exhibitions during her career\, notably in Kjarvalsstaðir in 1990\, and participated in various group exhibitions both in Iceland and abroad. DESCRIPTION:Haustsýning Hafnarborgar í ár er Samfélag skynjandi vera\, í sýningarstjórn Wiolu Ujazdowska og Huberts Gromny. Með því að bjóða fjölbreyttum hópi – listamönnum\, fræðimönnum og fleirum – að taka þátt í sýningunni vilja sýningarstjórarnir skapa vettvang þar sem margar raddir mætast og ólíkir möguleikar tjáningar og skynjunar eru skoðaðir. Þannig mun sýningin bjóða upp á margvíslega nálgun\, með áherslu á tíma\, ferli og flutning\, þar sem rýmið verður virkjað\, kannað og nýtt á marga vegu\, svo safnið breytist í stað til að mynda tengsl. \nMeð því að líta á tengingu okkar við heiminn sem samfélag skynjandi vera getum við nálgast efnið á nýjan hátt\, hvort sem við eigum við samband manns og náttúru\, manns og menningar eða samband mannsins við sjálfan sig. Hugtakið skynjandi vera leysir okkur því undan viðjum gildishlaðinna orða\, svo við getum ímyndað okkur hvað það er að vera manneskja í stærra samhengi. Meginhugmyndin er að spyrja spurninga um sagn- og félagsfræðilega merkingu hins mannlega\, svo sem hún varðar það hvað og hver við teljum tilheyra samfélaginu. Hafnarborg og saga hússins eru einnig áhugaverður staður fyrir slíka rannsókn\, enda má segja að sú breyting sem gerð var á nýtingu hússins\, er því var breytt úr apóteki í safn\, hafi falið í sér táknræna umbreytingu\, þar sem horfið var frá læknisfræðilegum aðferðum\, þ.e. lyfjafræðinni\, og þess í stað leitað til hinna andlegu og menningarlegu áhrifa listarinnar. \nÞá vakna spurningar um togstreituna á milli lista og vísinda\, þar sem hægt er að líta á listina sem hugrænt verkfæri sem hjálpar okkur að greina það sem ekki er hægt að skýra með vísindunum einum saman – tengslin á milli hins þekkta og hins óþekkta. Með því að þenja skynfærin gefur sýningin gestum tækifæri á að upplifa stað og stund og leiða hugann að mikilvægi minninga og mismunandi samskiptaleiða\, tækniþróunar og fjarskipta\, er hafa valdið miklum breytingum á íslensku samfélagi\, sem er að verða æ fjölbreyttara. Þessi fjölbreytileiki hefur jafnframt í för með sér tengingu við aðra staði\, nýjar hefðir og siði. Hver komumaður hefur ákveðna þekkingu\, eigið safn minninga\, í farteskinu\, sem hann notar til þess að takast á við nýjar aðstæður og óþekkt land. Ef við hugsum um listina sem tæki sem gerir okkur kleift að skilja hið ósýnilega eða ógreinilega getum við jafnvel nýtt hana til þess að takast á við ólíkar skilgreiningar og þætti þess að vera skynjandi vera. \nHubert Gromny er myndlistarmaður\, fræðimaður\, sýningarstjóri og rithöfundur\, búsettur í Reykjavík. Hann útskrifaðist með MA-gráðu frá Listaháskólanum í Kraków\, Póllandi\, árið 2015. Þá er hann með BA-gráðu frá Jagiellonian-háskólanum í Kraków\, þar sem hann nam við heimspekideild skólans. Í starfi sínu kannar Hubert mörkin á milli listar\, fræða og dægurmenningar\, í því skyni að vinda ofan af stjórnmála- og félagsfræðilegum gildum sjónlista- og menningar. \nWiola Ujazdowska er myndlistarkona\, gjörningalistamaður og listfræðingur\, búsett í Reykjavík. Hún er með MA-gráðu í listfræði frá Kóperníkusarháskólanum í Toruń\, Póllandi\, þar sem hún lagði einnig stund á málaralist við myndlistardeild skólans. Á árunum 2012-2013 stundaði hún svo nám við CICS í Köln\, Þýskalandi. Verk Wiolu fást að mestu við líkama og kyn á hinu pólitíska sviði\, með tilliti til fólksflutninga\, stéttaskiptingar\, landamæra og trúarkenninga\, auk þess sem hún tekst á við menningar- og félagsfræðilega strúktúra í heimspekilegu\, mann- og menningarfræðilegu samhengi. \nListamennirnir sem taka þátt í sýningunni eru Agnieszka Sosnowska\, Andrea Ágústa Aðalsteinsdóttir\, Angela Rawlings\, Anna Wojtyńska\, Dance Africa Iceland\, Freyja Eilíf\, Gígja Jónsdóttir\, Hildur Ása Henrýsdóttir\, Hubert Gromny\, Kathy Clark\, Katrín Inga Jónsdóttir Hjördísardóttir\, Melanie Ubaldo\, Michelle Sáenz Burrola\, Nermine El Ansari\, Pétur Magnússon\, Rúnar Örn Jóhönnu Marinósson\, Styrmir Örn Guðmundsson\, Ufuoma Overo-Tarimo og Wiola Ujazdowska. \nÞessi sýning verður sú ellefta í haustsýningarröð Hafnarborgar en verkefnið hefur það að markmiði að gefa sýningarstjórum sem ekki eiga langan feril að baki kost á að senda inn tillögu að sýningu í safninu. \nÞað er Listráð Hafnarborgar ásamt forstöðumanni sem fer yfir umsóknir og velur vinningstillöguna ár hvert.

SUMMARY:Community of Sentient Beings
DESCRIPTION:This year’s autumn exhibition at Hafnarborg is Community of Sentient Beings\, curated by Wiola Ujazdowska and Hubert Gromny. By inviting various professionals – artists\, academics\, performers – to participate in the exhibition\, the aim of the curators is to create a space for multiple voices to come together\, while reflecting on different ways of voicing\, hearing and sensing. In this way\, the exhibition will offer a space for various kinds of engagement\, with an emphasis on the project’s processual and performative nature\, by activating the space and exploring different ways of inhabiting it\, transforming the museum into the space of connectivity. \nLooking at our connection to the world as a community of sentient beings will allow us to open various paths of investigation\, whether it be the relationship between human and nature\, human and culture\, or human and human. The term sentient being allows us to abandon historically charged definitions\, to think of personhood and humans more broadly. At the core of the concept\, is an interrogation of the historical and social usage of a category of human\, which concerns whom and what we consider part of a community. Hafnarborg and its history also provide an interesting context for such investigation\, as changing the function from a pharmacy and chemist laboratory can be seen as a symbolic shift from healing practices based on science\, namely chemistry\, towards the spiritual and cultural agency of art. \nThis calls into question the tension between art and science\, as approaching art as a cognitive capacity may allow us to comprehend that which cannot be captured by scientific reason – connections between worlds known and unknown. Extending our perception\, the exhibition invites guests to sense a place or presence\, pondering the importance of memories and different modes of communication\, such as those mediated by technology\, and bringing to mind the changes in Icelandic society\, which is becoming more and more diverse. This diversity brings connection with other places\, other traditions and different spiritual practices. Each newcomer arrives with embodied knowledge\, a memory\, which is a basis to encounter new\, unknown land. Thinking of art as a vehicle to understand the invisible\, to listen to undercurrents and reflect on them may then allow us to engage with various dimensions of what we perceive as a sentient being. \nHubert Gromny is an artist\, researcher\, curator and writer\, based in Reykjavík\, Iceland. He graduated with an MA from the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków\, Poland\, in 2015. He also holds a BA from the Jagiellonian University in Kraków\, where he studied at the department of philosophy. In his practice\, Gromny investigates the intersections between art\, theory and popular culture\, in order to unfold the sociopolitical significance of aesthetics and culture. \nWiola Ujazdowska is an artist\, performer and art researcher based in Reykjavík\, Iceland. She holds an MA in art theory from Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń\, Poland\, where she also studied painting at the department of fine arts. DESCRIPTION:A retrospective exhibition of works by Þorvaldur Þorsteinsson (Thorvaldur Thorsteinsson)\, in collaboration with the Akureyri Art Museum and the Thorvaldur Thorsteinsson Estate. DESCRIPTION:Taking a photograph can seem so simple – just the push of a button – almost an objet trouvé\, a recording of photons meeting molecules. It is mysterious and emotional\, with aesthetics and instincts coming to play\, but also decidedly rooted in the scientific. The artist thinks about how people see\, in connection with the medium of photography – how three dimensional spaces\, things and fleeting moments are interpreted through this two dimensional\, static medium. DESCRIPTION:The exhibition places emphasis on Icelandic landscapes\, with the aim of reflecting on and re-evaluating the relationship that humans have with the earth. The Anthropocene is a proposed term for the current geological epoch\, defined by human impact on the planet\, which has become so significant that it can be construed as a geological force. The fallout includes global warming\, ocean acidification\, the sixth mass extinction event and so on. Urgent action must be taken to combat this vast issue on all fronts\, employing all means and methods\, ranging from the sciences to the arts\, the personal and the communal. SUMMARY:Design March -  Kristín Sigurðardóttir & Flétta: Reshaping Mineral Wool
DESCRIPTION:Reshaping Mineral Wool is a collaboration between Flétta and Kristín Sigurðardóttur\, where they look at ways to transform mineral wool into a new material. In their work\, they make use of excess material that is generally not utilised\, but instead gets sent to landfill. Moreover\, mineral wool is one of the few building materials that are produced in Iceland\, using locally sourced minerals. The exhibition takes an experimental approach\, employing various media to shed light on the value of this material\, which is otherwise disposed of as waste. Videos\, photographs\, samples\, objects\, sound and text invite the guest to explore the different possibilities for reshaping mineral wool. \nKristín Sigurðardóttir (b. 1989) is a product designer living in Göteborg\, Sweden. Kristín is part of Willow Project\, which has been exhibited at Dutch Design Week and Earth Matters at TextielMuseum in Tilburg\, the Netherlands. Writings about the project can be found in the books Radical Matter: Rethinking Materials for a Sustainable Future og Why Materials Matter: Responsible Design for a Better World. Kristín and Flétta’s research\, Reshaping Mineral Wool\, is a continuation of Kristín’s graduation project on the transformation of mineral wool into black\, vitreous material. \nDesigners Birta Rós Brynjólfsdóttir (b. 1992) and Hrefna Sigurðardóttir (b. 1989) founded Flétta in 2018\, but they have been collaborating on projects related to upcycling since 2014. DESCRIPTION:Efnisheimur steinullar er samstarfsverkefni Fléttu og Kristínar Sigurðardóttur þar sem leikið er með ólíkar leiðir til að umbreyta steinull í nýtt efni. Steinull sem fellur til við byggingarframkvæmdir er ekki endurnýtt í dag heldur send til urðunar. Hún er eitt af fáum byggingarefnum sem framleidd eru á Íslandi og er meginuppistaða hennar íslensk jarðefni. Sýningin er tilraunakennd og notast er við ólíka miðla til að varpa ljósi á virði hráefnis sem annars færi til urðunar. Myndskeið\, ljósmyndir\, efnisprufur\, hlutir\, hljóð og texti flæða saman í ferðalagi um áður ókannaðan efnisheim íslenskrar steinullar. \nKristín Sigurðardóttir (f. 1989) er vöruhönnuður sem býr í Gautaborg. DESCRIPTION:If time is like a mountain that mankind climbs and climbs without ever reaching the top\, art is that which we leave behind to mark the way along which we have already walked. \nWhat will the wayposts of the year 2022 look like? \nIn these times which are defined by change\, non-stop progress\, information flow and self-branding\, destruction and innovation\, new opportunities and monopolies\, revolutions and distrust. By resolutions and new beginnings. How can one possibly hold anything back when creating such a waypost? \nAny type of creative medium never dies\, for such a “death” would imply that art is dependent on public opinion\, which would then imply that art should serve our preconceived notions\, rather than pull us out of our comfort zone and make us see the world in a new light. \nIf the painting must be revived\, we make paintings by drawing. If symbolism needs new symbols\, then look around and see that symbols are to be found everywhere. If there are seemingly no more stories to tell\, by all means we must not hold back. \nSigurður Ámundason graduated from the Department of Fine Art of the Iceland University of the Arts in 2012. Sigurður has had thirteen solo exhibitions so far\, for example at Kling & Bang\, Kunstschlager\, Húsið in Patreksfjörður\, Open\, Ekkisens and Outvert Art Space. He has also participated in many group exhibitions\, notably at the Reykjavík Art Museum\, Hverfisgallerí\, Gletta in Borgarfjörður eystri\, Harbinger\, Salts in Basel\, Switzerland\, and CHART Emerging in Copenhagen. He has worked as a teacher both at the Reykjavík School of Visual Art and the Iceland University of the Arts. In 2020\, he received a nomination for the Motivational Award of the Icelandic Art Prize. Sigurður lives and works in Reykjavík.

DESCRIPTION:Ef tíminn er eins og endalaust fjall sem mannkynið stanslaust klífur\, þá er listin vörðurnar sem við skiljum eftir okkur til þess að marka hvar við vorum eitt sinn. \nHvernig munu vörður ársins 2022 vera? \nÖld sem einkennist af breytingum\, sífelldri þróun\, upplýsingaflæði og sjálfsímyndarmótun\, tortímingu og nýsköpun\, tækifærum og einokun\, byltingum og tortryggni. Endalokum og nýjum upphöfum. Hvernig er mögulega hægt að halda aftur af sér við sköpun slíkrar vörðu? \nEngir miðlar deyja\, því slíkur „dauði“ gefa í skyn að listin sé háð áliti almennings\, sem aftur gefur í skyn að listin sé hér til þess þjóna fyrirframgefnum hugmyndum okkar í stað þess að raska þægindaramma okkar og kynna okkur fyrir heiminum á ný. \nEf málverkið þarfnast endurvakningar\, þá teiknum við málverk. SUMMARY:Gunnar Örn Gunnarsson: In the Depths of Your Own Awareness
DESCRIPTION:Gunnar Örn Gunnarsson held his first solo exhibition in Unuhús in 1970 and he came to make waves in the Icelandic art scene at the start of the 1970s\, as his powerful work quickly drew attention to this young and self-taught artist. \nStraight away with his first exhibition\, Gunnar Örn raised existential questions about the pressing tempo and detachment of modern society. \nHuman existence was a constant source of inspiration for the artist\, providing him with subject material for his whole career\, in the struggle of man against himself – of existing in the world. His whole body of work is characterised by his spiritual search\, on a journey where the canvas echoes the artist’s personal experiences. \nGunnar Örn was an extremely prolific artist and left a great many artworks: drawings\, monotypes\, paintings\, sculptures and watercolours\, as well as works created with mixed technique. \nThis retrospective exhibition will feature works spanning the artist’s career\, of almost forty years\, during which he went through a number of transformations and changed his style a few times. \nGunnar Örn Gunnarsson (1946-2008) took cello lessons in Copenhagen in 1963-64\, as well as attending Svend Nielsen’s drawing school in Denmark\, though he was otherwise a self-taught artist. Gunnar Örn was an active presence in the Icelandic art scene\, exhibiting regularly both here and abroad\, for example in Denmark\, Tokyo\, Budapest and in Achim Moeller’s gallery\, Moeller Fine Art\, New York. Notably\, Gunnar Örn was Iceland’s representative at the Venice Bienniale in 1988.

DESCRIPTION:Gunnar Örn Gunnarsson hélt sína fyrstu einkasýningu í Unuhúsi árið 1970 og kom með áberandi hætti inn í myndlistarsenuna á Íslandi í byrjun áttunda áratugarins\, þar sem kraftmikil verk hans vöktu fljótt athygli á ungum sjálfmenntuðum listamanni. \nStrax á fystu sýningu sinni leggur Gunnar Örn upp með tilvistarlegar spurningar um knýjandi hraða og firringu nútímasamfélagsins. Tilvist mannsins var honum stöðug uppspretta og viðfangsefni allan hans feril\, glíma mannsins við sjálfan sig – það að vera til í heiminum. Allt höfundarverk Gunnars Arnar einkennist af andlegri leit hans á þessu ferðalagi\, þar sem striginn bergmálar persónulega upplifun listamannsins. \nGunnar Örn var gríðarlega afkastamikill listamaður og eftir hann liggur mikill fjöldi verka: teikningar\, einþrykk\, málverk og skúlptúrar\, vatnslitaverk auk verka sem unnin eru með blandaðri tækni. Á sýningunni verða sýnd verk frá öllum ferli Gunnars Arnar\, sem spannar tæplega fjörtíu ár\, en á þeim tíma gekk hann í gegnum nokkrar umbreytingar og stokkaði reglulega upp viðfangsefni sín. \nGunnar Örn Gunnarsson (1946-2008) lærði á selló í Kaupmannahöfn veturinn 1963-64 og sótti einnig teikninámskeið hjá Svend Nielsen í Danmörku en var að öðru leiti sjálfmenntaður í myndlist. Gunnar Örn var virkur í sýningarhaldi hér á landi\, auk þess sem verk hans voru meðal annars sýnd í Danmörku\, Tókýó\, Búdapest og í galleríi Achims Moeller í New York. Gunnar Örn var fulltrúi Íslands á Feneyjatvíæringnum árið 1988. \nSýningarstjóri er Aldís Arnardóttir.

SUMMARY:Solander 250: Letters from Iceland
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, August 27th at 2 p.m. two exhibitions will open in Hafnarborg’s Sverris-gallery. Solander 250: Letters from Iceland and Paradise Lost – Daniel Solander’s Legacy. \nThe exhibition Solander 250: A Letter From Iceland is held in remembrance of one of the first foreign scientific expeditions to Iceland\, in 1772\, i.e. 250 years ago. On this journey was one of Carl von Linné‘s apostles\, the Swedish natural scientist Daniel Solander. Among the things Solander and his fellow travellers recorded in Iceland were nature\, culture\, traditions\, and clothing. Ten Icelandic graphic-artists will interpret these events from 1772 and how the nation and the country have changed since then. \nSimultaneously the exhibition Paradise Lost – Daniel Solander’s Legacy. will be opened. Solander was the main botanist on the HMS Endeavor on the first European expedition to Australia. The exhibition has already been set up in New Zealand\, Australia\, and Sweden. The two exhibitions thus form a unique dialogue between the Arctic and the Pacific through Daniel Solander’s travels. DESCRIPTION:Laugardaginn 27. ágúst kl. 14 verða tvær sýningar opnaðar í Sverrissal Hafnarborgar. Sýningin Solander 250: Bréf frá Íslandi og Paradise Lost – Daniel Solander’s Legacy. \nSýningin Solander 250: Bréf frá Íslandi er sett upp til að minnast þess að árið 2022 eru 250 ár liðin frá fyrsta erlenda vísindaleiðangrinum til Íslands 1772. Með í þeirri för var einn af lærisveinum hins heimsþekkta sænska náttúruvísindamanns Carls von Linné\, sænski náttúrufræðingurinn Daniel Solander. Solander skrásetti m.a. ýmislegt um náttúru Íslands\, menningu\, siði og klæðaburð. Tíu íslenskir grafíklistamenn frá Íslenskri grafík túlka á sýningunni þessa atburði og þær breytingar sem hafa átt sér stað á landi og þjóð. \nSamhliða verður sýningin Paradise Lost – Daniel Solander’s Legacy opnuð. Þar sýna 10 listamenn frá Kyrrahafssvæðinu en Solander var í áhöfn HMS Endeavour í fyrstu ferð Evrópumanna til Ástralíu. Sýningin hefur áður verið sett upp á Nýja-Sjálandi\, í Ástralíu og Svíþjóð. Sýningarnar tvær mynda því einstakt samtal Norðurskautsins og Kyrrahafsins í gegnum ferðir Daniels Solanders. SUMMARY:high tide – low tide
DESCRIPTION:This year’s autumn exhibition at Hafnarborg is high tide – low tide\, curated by Sigrún Alba Sigurðardóttir. The focus of the exhibition will be on the seaboard\, both grand in scale and home to little lifeforms\, delicate flora and diverse rock formations. There\, the large and fierce clashes with the small and fragile\, as the waves crash relentlessly on the shore. \nAt the exhibition\, the seaboard will be viewed through the work of artists from different countries\, whose culture and economy are greatly shaped by the seaboard and the ocean. Throughout history\, those that live near the coast have in large part based their livelihood on the proximity to the ocean\, where the shoreline marks a clear border\, in addition to being a bridge to other worlds. The seaboard can thus play a part in elucidating the complex positions and responsibilities mankind has towards nature in the Anthropocene. \nIn relation to climate change\, one might view the seaboard as an area of conflict or battleground. Rising sea levels have an immediate effect on the seaboard – life at the coast will change as global temperatures continue to rise and this may even force humans to resettle in new places en masse. The exhibition will then call attention to the tenuous yet precious relationship we have with nature\, in the hope of moving viewers and causing visitors to rethink their own position towards the seaboard in a whole new light. \nThe participating artists are Alda Mohr Eyðunardóttir\, Anna Rún Tryggvadóttir\, Pétur Thomsen\, Stuart Richardson\, Studio ThinkingHand (Rhoda Thing and Mikkel Dahlin Bojesen) and Tadashi Ono. \nSigrún Alba Sigurðardóttir is an independent curator\, having previously curated exhibitions at the National Gallery of Iceland\, the LÁ Art Museum\, the Reykjavík Museum of Photography and the National Museum of Iceland. She is currently working on an exhibition based on collaboration between Fotografisk Center\, Denmark\, Landskrona Foto\, Sweden\, Northern Photographic Center\, Finland\, and the Akureyri Art Museum\, Iceland. This exhibition is set to open in Copenhagen in January 2022. \nSigrún Alba is a teacher of art history at the University of Iceland\, as well as teaching at the design department of the Iceland University of the Arts. She has published seven books and a number of academic papers\, on Icelandic art and photography in particular.

DESCRIPTION:Haustsýning Hafnarborgar í ár er flæðir að – flæðir frá í sýningarstjórn Sigrúnar Ölbu Sigurðardóttur. Á sýningunni verður sjónum beint að strandlengjunni\, sem er jafnt stórbrotin og uppfull af smáum lífverum\, viðkvæmum gróðri og fjölbreyttum steinategundum. Takast þar á hið stóra og ofsafengna\, hið smáa og viðkvæma\, er öldurnar skella með krafti á ströndinni. \nÁ sýningunni verður strandlengjan skoðuð í gegnum verk listamanna frá ólíkum löndum þar sem sjórinn og strandlengjan mótar bæði menningu og atvinnulíf. Íbúar við sjávarsíðuna hafa í gegnum aldirnar byggt lífsviðurværi sitt að stórum hluta á nálægðinni við hafið en ströndin skilgreinir bæði mörk heimsins fyrir íbúana og er tenging þeirra við aðra heima. \nHlutverk strandlengjunnar í þessu sambandi kann því að varpa ljósi á margvísleg viðhorf til umhverfisins\, ábyrgð og stöðu mannsins í náttúrunni á mannöld. \nÁ tímum loftslagsbreytinga má líta á strandlengjuna sem eins konar átakasvæði. Hækkandi sjávarborð hefur bein áhrif á strandlengjuna – lífverur við ströndina eiga eftir að hverfa og aðrar nema land með hækkandi hitastigi og svo getur farið að hugsa þurfi byggð og búsetu við sjóinn út frá nýjum forsendum. Þá mun sýningin draga fram hversu samlíf okkar við náttúruna er viðkvæmt og dýrmætt\, í þeirri von að hreyfa við áhorfendum og fá gesti til að hugsa um viðhorf sitt til strandlengjunnar á nýjan hátt og í nýju samhengi. \nListamennirnir sem taka þátt í sýningunni eru Alda Mohr Eyðunardóttir\, Anna Rún Tryggvadóttir\, Pétur Thomsen\, Stuart Richardson\, Studio ThinkingHand (Rhoda Thing og Mikkel Dahlin Bojesen) og Tadashi Ono. \nSigrún Alba Sigurðardóttir er sjálfstætt starfandi sýningarstjóri en hún hefur sett upp sýningar í Listasafni Íslands\, Listasafni Árnesinga\, Ljósmyndasafni Reykjavíkur og Þjóðminjasafni Íslands. Sigrún Alba er stundakennari í listfræði við Háskóla Íslands og við hönnunardeild Listaháskóla Íslands. Hún hefur gefið út sjö bækur og fjölda fræðigreina\, m. \na. um íslenska myndlist og ljósmyndun.

DESCRIPTION:Á sýningunni má sjá ný og nýleg verk eftir Elfu Björk Jónsdóttur\, jafnt málverk\, teikningar og keramik. Myndheimur listakonunnar byggir á samspili hins formræna og hins fígúratífa\, þar sem hún notar hreina og tæra liti og tekur áhorfandann með sér í ferðalag um framandi heima. Þá sækir hún innblástur í náttúruna við gerð verka sinna og þar koma gjarnan fyrir ýmiss konar verur og mótíf sem sum hver finnast ekki í íslenskri náttúru. \nFyrirmyndir sækir Elfa Björk ýmist úr náttúrulífsbókum eða listasögunni og færir hún gjarnan myndefnið yfir í sinn einstaka myndheim. Í sumum verkanna má jafnvel segja að við fljúgum beint inn í iður myndanna\, líkt og horft sé frá sjónarhorni arnarins. Svífum við þannig inn í litahaf þar sem mynstur og ólíkar litasamsetningar umlykja okkur og gleðja augað. \nElfa Björk Jónsdóttir býr og starfar á Sólheimum í Grímsnesi og vinnur þar daglega að listsköpun sinni. Hún hefur sótt námskeið í myndlist frá unga aldri\, meðal annars í málaralist\, teikningu og glerlist. Á Sólheimum hefur hún aðallega notið leiðsagnar Ólafs Más Guðmundssonar\, myndlistarkennara og fagstjóra listasmiðju Sólheima. Verk Elfu Bjarkar hafa meðal annars verið sýnd í Ásmundarsal\, Gallerí Gróttu\, Listasafni Árnesinga og í Tékklandi.

SUMMARY:Eiríkur Smith
DESCRIPTION:Á sjötta áratug síðustu aldar voru miklir umbrotatímar í íslenskri myndlist. Geómetríska abstraktlistin var að nema land og hingað bárust sterkir straumar nýjunga. Eiríkur Smith\, myndlistarmaður\, var við nám í Kaupmannahöfn og París og var virkur þátttakandi í þeirri formbyltingu sem þá átti sér stað. Hann kom heim árið 1951 og í kjölfarið hélt hann einkasýningu í á óhlutbundnum verkum í Listamannaskálanum við Austurvöll\, auk þess að taka þátt í tímamótasýningu í Listamannaskálanum árið 1953. \nMálverk\, blek- og gvassmyndir Eiríks frá þessum árum bera með sér rökhugsun og góð tök á þeirri einföldun myndmálsins sem strangflatahugsunin krafðist\, án þess að fylgja fyrir fram gefnum reglum í blindni. Árið 1957 gerði Eiríkur svo endanlega upp hug sinn gagnvart strangflatalistinni og brenndi hluta þeirra verka sinna\, ásamt eldri verkum\, í malargryfju í Hafnarfirði. Verk eftir Eirík frá þessum tíma eru því vandfundin en þau sem til eru bera þess merki að Eiríkur hafði góð tök á myndgerð strangflatalistarinnar\, þó að hann kysi sjálfur að fara aðra leið síðar. Á sýningunni Án titils mjá sjá mörg áður ósýnd gvassverk\, auk verka úr safneign Hafnarborgar\, frá þessu knappa en frjóa tímabili á ferli listamannsins. \nEiríkur Smith var fæddur í Hafnarfirði árið 1925 og lést í heimabænum árið 2016. Eiríkur stundaði nám við Málara- og teikniskóla Finns Jónssonar og Jóhanns Briem veturinn 1939-1940 og við Handíða- og myndlistarskólann árin 1946-1948. Því næst hélt hann til Kaupmannahafnar í nám og árið 1951 hélt hann til Parísar\, þar sem hann nam myndlist við Académie de la Grande Chaumiére. Hann hélt fjölda einkasýninga\, auk þess að taka þátt í samsýningum víða um heim á löngum ferli sínum. Verk eftir Eirík er að finna í söfnum víðs vegar\, svo sem í safneign Listasafns Íslands\, Gerðarsafns og Listasafns Reykjavíkur en auk þess varðveitir Hafnarborg um 400 verk eftir listamanninn.

SUMMARY:Eiríkur Smith
DESCRIPTION:The Icelandic art scene went through a transformative period in the 1950s\, as new ideas and movements gained traction in the country. Geometric abstraction was spreading across the globe as a wave of change and Iceland was no exception. The artist Eiríkur Smith was studying in Copenhagen and Paris at the time and he was among those influenced by this artistic revolution. Soon after returning to Iceland in 1951\, he had a solo exhibition of abstract paintings at Listamannaskálinn in Reykjavík\, as well as taking part in a pivotal exhibition of abstract art by Icelandic artists\, also at Listamannaskálinn\, in 1953. \nEiríkur’s paintings\, ink and gouache works from this period demonstrate the artist’s firm grasp of the technique and logic inherent in the direct visual language of geometric abstraction\, without restricting himself to the rules and ideas of a single movement. In 1957\, Eiríkur made up his mind towards this genre of abstraction\, deciding to burn a part of these works\, along with some of his older pieces\, in a quarry in Hafnarfjörður. As a result\, works from this period are hard to come by\, but the ones that have been preserved clearly show Eiríkur’s knack for the style of geometric abstraction\, even if he later went in a different direction. The exhibition Untitled will feature previously unseen works that the artist painted in gouache\, alongside works from the Hafnarborg Collection\, from this short but creative period of the artist’s career. \nEiríkur Smith was born in Hafnarfjörður in 1925 and passed away at his home in town in 2016. Eiríkur was a student at the Painting and Drawing School of Finnur Jónsson and Jóhann Briem during the winter of 1939-1940 and at the Icelandic College of Art and Crafts from 1946-1948. Thereafter\, he went to Copenhagen to study drawing and he moved to Paris for further study of the arts at the Académie de la Grande Chaumiére\, in 1951. He had numerous solo exhibition\, as well as taking part in group exhibitions all over the world throughout his career. Eiríkur’s works can be found in many museums\, such as the National Gallery of Iceland\, Gerðarsafn and the Reykjavík Art Museum\, in addition to Hafnarborg’s vast collection of the artist’s work\, counting around 400 works.

SUMMARY:Sóley Eiríksdóttir: Amuse
DESCRIPTION:Earlier this year\, Hafnarborg received a generous donation of sculptures by artist Sóley Eiríksdóttir (1957-1994)\, bestowed upon the museum by the artist’s daughter\, Brynja Jónsdóttir. To mark the occasion\, the museum presents a retrospective of Sóley’s works\, but Sóley was born and raised in Hafnarfjörður\, the daughter of Bryndís Sigurðardóttir and artist Eiríkur Smith. \nSóley worked with clay in different forms throughout her career\, but she would also use concrete and steel for the making of large-scale works. In the early stages\, she focused mostly on traditional pottery\, having perhaps a more utilitarian purpose\, but in the late 80’s the artist reworked her distinct imagery\, which formerly served primarily to decorate pots or bowls\, and she gave the images new life in three-dimensional pieces\, drawings and graphic works. At this retrospective\, works of this nature\, now belonging to the Hafnarborg Collection\, will be shown alongside other works spanning Sóley’s career\, which was defined by amusing wit\, joy and lightness. \nThe exhibition is curated by Aldís Arnardóttir and Aðalheiður Valgeirsdóttir. \nSóley Eiríksdóttir studied metalworking at the Technical College of Hafnarfjörður for a year after finishing her studies at the Flensborg Secondary School. In 1975\, she then enrolled in the Icelandic College of Arts and Crafts\, first at the Department of Teaching before ultimately graduating from the Department of Pottery in 1981. Sóley exhibited widely in her short career\, for example at the Reykjavík Art Museum\, Hafnarborg\, Gallerí Langbrók and the ASÍ Art Museum\, as well as abroad\, in the United States\, Finland\, Luxembourg\, Canada and Germany.

DESCRIPTION:Leirinn var gegnumgangandi efni í listsköpun Sóleyjar en auk þess notaði hún gjarnan steinsteypu og stál við gerð stærri verka. Í upphafi ferils síns vann hún að mestu hefðbundna leirmuni\, sem telja má til nytjalistar\, en á síðari hluta níunda áratugarins öðlast teikningar og myndefni sem áður hafði prýtt skálar og ker listakonunnar\, sjálfstætt líf í þrívíðum verkum. Á yfirlitssýningunni má meðal annars sjá verk af slíkum toga\, sem hafa nú bæst við safneign Hafnarborgar\, auk fleiri verka sem spanna feril Sóleyjar\, sem einkennist af glettnislegum húmor\, léttleika og gleði. \nSýningarstjórar eru Aldís Arnardóttir og Aðalheiður Valgeirsdóttir \nSóley Eiríksdóttir lagði stund á nám við málmiðnaðardeild Iðnskólans í Hafnarfirði í eitt ár eftir nám við Flensborgarskólann. Árið 1975 hóf hún svo nám við Myndlista- og handíðaskóla Íslands\, fyrst við kennaradeild en hún útskrifaðist síðan frá leirlistadeild skólans árið 1981. Sóley sýndi verk sín víða á stuttum ferli\, meðal annars á Kjarvalsstöðum\, í Hafnarborg\, Gallerí Langbrók og Listasafni ASÍ\, auk þess sem hún hélt sýningar í Bandaríkjunum\, Finnlandi\, Lúxemburg\, Kanada og Þýskalandi.

DESCRIPTION:Í Ósýndarheimum verður sjónum beint að stafrænni list\, ljósmyndun\, hreyfimyndum\, raunsæi og ofurveruleika. Listamennirnir takast hver um sig á við hugmyndir um raunveruleika og sýndarleika sem birtast í verkum þeirra\, þar sem viðfangið er aftenging\, kvíði og sú gráglettni sem einkennir þá kynslóð sem nú lifir og hrærist í umhverfi nýmiðlunar. Með því að beita fyrir sig stafrænum tjáningarmöguleikum draga þau fram satíruna sem felst í streituvaldandi lífsmynstri 21. aldarinnar\, auk þess að gefa gaum að hvers kyns tilvistarkreppum\, loftslagsvánni og hruni vistkerfa\, mannlegu eðli og spillingu kapítalismans. Verk þeirra vekja jafnvel upp hugleiðingar um það hvernig veröld ofurveruleikans getur leitt til firringar og aftengdrar tilvistar. \nListamenn sýningarinnar Ósýndarheima nálgast hið „stafræna“ fyrst og fremst út frá hugsun og hegðun\, í stað þess að taka sérstaklega viðmið af miðlum eða aðferð. Vinna þeir með þrívíða miðla\, teikningu\, vídeó og ljósmyndun\, auk stafrænna ferla við gerð skúlptúra og málverka\, sem vísa til þeirra óskýru marka sem eru á milli raunveruleikans og hermiheimsins. Stuðst er við hreyfimyndir og hið stafræna til þess að rýna félagslegt ástand á líðandi stundu en listamennirnir í Ósýndarheimum vísa hér til stafrænna upplifana í því skyni að varpa ljósi á hinn óhlutbunda veruleika\, sem og þá spillingu og eyðileggingu sem viðgengst í umhverfi okkar. Þá ganga listamennirnir út frá því að aðgreining og tilvistarangist séu meðal afleiðinga stafræns sýndarveruleika og spyrja loks hvað framtíðin beri í skauti sér fyrir samfélag sem er orðið háð nettengdum kerfum og stafrænum tjáningarmátum í stað mannlegra samskipta. \nListamennirnir sem taka þátt í sýningunni eru Kristín Helga Ríkharðsdóttir\, Meriem Bennani\, María Guðjohnsen\, Bita Razavi\, Helena Margrét Jónsdóttir og Inari Sandell. \nSýningarstjóri er Daría Sól Andrews.

SUMMARY:Uncanny Virtuality
DESCRIPTION:Uncanny Virtuality focuses on digital art\, photography\, the moving image\, realism\, and hyperreality. Each artist explores themes of reality and virtuality through their perspective practices\, commenting on a disconnection\, anxiety and irony that is unique to our current generation within a new-media world. Through a digital expression\, they find satire in the stresses of the 21st century\, attending to modes of existential crisis\, climate disaster\, ecology\, human nature and capitalistic corruption. Their works lead us to ponder how the realm of hyperreality can lead to abstracted\, disconnected experience. \nAs a jumping off point\, “the digital” is referenced in Uncanny Virtuality as a way of thinking and operating\, as opposed to a strict medium or mode of creation. The artists work within 3D media\, animation\, video\, photography and digitally informed sculptural and painterly practice\, pointing to the blurring lines between reality and simulated existence. Using the moving image and the digital as a starting point to critically comment on a social state of affairs\, the artists of Uncanny Virtuality reference digitally experienced worlds as a way to critique the global state of abstraction\, destruction\, and corruption we have found ourselves in. They acknowledge the modes of dissociation and anxiety of existence that come from simulated realities and within the digital\, questioning thus what the future holds within a society that has become so dependent upon online realities and digital expressions of sociality. \nThe participating artists are Kristín Helga Ríkharðsdóttir\, Meriem Bennani\, María Guðjohnsen\, Bita Razavi\, Helena Margrét Jónsdóttir and Inari Sandell. \nCurated by Daría Sól Andrews.

SUMMARY:Hildur Ásgeirsdóttir Jónsson: On a Sea of Tranquillity
DESCRIPTION:The exhibition presents new and older works where Hildur Ásgeirsdóttir Jónsson intertwines the methods of weaving and painting\, as well as featuring embroidery\, ink drawings and watercolours. Hildur lived most of her life in Cleveland\, Ohio\, but she spends a part of each year in Iceland\, traveling around the country and taking photographs that serve as inspiration for new work when she returns to the studio. For years\, Hildur has created series based on brain scans and heavenly bodies\, as well as working from the Icelandic landscape\, but the hand-dyed silk threads combine in a vibrant surface that transports the viewers from their everyday surroundings. The curator of the exhibition is Aldís Arnardóttir. \nHildur Ásgeirsdóttir Jónsson (b. 1963) finished a BFA from Kent State University in 1991 and an MFA from the same institution in 1995. She studied art at the Cleveland Institute of Art in 1985-88 and also studied architecture at Kent State in 1983-85. Her work has been widely exhibited\, for example at TANG Museum\, Tibor de Nagy Gallery and at the Armory Show in New York\, Museum of Contemporary Art Cleveland\, William Busta Gallery in Cleveland\, as well as the Reykjavík Art Museum and the National Gallery of Iceland. In 2008\, she was awarded the distinguished Cleveland Arts Prize at Cleveland Museum of Art\, Ohio\, and in 2015\, she received recognition from The Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation.
