SUMMARY:Kirsty Palmer: VELLIR
DESCRIPTION:Laugardaginn 28. október kl. 16 verður opnuð sýning á verkum Kirsty Palmer í Úthverfu á Ísafirði. \n  \nKirsty Palmer útskrifaðist úr MFA-námi við The Glasgow School of Art árið 2014 og áður með BA (Hons) árið 2010. Frá árinu 2016 hefur hún unnið jöfnum höndum í heimalandi sínu Skotlandi og á Íslandi. \nHún hefur dvalið sem gestalistamaður hjá ArtsIceland á Ísafirði\, Skaftfelli myndlistarmiðstöð (Seyðisfirði)\, SÍM (Reykjavík) og Fish Factory (Stöðvarfirði).

SUMMARY:Kirsty Palmer: FIELDS
DESCRIPTION:FIELDS is a new body of two and three-dimensional work developed for Gallerí Úthverfa. It follows recent residencies undertaken with ArtsIceland (2022) and Skaftfell Centre for Visual Art (2020). \nRooted in interaction with materials\, place and process\, Kirsty Palmer’s practice addresses ideas surrounding landscape\, archaeology and materiality\, often resulting in bodies of work which are site-specific or temporary in nature. \nFIELDS brings together a series of images and sculptural objects which draw attention to the micro and macro\, the close and distant. Referencing wider practices including geology\, walking and mapping\, FIELDS considers notions of terrain\, territory and landscape(s) as sites of memorial. It looks to geological (and man-made) matter – often small in scale – as signifiers of much larger-scale or long-term processes or events. It considers the broader notion of foundations and transformative events as echoing shifts in our own (human) foundations. \nFIELDS includes a new piece of printed matter; a double-sided broadsheet in an edition of 100. \nFIELDS is supported by Creative Scotland Open Project funding. \nKirsty Palmer graduated from the MFA programme at The Glasgow School of Art in 2014\, and with BA (Hons) in 2010. Since 2016\, her practice has increasingly been based between her home country of Scotland and Iceland. She has recently been artist in residence with ArtsIceland\, Skaftfell Center for Visual Art (Seyðisfjörður)\, SÍM (Reykjavik) and Fish Factory (Stöðvarfjörður). \nRecent exhibitions include Terrain\, Patriothall Gallery\, Edinburgh (2023); QUARRY\, South Block\, Glasgow (2021); Matter / Efni\, Skaftfell\, Seyðisfjörður (2020); LANDING\, Glasgow Project Room\, Glasgow (2019); Of A Mountain/ Af fjalli\, Bræðraborg\, Ísafjörður (2018).

SUMMARY:DREGIN LÍNA
DESCRIPTION:Á milli Sigrúnar Gyðu og Svavars Guðnasonar\, Elísabetar Önnu og Karls Kvaran hefur verið dregin lína.

SUMMARY:Eygló Harðardóttir: Your turn
DESCRIPTION:The exhibition features new two- and three-dimensional abstract sculptures as well as her newest artist book “Your turn”\, which will be published at the same time as the exhibition opening in Gunnfríðargryfja. The book work is traced back to Varanasi\, where Eygló stayed during an artist residency in 2019-2020. The core of the book work are layered stacks of Indian paper\, bound together\, made from easily obtained handmade paper\, different coloured threads and ancient dyes obtained in Varanasi. Along with the Indian materials\, sandpaper\, velvet paper\, oil and dry pastels have been added to the work during the two years of creative process in Reykjavík. “Your turn” is the meeting of two very different places on two continents that together form a multi-part and multi-layered work\, where time and materials are submerged and the transformative process has its turn.

SUMMARY:Value: 40 Years Since the Founding of Hafnarborg
DESCRIPTION:A museum or a collection reflects the values of the one doing the collecting. This applies to a public or private collection in equal measure. The collection becomes a statement of the priorities of the person(s) that founded it – whether by sheer interest\, a deep-rooted passion and inner need\, or even by happenstance. When a collection is then passed on to the community\, it gains a life of its own\, revealing something about the community itself as it continues to grow. About the ever-changing zeitgeist and people’s preferences\, about materials and focus\, about ideas and ambitions. \nThe exhibition will feature select works\, acquired by the museum since 2008 – or in the last fifteen years – by artists Egill Sæbjörnsson\, Georg Guðni\, Guðný Rósa Ingimarsdóttir\, Haraldur Jónsson\, Hildigunnur Birgisdóttir\, Ingólfur Arnarsson\, Ingunn Fjóla Ingþórsdóttir\, Philipp Valenta\, Sirra Sigrún Sigurðardóttir and Una Björg Magnúsdóttir. Some of the works have not been exhibited at Hafnarborg previously. \nCurated by Hólmar Hólm.

SUMMARY:Sequences XI: Can’t See — Metaphysical Realm
DESCRIPTION:Enter the metaphysical realm\, the world where linear and rational truths are questioned. \nThe search for new forms and artistic explorations takes the form of twisted geometries\, tangled spheres and absorbing spirals. Here we start diffusing the tortured lines between imagination and reality\, uncertainty and knowledge to enmesh the fixed understandings of necessity and possibility. The mind needs to be shifted both at the individual and societal level in order to make room for the new which might as well also be a long forgotten truth. \nThis exhibition stems from the surrounding darkness. It starts from the feeling that the world is crumbling in our hands\, while a strong wind blows the last of its remains even further. We cannot see the ever-growing threat of ecological destruction\, just as we cannot see the potential new directions and life forms rising from the ruins of the old world. \nCan’t See is divided into four chapters\, which will provide a glimpse into spaces and times that are not usually perceived by the human eye: from the depths of the sea and layers beneath the soil to the debris of the past and visions of the future. The stories are told from a range of perspectives\, from hybrid birds to bacteria\, sea creatures\, an ancient tree or the ever blasting wind\, aiming to present different ways of seeing and experiencing the world that detach from the  numerous perspectives we are accustomed to. The moment in time is not fixed\, allowing us to travel deep into the mythical past or imagine futures yet to come. \nArtists: Agnes Denes\, Daria Melnikova\, Elo-Reet Järv\, Gerður Helgadóttir\, Ólöf Nordal\, Zenta Logina \nCurators: Marika Agu\, Maria Arusoo\, Kaarin Kivirähk\, Sten Ojavee (Estonian Centre for Contemporary Art)

SUMMARY:Ian McKeever: Henge Paintings
DESCRIPTION:Herbert Read described it as the moment of liberation. ‘Once it is accepted’\, he wrote\, ‘that the plastic imagination has at its command\, not the fixities of a perspectival point of view…but the free association of any visual elements (whether derived from nature or constructed apriori)\, then the way is open to an activity which has little correspondence with the plastic arts of the past.’ Writing in 1959\, Read defined the trajectory in modern painting which sprang from the experiments in ‘pure art’ conducted by Robert Delaunay\, Wassily Kandinsky and others at the end of the first decade in the twentieth century. Their innovations would lead to the flowering of abstract painting\, a means of expression unburdened by ‘an irrelevant representational function’. Freed from imitating the observed world\, henceforward artists could construct non-representational structures that would\, it was assumed\, ‘appeal directly to human sensibility1. As Read’s words suggest\, such ideas had a heady significance but also posed profound questions\, not least concerning the capacity of abstract painting to transcend its own formal means. Can non-figurative art – a visual language of marks\, shapes and colours – truly serve as a vehicle for meaning\, and\, if so\, what exactly is being conveyed? Over a hundred years later\, such questions still provoke debate. In that context\, the work of Ian McKeever constitutes a compelling affirmation of abstract painting’s continuing relevance in the twenty-first century.

DESCRIPTION:This exhibition stems from the surrounding darkness. It starts from the feeling that the world is crumbling in our hands\, while a strong wind blows the last of its remains even further. We cannot see the ever-growing threat of ecological destruction\, just as we cannot see the potential new directions and life forms rising from the ruins of the old world. \nThis chapter opens its doors to the ground level. It’s an earthy\, bubbling\, crumbling surface\, where an attentive observer might discover life in its various forms. Often not noticeable or known to people\, life in the soil has its own cycles and rules. The soil level at Kling&Bang is as ruined as it is blossoming\, it is both the apocalypse and the start of the new. The human-created garden has collapsed and is seeking its final destruction. New life forms are emerging inside a decaying tree trunk. Weird creatures crawl around the space\, and yet to be seen landscapes mesmerise us with their stunning views. \nArtists showing at Kling & Bang: \nBjarki Bragason (IS)\nAlma Heikkilä (FI)\nAntti Laitinen (FI)\nElo-Reet Järv (EE)\nGuðrún Nielsen (IS)\nGústav Geir Bollason (IS)\nJohannes S. SUMMARY:Hilda de Paulo & Tales Frey: Conducting Wire
DESCRIPTION:The exhibition will present a selection of works by the Brazilian artists Hilda de Paulo (born 1987) and Tales Frey (born 1982)\, who have been working together for over fifteen years. By transiting through the most diverse formats\, their productions are a dialogue with multiple fields\, such as the visual arts\, the scenic arts\, and the performing arts. They define themselves as a notable example of a practice on the edge\, exploring the power of what is adjacent. \nIn the exhibition\, they are interested in articulating both productions\, identifying their points of meeting and convergence\, the result of the long collaborative coexistence between the two artists. Hilda actively participates in Tales’ performances\, who\, in turn\, is present in many of Hilda’s works. What is incorporated from one to the other? What are the boundaries between life and work? What is the relationship made of? In this collaboration\, the artist’s works are presented as politics of desire\, with the aim of building other modes of existence. \nBoth artists finished their university degrees in Portugal\, Hilda in Art History and Tales in Theatre Studies. \nCurator: Pollyana Quintella.

SUMMARY:Skúlptúr/Skúlptúr
DESCRIPTION:Sýningaröðin Skúlptúr/Skúlptúr er nú haldin í fimmta skiptið í Gerðarsafni þar sem leitast er við að kanna hver staða höggmyndalistar sé í samtíma okkar. Sýningaröðin kannar þróun þrívíðrar myndlistar með vísunum í frumkvöðlastarf Gerðar Helgadóttur (1928-1975) innan íslenskrar höggmyndalistar. Titillinn vísar til sýningarinnar Skúlptúr/skúlptúr/skúlptúr\, samsýningu 29 listamanna sem haldin var á Kjarvalsstöðum árið 1994 og gaf veigamikið yfirlit yfir höggmyndalist þess tíma.\nÞessi fimmta sýning í röðinni hér í Gerðarsafni er með öðru sniði en áður þar sem leitast er við að taka stöðu á skúlptúrnum í dag með samsýningu tíu listamanna. Enginn einn samnefnari er með þeim listamönnum sem taka þátt í sýningunni en í samtali verka þeirra má finna forvitnilegar vísanir í stöðu skúlptúrsins sem listmiðils\, möguleika hans og samband við samtíma okkar. \nSýningarstjórar Skúlptúr/Skúlptúr eru Brynja Sveinsdóttir og\nCecilie Cedet Gaihede. \nListamenn:\nAndreas Brunner\nAnna Líndal\nClaire Paugam\nElísabet Brynhildardóttir\nEygló Harðardóttir\nGeirþrúður Finnbogadóttir Hjörvar\nIngrid Ogenstedt\nÍvar Glói Gunnarsson Breiðfjörð\nMartha Haywood\nRaimonda Sereikaitė

SUMMARY:Sculpture/Sculpture
DESCRIPTION:The exhibition series Sculpture/Sculpture is now held for the fifth time in Gerðarsafn\, where an attempt is made to explore the position sculpture holds in modern times. The series explores the development of three-dimensional art\, with references to the pioneering work of Gerður Helgadóttir (1928-1975) within Icelandic sculpture. The title refers to Sculpture/Sculpture/Sculpture\, a 1994 group exhibition of 29 artists at Kjarvalsstaðir which offered an important overview of Icelandic sculpture at the time.\nThis fifth exhibition in the series at Gerðarsafn is different from the previous ones as it seeks to assess the status of modern sculpture with works from ten different artists. There is no single common denominator with all the participating artists\, but the discourse between their works unveils interesting references to sculpture’s status as an art medium\, its possibilities and its relevance to the present times. \nThe curators of Sculpture/Sculpture are Brynja Sveinsdóttir and Cecilie Cedet Gaihede. \nArtists:\nAndreas Brunner\nAnna Líndal\nClaire Paugam\nElísabet Brynhildardóttir\nEygló Harðardóttir\nGeirþrúður Finnbogadóttir Hjörvar\nIngrid Ogenstedt\nÍvar Glói Gunnarsson Breiðfjörð\nMartha Haywood\nRaimonda Sereikaitė

SUMMARY:Landscape for the Chosen Ones
DESCRIPTION:The exhibition Landscape for the Chosen Ones explores different aspects of escapism. We live in a time of overwhelming and drastic changes within a society that increasingly expects individuals to take personal responsibility for global issues. Therefore\, escapism has become intertwined with everyday life. \nEscapism is not a new phenomenon\, as we have indulged in it for centuries. Its manifestations are and have been multifaceted\, but one thing they all have in common is that they reflect the situations they are sprouted from. Escapism does not merely mirror reality but it also affects those who momentarily choose these alternative worlds. \nThe exhibition hopes to raise questions such as: Why do we escape? Is it positive or negative? What situation do we escape today? What does the current landscape of escapism look like? And who has access to it? \nThe participating artists are Arna Beth\, Fritz Hendrik IV\, Margrét Helga Sesseljudóttir\, Sól Hansdóttir\, Vikram Pradhan\, Bíbí Söring and Þrándur Jóhannsson\, but the exhibition also features works by Eiríkur Smith\, Patrick Huse and Sigrid Valtingojer from the collection of Hafnarborg and the ASÍ Art Museum. \nThe curators of the exhibition are Eva Lín Vilhjálmsdóttir and Odda Júlía Snorradóttir.

SUMMARY:Sirra Sigrún Sigurðardóttir: Almanak

SUMMARY:Nokkur nýleg verk
DESCRIPTION:Á sýningunni má sjá úrval verka sem Listasafn Íslands hefur\, samkvæmt tillögum innkaupanefndar safnsins\, keypt á undanförnum fjórum árum. Hugmyndin með sýningu á nýjum aðföngum í safneigninni er sú að varpa ljósi á mikilvægan þátt í starfsemi safnsins og á þær áherslur sem endurspeglast í innkaupum hverju sinni. \nÁ sýninguna hafa verið valin verk eftir 12 listamenn sem fjalla með ýmsum hætti um tengsl manns og náttúru\, auk þess að gefa góða mynd af ólíkum sjónarhornum\, aðferðum og efnistökum í listsköpun samtímans. Verkin á sýningunni birta sjónarhorn sem mótað er af mannlegri reynslu og viðhorfum\, eða eins og Anna Guðjónsdóttir orðar það í tengslum við landslagshefð í málaralist: „Fyrir mér er landslag skapað af manneskjunni\, sem sagt náttúra höfð á þann veg sem við viljum hafa hana\, sjá hana\, nota hana.“ Verk hennar byggir á æskuminningum frá Þingvöllum\, miðlægum stað í þjóðarvitundinni. Staðir og minningar sem þeim tengjast mynda raunar leiðarstef á sýningunni\, hvort sem um ræðir Þingvelli\, Þjórsá\, Dyrfjöll\, Heklu eða Mosfellssveit\, smágerða náttúruheima\, erlenda almenningsgarða eða heilu heimsálfurnar. Myndverkin geta einnig birt áhorfandanum táknræna\, ímyndaða eða huglæga staði\, þótt þeir finnist ekki á landakortum. \nÍ endursköpun sinni á stöðum hafa listamennirnir ýmist mótað áferð þeirra og lögun í leir eða önnur efni\, fangað ásýnd þeirra í málverk\, vefnað\, á filmu eða í stafrænan miðil\, eða jafnvel hnikað vettvanginum til með því að taka úr honum sýnishorn. Í öllum tilvikum hefur átt sér stað einhvers konar umbreyting sem gefur til kynna hið menningarlega sjónarhorn eða afmörkun listamannsins. Verkin eiga það sameiginlegt að vekja okkur til vitundar um tengsl menningar og náttúru\, oft með gagnrýnum undirtónum sem tengjast verndunarsjónarmiðum og endurmati á stöðu mannsins á viðsjárverðum tímum í kjölfar iðnvæðingar\, ofnýtingar og ágangs gagnvart jörðinni. Með verkum sínum varpa listamennirnir fram grundvallarspurningum: Hvaðan komum við? Hvert stefnum við? Hvaða ábyrgð berum við á umhverfi okkar og náttúrunni?

SUMMARY:Some Recent Works - new acquistions
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition presents a selection of works that have been purchased by the National Gallery of Iceland in the past four years\, on the recommendation of the gallery’s acquisitions board. By holding an exhibition of recent acquisitions\, the intention is to provide insight into this important aspect of the gallery’s work and the priorities that guide acquisitions at any time. \nWorks by twelve artists have been selected for the exhibition; all of them address\, in one way or another\, the relationship between humans and nature\, while also providing a good overview of diverse viewpoints\, methods and approaches in contemporary art. The works on display present a perspective that is informed by human experience and attitudes\, as Anna Guðjónsdóttir puts it in the context of the landscape tradition in painting: “As I see it\, landscape is created by the individual; in other words\, we have nature in the way we want it\, to see it and use it.” Her work is grounded in her childhood memories from Þingvellir\, the ancient parliamentary site which has a central place in Icelanders’ national consciousness. Places\, and memories that relate to them\, make up a leitmotiv in the exhibition\, whether the connection is with Þingvellir\, the Þjórsá river\, the Dyrfjöll mountains\, Mt. Hekla or Mosfellssveit\, tiny natural worlds\, public parks in other countries\, or entire continents. The works of art can also present to the observer symbolic\, imaginary or subjective places\, not to be found on maps. \nIn their recreation of places\, the artists have moulded their texture or shape in clay or other materials\, captured their appearance in paint or textile\, on film or digital media\, or even shifted the site by taking and displaying samples from it. In every case\, some kind of transformation has taken place that hints at the artist’s cultural perspective or demarcation. The works share the quality of raising our consciousness of the relationship between culture and nature\, often with a critical undertone relating to nature conservation\, and a re-evaluation of humanity’s place in these hazardous times arising from industrial development\, overuse of resources and encroachment on the environment of the earth. Through their art\, the artists pose fundamental questions: Where do we come from? Where are we going? What are our responsibilities for nature and our environment?

SUMMARY:Ragnheiður Jónsdóttir: Kosmos / Kaos
DESCRIPTION:When considering Ragnheiður Jónsdóttir’s oeuvre within the field of drawing and graphic art in Iceland’s art history\, her iconic status is evident. The exhibition Cosmos/Chaos marks the year of her 90th birthday\, and Ragnheiður’s messages from the 1970s regarding women’s empowerment\, environmental awareness and social responsibility are still remarkably apt in the present day. Her graphic works depict everyday phenomena rich in symbolism\, referencing industrial development\, political turmoil and unrest\, damage to nature\, social activism\, the patriarchy and the women’s movement. Starkly relevant to our present social and environmental issues\, her works remain sharp and contemporary today.\nRagnheiður’s early works are characterised by powerful symbolism\, together with the meticulous and detailed-oriented hard labour that typifies the arduous medium of graphic art. The themes of her graphic works are unsettling and intriguing – abounding in surrealism and dry wit. Ragnheiður draws upon cultural metaphors within bizarre forms and creations that directly reference political\, moral and social issues in Iceland at the time. Her graphic works strongly influenced the women’s liberation movement\, and to this day she is seen as one of the leading pioneers of feminist art in Iceland. Her practice is one of contrasts – and not only the literal contrast between black and white. Ragnheiður’s works are rooted in the dichotomy between meticulousness and freedom\, abstraction and symbolism\, natural and mechanical\, pictorial representation and emotive feeling\, between graphic art and free-form drawing. In the 1990s\, Ragnheiður began working solely with large-scale charcoal drawing\, leaving behind the time-consuming and precise practice of graphic art she had spent a lifetime mastering. Moving away from a literal symbolic language\, in this new direction Ragnheiður focussed on an imagery of pure expression and abstraction. Ragnheiður’s charcoal drawings were no less incisive and trenchant than her graphic works\, but they were imbued with more freedom of movement\, a quality of lightness\, and abstract symbolism.\nWhat lessons can be learned from Ragnheiður’s 60 years as a pioneer of graphic art and gestural drawing? Her shifting and constantly evolving practice points to something inherent within human nature – the need for freedom\, abstraction\, breathing and movement\, amidst the bustle of everyday existence. Ragnheiður’s career attests to the impact an artist can have on their society\, the power a single artistic voice has to call attention to issues\, to urge action\, and to influence social and political change\, generation after generation.\n——————————\nRagnheiður held his first solo exhibition in 1968 and has been working non-stop on art since. Ragnheiður’s work is often about self-deception – blindness – greed – loneliness – restlessness – the environment – our world.\nRagnheiður says that\, in her mind\, art is a conversation between the artist and the viewer. That the purpose is achieved when she manages to move the viewer.\n\nCurator: Daría Sól Andrews

SUMMARY:Sigga Björg Sigurðardóttir: Yfir strikið
Teikningarnar eru ekki eftirlíkingar raunveruleika\, heldur sinn eiginn raunveruleiki..” (´úr sýningarskrá)\n\nSigga Björg lauk MFA gráðu frá Glasgow School of Art 2004\, og hefur síðan sýnt verk sín á einka- og samsýningum víða um heim. Sem dæmi um einkasýningar má nefna Listasafn Reykjavíkur – Ásmundarsafn\, Yancey Richardson Gallery New York\, Teckningsmuseet í Svíþjóð\, Kling og Bang\, Hverfisgallerí\, og Hafnarborg. Auk þáttöku í samsýningum\, meðal annars í Göteborgs Konsthall í Svíþjóð\, The Centre For Contemporary Art\, Glasgow\, National Galleries of Scotland\, Edinborg og á Listasafni Íslands.   Verk hennar má finna í safneign Listasafns Reykjavíkur\, Nordiska Akvarellmuseet í Svíþjóð\, Listasafns Íslands\, Zabludowicz Art Trust London og Kunsthaus Zürich í Sviss svo eitthvað sé nefnt.

SUMMARY:Jakob Veigar Sigurðsson: May Your Hand Not Hurt
DESCRIPTION:Jakob Veigar (born 1975 in Hveragerði\, Iceland) currently lives and works in Vienna. His u-turn into the art world happened quite late in life\, after a whole life and career as a civil engineer.\nJakob graduated with a Bachelor’s degree from the Icelandic University of the Arts in 2016\, and continued to become „Herr Magister“ at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna in 2019.\nPainting is Jakob’s main medium\, inspired mainly by personal experience\, an alcoholic mind that tries to understand the society he lives in\, and his deep connection to nature.\nJakob has used his journeys to culturally diverse places such as India and Iran to expand the horizon of his work\, and to deepen both his understanding and his connection to countries very different from his own.\nDespite a rather short career in the art world\, Jakob’s works can be found in private collections all over the world. His paintings have been exhibited in Iceland\, around Europe\, and in China.\n“May Your Hand Not Hurt” is the story of a passage from Iceland to Iran; of an artist who chased love\, between continents\, in times of a global pandemic. An odyssey into one of the world’s oldest civilizations\, where he found pieces of himself in landscapes vastly different from his own. Of a love lost on the way\, all while collecting stories and works from artisanal and nomadic communities all over Iran. From dirty rags all the way to priceless textiles and embroidery\, Jakob Veigar uses these materials to create an entirely new world of his own.
