SUMMARY:Sophie Durand: looking for / stumbling across
DESCRIPTION: Associate Gallery is located at Köllunarklettsvegur 4.\n‘looking for / stumbling across’ is a collection of research\, a gathering of gestures\, a map of movement. Sophie Durand presents an installation of objects that hold within them a journey\, using the gallery space to create a temporary place for the ideas she has accumulated.\n“I think the exhibition is about the sea\, but I think it is also about the sea\, as a distance\, a threshold.” – Joe Keys\n\n​​​​Sophie Durand is a multi-disciplinary artist based between Perth\, Australia and Vilnius\, Lithuania whose practice engages installation\, collection\, drawing and text. Projects are catalysed by experiences\, observations and artefacts. Encounters set narratives in motion and generate into larger investigations\, collections and networks through a diverse range of methods. Currently Sophie is attempting to find forms of art that situate empathetically to coastal ecological systems\, reconciling with a practice that’s built from mulling over memory and looking to find ways of recalibrating production and presentation to happen simultaneously to each other and the present.\nSophie has a BA (Hons 1st Class) in Fine Art from Curtin University and has completed the Masters in Contemporary Art Program at the Estonian Academy of Arts (with distinction). She is currently a Doctor of Art candidate at the Vilnius Academy of Arts in Lithuania.

Sophie Durand setur fram innsetningu muna sem bera með sér ferðalag og notar gallerírýmið til að búa hugmyndum sem hún hefur sankað að sér tímabundinn stað.\n„Ég held að sýningin snúist um hafið en ég held að hún sé líka um hafið sem fjarlægð\, þröskuld.“ – Joe Keys\n\nSophie Durand er þverfaglegur listamaður með aðsetur á milli Perth\, Ástralíu og Vilníus\, Litháen\, sem leggur áherslu á innsetningu\, söfnun\, teikningu og texta. Verkefni hennar eru knúin áfram af upplifunum\, athugunum og munum. Stefnumót hrinda frásögnum af stað og mynda stærri rannsóknir\, söfn og tengslanet með fjölbreyttum aðferðum. Nýverið hefur Sophie reynt að finna listform sem samræmast vistfræðilegum kerfum við ströndina\, sætta sig við iðkun sem byggist á því að velta fyrir mér minni og leita að leiðum til að endurkvarða framleiðslu og framsetningu til að gerast samtímis hvort öðru og nútíðinni.\nSophie er með BA (Hons 1st Class) í myndlist frá Curtin University og hefur lokið meistaranámi í samtímalist við Eistnesku listaháskólann (með láði). Hún er nú doktorsnemi í myndlist við Listaháskólann í Vilnius í Litháen.

SUMMARY:Hugo Llanes: And When The Sun Rises\, I Look at The Sun
DESCRIPTION:With ‘When The Sun Rises\, I Look at The Sun’\, Hugo Llanes proposes to reframe domestication\, exploitation\, and the introduction of certain crops as an example of socio-political events\, namely the arrival of the Spanish to the Americas\, and the evolution of the agricultural industries built in the Latin American context.\nFocusing on land and cultural motifs\, with the sugar industry of the Veracruz region of Mexico—the artist’s place of origin—as reference\, Llanes depicts the relationship between the semi-rural labourer\, industrialisation of the land and the traditions that might emerge from it. Here\, Llanes makes the twin gestures of painting with ashes from a sugarcane field\, and burning the canvas in order to build a composed installation consisting of fired wheat\, cotton\, cane and stainless steel.\nThese gestures seek to catalyse a conversation about the complexities of living in a contemporary world sustained by extractivist practices\, immoderate consumption and crops that are the foundation of capitalist trade policies.\n\n Hugo Llanes is an artist based in Iceland. He has a BA from Universidad Veracruzana and holds a MA in Fine Arts from the Iceland University of the Arts. His work involves the study of social-political cracks and aesthetics that erupt from them. Llanes looks at social circumstances\, such as food migration\, the abuse of power\, economic disparity and the food supply chain. To depict these\, he employs artistic research and mediums such as maintenance art\, performance\, installation\, site-specific\, participatory art\, video art\, and extended painting. He believes that the personal is a microsystem that is exposed to a global sphere. \nOpening times will be 14-17hrs.\nAs well as by appointment.

DESCRIPTION:Með „And When The Sun Rises\, I Look at The Sun“ (og þegar sólin rís lít ég til sólar) leggur Hugo Llanes til að endurskipuleggja búskap\, arðrán og innflutning ákveðins landbúnaðar sem dæmi um félags-pólitíska atburði\, svo sem komu Spánverja til Ameríku\, og þróun landbúnaðariðnaðarins í Rómönsku-Amerísku samhengi.\nMeð áherslu á jörð og menningarleg mótíf\, og sykuriðnað Veracruz-héraðsins í Mexíkó – upprunastað listamannsins – til viðmiðunar\, dregur Llanes upp mynd af samspili hálf-sveitaverkamanns\, iðnvæðingu landsins og hefðanna sem af þeim kunna að spretta. Hér mótar Llanes í tvíþættri athöfn\, þar sem hann málar með ösku sykurreyrsviðar á striga sem hann svo svíður\, samsetta innsetningu af brenndu hveiti\, bómull\, reyr og ryðfríu stáli.\nListamaðurinn leitast þannig við að hvetja til samtals um flækjustig þess að hrærast í samtímaveröld sem viðhaldið er af útdráttarhyggju\, óhóflegri neyslu og jarðargróða sem er undirstaða kapítalískrar viðskiptastefnu.\n\n Hugo Llanes er listamaður með aðsetur á Íslandi. Hann er með BA frá Universidad Veracruzana og MA í myndlist frá Listaháskóla Íslands. Verk hans fela í sér rannsókn á félagspólitískum sprungum og fagurfræði sem brýst út úr þeim. Llanes skoðar félagslegar aðstæður\, svo sem matvælaflutninga\, misbeitingu valds\, efnahagslega misskiptingu og fæðuframboðskeðjuna. Til að lýsa þessu notast hann við listrænar rannsóknir og miðla svo sem viðhaldslist\, gjörninga\, innsetningar\, staðbundna list\, þátttökulist\, myndbandalist og víðtæka málaralist. Hann telur að hið persónulega sé örkerfi sem verður fyrir hnattrænu sviði.\n\n\nOpið 14-17.\nOg eftir samkomulagi.

SUMMARY:FERRELYTE: IN NUCLEUS
DESCRIPTION:FERRELYTE is an artist duo consisting of Kamile Pikelyte and Victoria Björk Ferrell. Founded in late 2022\, the collaborative project began as an exploration of the intersection between their practices\, with a focus on cataclysmic and ecological themes. ‘IN NUCLEUS’ is the first exhibition of FERRELYTE’s co-created works.\n\n\nOPENING HOURS\nSaturday 20.5: opening + performance @ 2 pm\nSunday 21.5: open 2-5 pm\nThursday 26.5: Good Thursday\, open 5-9 pm\nSaturday 27.5: open 2-5 pm\nand by appointment\n\n\nKamile Pikelyte\, a Lithuanian-born artist\, graduated from the Fine Arts Department at the Iceland University of the Arts in the spring of 2022. Her artistic practice is interdisciplinary and takes shape in a variety of media\, including video\, 3D renderings\, sculpture\, performance\, and internet archive practices. Through her art\, Kamile questions the systematic labeling of certain things as “dirty” to mask uncomfortable truths\, such as resource exploitation\, poverty\, and pollution. Her creations seek to bring to the spotlight often hidden realities that lie beneath the surface. Kamile’s creations resemble collages\, composed of fragmented components that form a complex network of symbols and codes. Her work is inspired by the reckless and ever-increasing combination of human excess and disregard for reality\, sparking new thoughts and ideas.\nVictoria Björk Ferrell also graduated from the Fine Arts department at the Icelandic University of the Arts in the spring of 2022. Victoria’s practice is a continuous research on the poetics of opposing forces and traces of tensions and emotions found in the atmosphere. With her work she explores humans’ intimate relation with time and nature; the absence of time\, ephemerality and eternities. Observing the collisions of time-scales and matter as if they’re fragments of performances left behind in the environment. Within the gradient\, where one thing fades into the other\, she likes to seek out narratives of what may have been and what might become.

DESCRIPTION:FERRELYTE er listamannadúó sem samanstendur af Kamile Pikelyte og Victoriu Björk Ferrell. Samstarfsverkefnið hófst síðla árs 2022 þegar listamennirnir hófu að rannsaka snertifleti verka sinna með hamfarir og vistfræðileg þemu í huga. „Í BRENNIDEPLI“ er fyrsta sýning FERRELYTE á verkum sem unnin eru í samstarfi beggja listamanna.\n\n\nOPNUNARTÍMAR\nLaugardagur 20.5: opnun + gjörningur kl. 14\nSunnudagur 21.5: opið 14-17\nLangur Fimmtudagur 26.5: opið 17-21\nLaugardagur 27.5: opið 14-17\nog eftir samkomulagi\n\n\nKamile Pikelyte er listamaður frá Litháen sem útskrifaðist frá myndlistardeild Listaháskóla Íslands vorið 2022. Þverfagleg listiðkun hennar raungerist í ýmsum miðlum svo sem myndböndum\, þrívíddarteikningum\, skúlptúr\, gjörningum og söfnun net-arkífa. Með listsköpun sinni gagnrýnir Kamile kerfisbundna flokkun ákveðinna hluta sem „óhreinna“ til að fela óþægilegan sannleika\, eins og arðrán\, fátækt og mengun. Verk hennar leitast við að draga fram í sviðsljósið faldan veruleika sem gjarnan liggur undir yfirborðinu. Sköpunarverk Kamile minna á klippimyndir úr sundurlausum hlutum sem mynda flókið net tákna og kóða. Verk hennar eru innblásin af kærulausri og sívaxandi samsetningu mannlegs óhófs og tillitsleysis við raunveruleikann sem kveikir nýjar hugleiðingar og hugmyndir.\nVictoria Björk Ferrell útskrifaðist einnig frá myndlistardeild Listaháskóla Íslands vorið 2022. Listiðkun Viktoríu er stöðug rannsókn á ljóðrænu andstæðra krafta og ummerki um spennu og tilfinningar í andrúmsloftinu. Með verkum sínum kannar hún náin tengsl mannsins við tíma og náttúru; fjarveru tíma\, hverfulleika og eilífðir\, og skoðar árekstra tímakvarða og efnis líkt og þau séu brot af gjörningum sem sitja eftir í umhverfinu. Í samrunanum\, þar sem eitt hverfur inn í annað\, leitar hún gjarnan að frásögnum um það sem gæti hafa verið og hvað gæti orðið.
