DESCRIPTION:Geimurinn er eins og blaðra sem stöðugt er verið að blása upp. Eða það segir pabbi hennar Líf að minnsta kosti. Líf er stelpa sem býr á efstu hæð í háhýsi í borginni. Líf horfir út í geim úr stjörnusjónaukanum sínum og slæst í för með stelpu um borð í geimskip frá tímum geimkapphlaupsins mikla. Geimstelpan bjó eitt sinn á jörðinni en býr nú ásamt svörtum hundi á reikistjörnu sem er ljósár í burtu. Hvernig ætli sé að búa úti í geimi fjarri mömmu og pabba og ljósum borgarinnar? Hvernig ætli alheimurinn líti út séður úr geimskipi? \nLíf í geimnum er ný barnasýning sem er innblásin af myndskreyttri sögu með sama nafni\, unnin í samvinnu Zakiya Ajmi (f. 1992) og Söru Lundberg (f. 1971). Sagan og myndirnar voru birtar fyrr á þessu ári (2022) í safnritinu The Length and Breadth of the Nordic Region. Safnaritið var unnið af Norræna húsinu sem hluti af þriggja ára verkefninu LØFTET\, sem er styrkt af Norrænu ráðherranefndinni. Þessi útgáfa er sú síðasta í safnritinu í röð þriggja\, sem öll eru afrakstur norræns samstarfs ýmissa vísindamanna\, útgefenda\, höfunda og myndskreyta sem hafa fengið tækifæri til að vinna saman á árlegum sumarnámskeiðum verkefnisins.

SUMMARY:Life in the Universe
DESCRIPTION:Liv is a girl that lives on the top floor in a house in the city\, just beneath the starry sky. Liv’s father has told her that space is constantly expanding\, like a balloon that is being blown up more and more. With her telescope\, Liv looks up into space and takes on a journey in a spaceship with a girl that has been travelling in space since the Space Race many decades ago. In space\, light years away from Earth\, Liv gets to visit a planet which is the home of her new friend as well as a lonely black dog. How would life be away from the citylights and what Liv calls a home? How would you think it would be like to experience the world from far above?  \nLiv in Space is a new children’s exhibition which is inspired by an illustrated story of the same name\, created in collaboration between Zakiya Ajmi (b. 1992) and Sara Lundberg (b. 1971). The story and illustrations were published earlier this year (2022) in the anthology The Length and Breadth of the Nordic Region. The anthology was produced by the Nordic House as a part of the three-year project LØFTET\, which is funded by the Nordic Council of Ministers. This edition is the last in the anthology in a series of three\, all of which are the result of Nordic collaboration between various researchers\, publishers\, authors and illustrators who have had the opportunity to work together at the project’s annual summer seminars.

DESCRIPTION:Boreal Crush Pack \nOpening on Sat feb 26th hr. 2 – 5pm \nAlso open on Sun feb 27th hr. 2 – 5pm \nGil Artist in Residence Melanie Clemmons exhibits the products of her stay. \nDigital asset packs\, a collection of digital files often organized around a theme\, have spiked in popularity for use in video games like Fortnite and Roblox\, as well as in social media and the (possibly) looming Metaverse. These ‘bundles’ or ‘packs’ contain 3D models\, images\, sounds and animations\, among other file types. While in residency at the Gil society\, Melanie Clemmons created an asset pack using photogrammetry and 3d scanning processes. Akureyri’s flora and landscapes serve as the raw material for Clemmons’ assets\, however the resulting pieces are warped\, contorted\, crushed\, and whorled\, existing more as symbols of unreality than recognizable objects. \nIn the exhibition Boreal Crush Pack\, viewers are invited to explore worlds Clemmons has created using her distorted asset pack. Works on display include interactive 3D animations\, video art\, and virtual and augmented reality. \nAll ages gleefully welcome. \nMelanie Clemmons (she/they) is a new media artist interested in reimagining technology toward a more careful and sublime future. SUMMARY:Ásmundur Sveinsson and Rósa Gísladóttir
DESCRIPTION:Rósa Gísladóttir exhibits her work in a conversation with the work of Ásmundur Sveinsson. Sculptors from different periods meet in dialogue that offers a new insight into Ásmundur’s heritage and introduces new works by a contemporary artist to the viewers. \nIn her career\, Rósa has worked with various materials but she is best known for plaster sculptures which have taken on different shapes and sizes throughout her career. She often works with artistic references to architecture and cultural history and will utilise Ásmundarsafn\, the museum building itself\, as a sculpture. Ásmundur built “The Dome Building” at Sigtún in a few stages between 1942 and 1959. It was his home and his studio\, and here the studio atmosphere from both Ásmundur and Rósa will meet and become visible. \nRósa Gísladóttir (b. 1957) studied art in Germany\, England and Iceland. Her work has been exhibited widely in Iceland and abroad\, including in Scandinavia House in New York\, Saatchi Gallery in London\, Reykjavík Art Museum\, Hafnarborg Centre of Culture and Fine Art\, LÁ Art Museum and Berg Contemporary. In 2020\, Rósa became the first recipient of the Gerður Award\, given to an outstanding sculptor. \nÁsmundur Sveinsson (1893-1982) was among the pioneers of Icelandic sculpture and one of the artists who introduced new art ideas to Icelanders in the 20th century. Ásmundur was inspired by Icelandic folktales and myths\, but he also drew a lot from the society and technological advances of his time. Ásmundur’s work can be found in public places all over the country and are prominent in Reykjavík. He stayed true to his opinion that the art should be for the people and belonged with the people. \nÁsmundur left his works and his home to the city of Reykjavík. DESCRIPTION:Rósa Gísladóttir sýnir verk sín í samtali við verk Ásmundar Sveinssonar. Myndhöggvarar tveggja tíma mætast í samtali sem veitir nýja sýn á arfleifð Ásmundar ásamt því að kynna fyrir gestum ný verk starfandi listamanns. \nRósa hefur á ferli sínum fengist við ýmsan efnivið en hún er þekktust fyrir gifsskúlptúra sem hafa tekið á sig ólík form og stærðir í gegnum tíðina. Í verkum sínum vinnur Rósa gjarnan með listrænar tilvísanir í arkitektúr og menningarsöguna og mun vinna með Ásmundarsafn sjálft sem skúlptúr. Ásmundur reisti „kúluhúsið“ við Sigtún í nokkrum áföngum á árunum 1942-59. Hann hafði þar heimili og vinnustofu og mun vinnustofustemmning þeirra beggja\, Ásmundar og Rósu\, mætast og vera gerð sýnileg. \nRósa Gísladóttir (f. 1957) nam myndlist í Þýskalandi\, Bretlandi og á Íslandi. Verk hennar hafa verið sýnd víða hérlendis og erlendis\, þar á meðal í Scandinavia House í New York\, Saatchi Gallery í London\, Listasafni Reykjavíkur\, Hafnarborg\, Listasafni Árnesinga og Berg Contemporary. Árið 2020 var Rósa fyrsti handhafi Gerðarverðlaunanna sem eru veitt framúrskarandi myndlistarmanni sem vinnur í skúlptúr og rýmisverk. \nÁsmundur Sveinsson (1893–1982) var á meðal frumkvöðla íslenskrar höggmyndalistar og einn þeirra sem kynntu fyrir Íslendingum nýjar hugmyndir í myndlist 20. aldar. Ásmundur sótti innblástur í íslenskar sagnir og þjóðtrú en samfélagið og tækniframfarir 20. aldar voru honum einnig ríkuleg uppspretta hugmynda. DESCRIPTION:The exhibition places emphasis on Icelandic landscapes\, with the aim of reflecting on and re-evaluating the relationship that humans have with the earth. The Anthropocene is a proposed term for the current geological epoch\, defined by human impact on the planet\, which has become so significant that it can be construed as a geological force. The fallout includes global warming\, ocean acidification\, the sixth mass extinction event and so on. Urgent action must be taken to combat this vast issue on all fronts\, employing all means and methods\, ranging from the sciences to the arts\, the personal and the communal. In the matters of sustainable development\, we require a wide range of solutions\, rather than looking for a single answer. \nTouching Landscape is the working title of Tinna Gunnarsdóttir’s ongoing doctoral research project\, which focuses on the aesthetic experience of landscape as a force for positive change. DESCRIPTION:“In another house” is a collaborative exhibition by Guðlaug Mía Eyþórsdóttir\, Hanna Dís Whitehead & Steinunn Önnudóttir. \nThe exhibition takes the shape of a home. The authors delineate personal quarters\, external bounds and internal spaces\, but expose only limited areas. The authors’ works come together in these scenes and form an unusual material language in familiar settings.\nIn the works of Hanna Dís\, Guðlaug and Steinunn there are common themes. They all work in the intersection of art and design but in this project they meet on the borders of these worlds and present an exhibition which belongs to neither but instead intently defies such definitions. \nGuðlaug Mía Eyþórsdóttir (b.1988) completed a BA degree from the Fine Art Department of Iceland University of the Arts in 2012 and later studied at the MA program in Fine Art at the Koninklijke Academie in Gent\, Belgium\, from which she graduated in 2018. In her practice Guðlaug concerns herself with the sculptural aspects of our surroundings\, observes the forms\, textures and acts they consist of and explores whether daily activities can be materialized. Guðlaug has initiated a broad range of projects within the arts and has worn many hats as a publisher\, curator and researcher. Between 2012-19 she initiated\, along with fellow artists\, the exhibition venues Kunschlager in Reykjavík and ABD Klubhuis in Antwerp\, Belgium and is now a board member of The Living Art Museum. Guðlaug has exhibited widely both in Iceland and abroad and was nominated for the encouragement award of the Icelandic Art Price in 2020. \nHanna Dís Whitehead (b. 1982) graduated Cum Laude from the Design Academy Eindhoven in the Netherlands in 2011. She has exhibited widely both abroad and in Iceland for example Danmark\, Sweden\, Finland and England. Interested in the dialogue between an object and the viewer\, her works waiver on the borders of art\, design\, and craft\, often going between diverse materials within the same subject. She runs her design studio in the Southeast of Iceland\, focusing on a hands-on approach towards her subject and describing herself as very process-driven\, often interweaving stories with shape\, materials\, color\, and drawing. \nSteinunn Önnudóttir (b.1984) lives and works in Reykjavík\, Iceland. She completed her BA in Graphic design at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie\, Amsterdam\, in 2009 and her BA in Audiovisual at the same academy in 2011. Steinunn has exhibited in group shows in Iceland and abroad\, most notably Feigðarós at Kling&Bang in 2021\, Non Plus Ultra (solo) at Reykjavík Art Museum in 2019\, Skúlptúr Skúlptúr at Kópavogur Art Museum in 2018\, and Gone with the wind\, by the Reykjavík Sculptors’ Association in 2018. Since 2014 Steinunn has been running the Harbinger Project Space and she is part of the publishing duo In volumes\, which publishes artist books and monographs. \nSteinunn works mostly in the mediums of painting and sculpture\, which in her practice tend to blend together. She experiments with the dimensions of painting\, letting it escape the flatness of its two-dimensionality and become a part of the surrounding environment. Thereby her paintings evoke a physical experience as they can be circled or even traversed. Through her work Steinunn creates connotations of staging versus reality\, and works with subjects such as deconstruction\, illusion\, origin and imitation.

DESCRIPTION:Hildur Ása Henrýsdóttir \nCurated by Linda Toivio \nGallery Port\, Reykjavik / 19 February – 3 March 2022 \nThe solo exhibition of Berlin-based artist Hildur Henrýsdóttir reveals an embarrassing one-sided love story. Looking for validation in all the wrong places -one-night encounters\, disastrous dates and doomed romances- it opens up a painfully relatable path to self-loathing\, anxiety and the need for acceptance. The title Marga hildi háð\, loosely translated as “she fought many battles”\, borrows the artist’s first name Hildur\, meaning battle in Icelandic. In our contemporary society\, these battles are metaphorical and refer to her inner turmoil. Consisting of paintings and sculptures\, the autobiographical works are delicate and raw\, often triggering feelings of shame and regret. Despite fearing rejection more than anything\, Hildur throws herself time after time into an obsessive quest for love\, exposing a shared human vulnerability: “I refresh my Instagram to see if you’ve watched my story. I kind of feel like you’re close to me when you do. If you don’t\, I feel like you have somehow abandoned me.” \nThrough an unapologetic representation of the female body\, her works bear similarities with the nude paintings of Jenny Saville\, who often uses herself as the model in her portraits. Besides sharing an autobiographical character\, both artists provide an almost grotesque yet truthful depiction of the female reality. Saville’s obese nudes and the awkward poses painted by Hildur are akin to an act of rebellion: oh\, the audacity of a woman showing her unpleasant and ugly side. What is defied here\, is an entire institution of looking at the female body through the lens of patriarchy\, where the male gaze dictates what type of bodies have the right to exist and be seen. \nDespite the persisting nudity throughout the exhibition\, the body is depicted as a non-sexual entity\, instead allowing the nakedness to stand as a metaphor for vulnerability and self-exposure. Hildur’s entire body of work is a study of the self\, a brutal journey towards self-awareness through shameful moments and thoughts\, while seeking attention and yearning for personal growth. Nonetheless\, she does not wallow in self-pity\, nor is she expecting this from the audience. A certain discomfort or unease -both her own and the viewer’s- is always present\, as she leaves no flaw unexplored. \nThe women in Hildur’s aquarelles are lost\, unstable and on occasion gruesome\, some of them seemingly disintegrating after extensive periods of melancholia. With a vacant stare\, they sometimes accusingly peer out at the viewer. The black creatures or arthropods regularly appear throughout her works\, raising primal sensations of disgust and displeasure\, as they symbolise the artist’s self-perception or what is unwanted and should be discarded. A distorted view of reality and the body image is apparent in several works\, while the candy colours only add to the overall creepiness. Manifesting no concern for unflattering angles or voyeurism\, a naked body is reclined in an oil painting\, its long neck bending in disbelief\, perhaps for the first time seeing the truth. Despite battling feelings of inadequacy shared by many\, Hildur becomes the master of over-sharing\, ignoring expectations regarding one’s physical appearance and socially approved behaviour. On the surface\, it might appear that the search for validation from another is the ultimate goal\, when in truth\, she can only find it within herself.

Með því að leita persónulegrar samþykktar á öllum röngu stöðunum – með einnar nætur kynnum\, skelfilegum stefnumótum og vonlausri rómantík – þá opnast gáttir fyrir sársaukafulla vegi sjálfsfyrirlitningar\, kvíða og þarfar fyrir utanaðkomandi samþykki. Í titli sýningarinnar; Marga hildi háð\, sem skilja má sem svo að hún hafi háð marga bardaga\, er fornafn listamannsins\, Hildar\, og merking nafnsins notað en Hildur þýðir bardagi á íslenskri tungu. Í nútímasamfélagi eru þessir bardagar myndlíkingar og vísa í samhenginu til innri óróa listamannsins\, Hildar. Sjálfsævisöguleg verk hennar samanstanda af málverkum og skúlptúrum. Þau eru viðkvæm og óhefluð og endurspegla gjarnan skömm og eftirsjá. Þrátt fyrir að óttast höfnun umfram allt\, þá kastar Hildur sér hvað eftir annað út í þráhyggjufulla leit að ást og afhjúpar þannig sammannlegt varnarleysi okkar: „Ég endurræsi Instagramið mitt til að sjá hvort þú hafir horft á söguna mína þann daginn. Mér finnst einhvernveginn eins og þú sért nálægt mér þegar þú gerir það. Ef þú gerir það ekki\, þá finnst mér eins og þú hafir einhvernveginn yfirgefið mig.” \nÍ hugdjarfri framsetningu Hildar á kvenlíkamanum má finna líkindi með nektarmálverkum enska myndlistarmannsins Jenny Saville\, sem notar gjarnan sjálfa sig sem fyrirmynd í máluðum portrettum sínum. Auk þess að sýna persónulegan karakter sinn í málverkum þá gefa þær báðar nánast gróteska en þó sanna mynd af veruleika kvenna. Nakinn líkama Saville í mikilli yfirþyngd og einkennilegar líkamsstellingarnar sem Hildur málar sig í má sjá sem uppreisn: Ó\, að konan leyfi sér að sýna sínar óþægilegu og ófögru hliðar. Það sem hér er verið að mótmæla er heildarsaga feðraveldisins\, þeirri linsu sem horft er á kvenlíkamann í gegnum\, þar sem karllægt sjónmálið tekur sér vald yfir því hverskonar líkamar eigi rétt á að vera til og koma fyrir sjónir annarra. \nÞrátt fyrir að nekt sé rauður þráður í gegnum sýninguna\, þá er líkaminn sýndur sem kynlaus eining og nektinni leyft að standa sem myndlíking fyrir varnarleysi og endurspeglun á sjálfinu. Öll listsköpun Hildar er rannsókn á sjálfinu\, ósérhlífin vegferð í gegnum smánarlegar stundir og -hugsanir\, sem leiða til aukinnar sjálfsvitundar\, samhliða löngun eftir athygli og þrá eftir að öðlast meiri persónulegan þroska. Engu að síður veltir hún sér ekki uppúr sjálfsvorkunn\, né ætlast hún til vorkunnar frá áhorfendum. Ákveðin óþægindi eða vanlíðan – bæði hennar eigin og áhorfandans – eru alltaf til staðar\, þar eð hún skilur enga bresti eftir órannsakaða. \nKonurnar í akvarellum Hildar eru týndar\, hvikular og stundum skelfilegar\, og sumar þeirra virðast tærast upp líkt og eftir langvarandi depurðartímabil. Með tómu augnaráði sínu horfa þær stundum ásakandi á áhorfandann. Svartar verur eða liðdýr koma endurtekið fyrir í verkum hennar og vekja upp frumstæðar tilfinningar viðbjóðs og vanþóknunar\, þar sem verurnar tákna sjálfsskynjun listamannsins eða það sem er óæskilegt og ætti að eyða. Bjöguð sýn á veruleikann og ímynd líkamans birtist í nokkrum af verkunum á meðan pastel-nammilitirnir auka á hryllinginn. Nakinn líkami olíumálverksins sýnir engar áhyggjur af óaðlaðandi sjónarhornum eða gægjuþörf sem gæti skapast\, heldur hallar sér aftur\, langur hálsinn beygir sig líkt og af vantrú\, kannski skynjar hann sannleikann í fyrsta sinn. Í öðru verki er geislavirkt óargardýr að forða sér út úr ramma myndarinnar\, dýr sem skammast sín fyrir að vera þar en er ófært um að bægja hinum mörgu augum sínum frá áhorfandanum. \n“Hvern þeirra ertu að tala um?” \n„Þann sem ég hef verið skotinn í í tvö ár en sem elskar mig ekki til baka.“ \nFrásögnin í sýningunni Marga hildi háð nær út fyrir sögu af sorgmæddri stúlku í ástarsorg\, þar sem hún snertir á þemum er sveiflast frá fjarstæðukenndum sögum af stefnumótamenningu samtímans\, til frásagna af vanvirkum samböndum og geðheilbrigði. DESCRIPTION:i8 Gallery is pleased to announce Peace\, an exhibition of new work by Hildigunnur Birgisdóttir. The show\, Birgisdóttir’s second with the gallery\, includes installations\, prints\, and sculptures by the artist. A major new publication highlighting ten years of Birgisdóttir’s work will be released to coincide with the opening of the show. \n  \nThroughout her nuanced practice\, Birgisdóttir explores ideas of beauty\, utility\, and context\, continually questioning the balance between perception and reality. For Peace\, Birgisdóttir presents five bodies of work\, including both singular objects and connected installations. This exhibition examines banal items such as computer buttons\, plastic clips\, and textile sprays\, each of which is considered by the artist for its simplicity and sheer existence. By presenting prosaic objects in new mediums and scales\, Birgisdóttir overemphasizes their familiarity\, while also challenging their functionality. These shifts highlight the sculptural value of the original item and celebrate the aesthetics of objects that are normally overlooked. \n  \nHildigunnur Birgisdóttir (born 1980\, Iceland) lives and works in Reykjavík. In 2021\, she was included in shows at Iceland’s Reykjavik Art Museum; the GES-2 House of Culture\, V-A-C Foundation in Moscow\, Russia; and H2H in Athens\, Greece. Her work is included in the collections of the National Gallery of Iceland\, the Reykjavík Art Museum\, and Iceland’s Living Art Museum\, among others. Birgisdóttir graduated from the Iceland Academy of the Arts in 2003.

Mǫrsugur is the darkest time of the year when all living breath lies in hibernation. To brighten up those dark weeks four artists will project their works on the window of Gallerí úthverfa / Outvert Art Space in the center of Ísafjörður. He studied fine arts at Lucerne University of Applied Science and Arts and did his postgraduate studies at the Iceland University of the Arts\, graduating in 2018. His artistic practice gravitates around concepts referring to cultural development and their performative aspect of meaning creation process. \nThe disconnection of metaphoric meaning and the creation of reason through dynamic conjunction rather than connections can be seen as an overall motive in his research.

Listræn iðkun hans snýst um hugtök sem tengjast menningarþróun og gjörningaþætti merkingarsköpunar. Það má líta þannig á að meginmarkmið rannsókna hans sé að aðskilja myndlíkingalega merkingu og skapa skynsemi með kraftmiklum samtengingum frekar en tengingum. \nI had cake for breakfast er vídjó gjörningur tekinn upp á svölum Listasafns Akureyrar og sýnir óskynsamlega tilraun til að borða hrúgu af snjó.
