SUMMARY:Melanie Ubaldo: Completely Tasteless
DESCRIPTION:How does one commemorate appalling acts without turning it into a spectacle? For my master’s solo exhibition\, in early 2022\, I spray-painted the words „Farðu til fjandans helvítis útlendinga skíturinn þinn“ (Go to hell you fucking foreign shit) on the gallery windows in Breiðholt\, and all hell broke loose. \nThis solo exhibition is inspired by the backlash I received in connection with that textual work. The comments from strangers online have since become a minefield of hatred\, stupidity and racism\, serving as material for the exhibition. A private act of violence towards me has turned into a public debate on how we reconcile with racism in this country. The exhibition aims to reclaim the mechanism of language that racist speech exploits\, by deliberately manipulating its visibility and navigating the difference between seeing\, reading and ultimately – understanding. \nMelanie Ubaldo (born 1992) graduated with an MA in Fine Arts from the Iceland University of Arts in 2022. She is a founding member of the artist-trio Lucky 3 and has participated in exhibitions in Iceland and abroad. Her work can be found in the collections of Reykjavík Art Museum\, Hafnarborg and more.

SUMMARY:Melanie Ubaldo: TRAPO
SUMMARY:Melanie Ubaldo: TRAPO
DESCRIPTION:Specifically tailored for Ásmundarsalur\, TRAPO is the culmination of months of painstakingly painting and hand sewing the entirety of the exhibition space. The work\, in part\, pays homage to the works of the artist duo Christo and Jeanne-Claude and at the same time honouring the humble origins of Ubaldo´s painting practice that stems from trapo. \n“The colorful round palm sized rags that my mom and the other women used to sew\, in our poverty stricken neighborhood\, during my childhood in the Philippines\, out of leftover fabrics\, greatly inspires my deconstructionist painterly aesthetic. These rags are called trapo in my local Filipino language.” \nHand stitching the canvas is purposely employed as a stylistic device\, which is to say a piece of painterly rhetoric- an attempt at an aided serendipity. By covering the walls and leaving only its iconic windows\, the work confronts the audience\, with its scale\, questioning their experience of the space and simultaneously highlighting the physicality and the materiality of the painting. \nMelanie Ubaldo (b. 1992\, Philippines) graduated with MA Fine Arts from the Iceland University of Arts in 2022. Melanie has exhibited widely in Iceland and internationally. Melanie was the recipient of the Svavar Guðnasson and Ásta Eiríksdóttir fund for promising artists in Iceland in 2021. Alongside her solo practice\, Melanie is one of the founders of Lucky 3\, a collective of Icelandic artists of Filipino origins. Lucky 3 were the recipients of the Motivational Award from the Icelandic Art Prize in 2022. Her works have since been acquired by the National Gallery of Iceland and Reykjavik Art Museum and other institutions for their permanent collections and in private collections.

SUMMARY:Melanie Ubaldo: Almost Perfect
DESCRIPTION:Almost perfect is as anecdotal as all of my previous works.\nA complete stranger tells me something and it subconsciously has an immense effect on my practice. Talking about an old painting of mine that has since been “lost.” Almost perfect might just be the greatest compliment I’ve ever heard about my work. As if chasing the one that got away\, this exhibition is just one of many\, countless attempts at reclaiming/reimagining that which is almost perfect\nI don’t quite know what the stranger meant with almost perfect but I have since come to believe that it is the serendipitous happenstance -slightly off and it’s brilliant; and impossible to replicate. Anxious rubbing of oil and ink on serene canvas\, the plastic scent of acrylic mixed with toxic turpentine and spray\, foot steps and cat hair – almost perfect.\nMelanie Ubaldo (b. 1992\, Philippines) graduated with MA Fine Arts from the Iceland University of Arts in 2022. Her artistic practice is characterized by vulnerable autobiographical narratives around racism\, prejudice\, power and discrimination. Hand sewn paintings containing text with graffiti-like vandalism oftentimes of her own crude experiences of others preconceptions\, thus exposing the power of immediate\, unreflected judgment; and various installations that addresses memory\, displacement\, immigration and identity. Melanie has exhibited widely in Iceland and internationally. Melanie was the recipient of the Svavar Guðnasson and Ásta Eiríksdóttir fund for promising artists in 2021. Alongside her solo practice\, Melanie is one of the founders of Lucky 3\, a collective of Icelandic artists of Filipino origins. SUMMARY:So this is Christmas
DESCRIPTION:The Christmas exhibitions at Ásmundarsalur re-awaken a 70-year-old tradition. In the 1940’s the exhibition hall housed group shows with works by the country’s leading artists alongside works of younger and less known artists. The artist group Print & Friends have been curating the exhibition since its revival. This year’s exhibition “So this is Christmas” is no exception and will be their 4th consecutive year. With around 450 works by approx 170 contemporary artists\, this year’s focus being new works\, we know it will be the best one yet. According to tradition the works are for sale and can be wrapped in silkscreen-printed Christmas gift paper by staff members.\nPrint & Friends will install a custom-built printmaking workshop in one of the exhibition spaces where a careful selection of artists will work in situ producing artworks every day until Christmas. \nPrintmaking line-up! \n4-5.dec | Almar Steinn Atlason og Hákon Bragason \n6-7.dec | Anna Júlía Friðbjörnsdóttir \n8-9.dec | Joe Keys \n10-11.dec | Anna Rún Tryggvadóttir \n12-13.dec | Margrét Blöndal \n14-15.dec | Jón B.K Ransu \n 16-17.dec | Melanie Ubaldo \n 18-19.dec | Baldur Geir Bragason \n 20-21.dec | Kristinn Már Pálmason \n 22-23.dec | Tara Njála Ingvarsdóttir og Silfrún Una Guðlaugsdóttir

SUMMARY:Abracadabra
DESCRIPTION:In this diverse exhibition\, new works by contemporary artists are presented especially with children and young people in mind. The works are all in the collection of the Reykjavík Art Museum. Presentation\, mediation and education aims to open up the world of art as it appears today for younger audiences. Along with the exhibition\, there is a rich program as well as digital dissemination. “Abracadabra” is a word deriving from ancient languages that means: What I say becomes a reality. This is a magic word that describes how artists’ ideas become works of art. \nThe Reykjavík Art Museum’s collection houses a large number of works of art\, with about seventeen thousand registered works and sketches of various kinds. When acquiring works of art into the collection\, a choice is made that reflects the diversity of artistic creation at any given time. The exhibition Abracadabra aims to share the main elements that are found in the creative field of today. What characterizes today’s art? What are the artists’ subjects\, methods\, materials and challenges? \n  \nListamenn \nAlicja Kwade \nAnna Júlía Friðbjörnsdóttir \nAnna Hallin \nAnna Líndal \nAuður Lóa Guðnadóttir \nBaldur Geir Bragason \nEgill Sæbjörnsson \nFritz Hendrik IV \nGuðný Guðmundsdóttir \nHeimir Björgúlfsson \nHildigunnur Birgisdóttir \nHildur Bjarnadóttir \nHrafnhildur Arnardóttir/Shoplifter \nHreinn Friðfinnsson \nKarin Sander \nKatrín Elvarsdóttir \nKatrín Sigurðardóttir \nKristján Steingrímur Jónsson \nLeifur Ýmir Eyjólfsson \nLogi Leó Gunnarsson \nMagnús Helgason \nMargrét H. SUMMARY:SEQUENCES X - Lucky 3: PUTI
DESCRIPTION:The piece PUTI is a social choreography that reflects hyperreality\, racial roles and hierarchy by referencing an 8-hour workday. \nUnreliable narrators at best\, our voices speak of diaspora-of people experiencing constant displacement\, renovation and salvaging heritage in the face of cultural loss. With an unapologetically unabashed honesty and vulnerability\, the collective addresses issues\, but not limited to; the Filipino immigrant experience in Iceland\, displacement and racism. \nOpening Performance \nLucky 3 (est. 2019)  is a collective founded by Darren Mark\, Dýrfinna Benita Basalan\, and Melanie Ubaldo; Icelandic artists of Filipino origins. \nDarren Mark (b. 1993) graduated with a BA degree in Fashion Design from the IUA in 2017. He moved to Iceland from the Philippines when he was only eight years old with his family. Darren has exhibited at Dutch Design Week Eindhoven\, Designer’s Nest- Copenhagen Fashion Week and Design March. He mainly works with clothing\, from design and artistic aspects where the deconstruction-reconstruction method is applied\, sustainability is also an important part of his working methods were discarded or second hand clothes\, deadstock materials are thought of and used as a resource alongside new materials for creations. \nDýrfinna Benita Basalan (b. 1992) also known under her artist name Countess Malaise\, is born and raised in Iceland. She graduated with a BA in Art and Design from Gerrit Rietveld Academie in 2018 and has been an active artist in multiple disciplines and venues. Dýrfinna is also a member of The Blue Collective which is a collective of artists who work exploring  contemporary philosophical thematics in an amorphous format. In her painting and drawing\, her style often found femme and fantastical and full of fantasy. \nMelanie Ubaldo (b. 1992) graduated with a BA in Fine Arts from the IUA in 2016 and is currently in the MA Fine Arts program in the IUA. In Melanie’s work\, image and text are inextricably linked\, where deconstructionist paintings incorporate text with graffiti-like vandalism oftentimes of her own crude experiences of others preconceptions\, thus exposing the power of immediate\, unreflected judgment. She has taken part in various exhibitions at home and abroad. Her work has since been acquired by the Reykjavik Museum for its permanent collection. \n

SUMMARY:Community of Sentient Beings
DESCRIPTION:This year’s autumn exhibition at Hafnarborg is Community of Sentient Beings\, curated by Wiola Ujazdowska and Hubert Gromny. By inviting various professionals – artists\, academics\, performers – to participate in the exhibition\, the aim of the curators is to create a space for multiple voices to come together\, while reflecting on different ways of voicing\, hearing and sensing. In this way\, the exhibition will offer a space for various kinds of engagement\, with an emphasis on the project’s processual and performative nature\, by activating the space and exploring different ways of inhabiting it\, transforming the museum into the space of connectivity. \nLooking at our connection to the world as a community of sentient beings will allow us to open various paths of investigation\, whether it be the relationship between human and nature\, human and culture\, or human and human. The term sentient being allows us to abandon historically charged definitions\, to think of personhood and humans more broadly. At the core of the concept\, is an interrogation of the historical and social usage of a category of human\, which concerns whom and what we consider part of a community. Hafnarborg and its history also provide an interesting context for such investigation\, as changing the function from a pharmacy and chemist laboratory can be seen as a symbolic shift from healing practices based on science\, namely chemistry\, towards the spiritual and cultural agency of art. \nThis calls into question the tension between art and science\, as approaching art as a cognitive capacity may allow us to comprehend that which cannot be captured by scientific reason – connections between worlds known and unknown. Extending our perception\, the exhibition invites guests to sense a place or presence\, pondering the importance of memories and different modes of communication\, such as those mediated by technology\, and bringing to mind the changes in Icelandic society\, which is becoming more and more diverse. This diversity brings connection with other places\, other traditions and different spiritual practices. Each newcomer arrives with embodied knowledge\, a memory\, which is a basis to encounter new\, unknown land.
