SUMMARY:Nadine Baldow: A Pleasure to be Alive
DESCRIPTION:The works in this show are dedicated to my dear friend Josefine Lehner\, who was moved by the Icelandic Landscape deeply.\nNadine Baldow’s practice is informed by the current geological era\, known as the Anthropocene\, where traces of human activity are embedded within planet earth. Are we still part of nature? Did estrangement from nature start with a fence? Did the first artificial boundary create a gap between man and nature?\nSince 2020\, Baldow’s site-specific sculptures are informed by the ongoing series of Landscape Investigations – TOPOPHILIA\, starting in the NorthWest of rural Ireland. Until now\, she investigated the rural\, but culturally impacted landscapes of Ireland\, Slovenia\, Lithuania\, and Iceland.\n“A PLEASURE TO BE ALIVE focuses on the bodily experience of being in landscape – with its pleasures and its harshness alike. The last three months\, I concentrated on repetitive rituals to be fully present in my body and in the environment. Besides the act of walking the land and exposing myself to every weather this Island has to offer – I meditated on natural phenomena in landscape and delved into rituals with hot and icy water.\nAll landscapes\, I’ve investigated so far – despite their beauty – carry a heavy human handprint. Iceland is no exception with its treeless land and the effects of livestock grazing\,but the power of nature is highly present in this geologically young landmass. During the process of walking the land and observing the challenging condition this young place creates\, I felt drawn to the presence of mortality in this landscape. My own existence\, my body feeling the land\, stands in contradiction to these materials\, such as bones\, sculls and horns. The remains of these dead beings indicate how these animals died – while some died of natural causes\, others found their death through direct human force.\nA PLEASURE TO BE ALIVE is a conglomerate of materials found in the volcanic landscapes of Iceland that tell stories about their pain and joy of existence.” Iceland\, April 2023\n\nBIO\nNadine Baldow (b. 1990\, Dresden\, Germany) is a visual artist based in Berlin whose work predominately addresses the complex relationship between “culture” and “nature” and their ongoing impact on each other.\nThe scenarios she builds through her site-specific sculptures and installations could be considered as philosophical thought experiments dealing with ecological issues. In addition to her sculptural practice\, the artist exposes herself to various situation of friction to explore her own relationship with nature\, such as shepherding a freely flock or living in a lonely hut in the woods.\nNadine Baldow studied with professor Eberhard Bosslet\, at the Academy of Fine Arts in Dresden after completing a woodcarving apprenticeship in the Alps – she completed her studies as “Meisterschüler”.\nShe has been scholarship holder of the artist-in-residence-program in the Himalayas in India (KYTA Foundation)\, Iceland (SIM)\, at Gozo Contemporary in Malta (the META Foundation)\, the National Park Sumava in Czech\, Leitrim Sculpture Centre (ArtsCouncil Ireland)\, the nature conservation island Vilm in Germany (German Federal Agency for Nature\, BfN)\, Urban Nation – museum for urban contemporary art in Berlin (Stiftung Berliner Leben)\, Halle 14 – the Center for Contemporary Arts in Leipzig\, Stiftung Künstlerdorf Schöppingen and in Seoul\, South Korea in cooperation with the Hansung University.

SUMMARY:Solander 250: bréf frá Íslandi
DESCRIPTION:Sýningin Solander 250: bréf frá Íslandi er stærsta og viðamesta myndlistasýning sem hefur ferðast um landið en hún mun teygja anga sína um tólf listasöfn og sýningarsali um allt land frá haustinu 2022 og enda í Svíþjóð 2024.

SUMMARY:Guðrún Einarsdóttir: Málverk
DESCRIPTION:Á sýningunni Málverk birtir Guðrún Einarsdóttir verk þar sem lífræn form\, efniskennd og áferð eru allsráðandi.

SUMMARY:Guðrún Einarsdóttir: Paintings
DESCRIPTION:Guðrún Einarsdóttir´s exhibition Paintings calls upon the natural elements of Iceland\, presenting meditative and impactful works that examine materiality\, physicality\, and organic forms.\n\nThroughout her career\, Guðrún has studied the properties of oil paint\, developing a breadth of textures that have come to characterize her work. What results is a unique visual world that references forms of nature\, a sort of material landscape on canvas\, as the artist puts it. As Guðrún paints\, the works lie flat over periods of months and sometimes years. Her way of working is in a way scientific and methodical\, yet also inherently instinctive. Guðrún places full trust in the process\, organic and dependent on the elements\, unique and unexpected. In Guðrún´s paintings we feel distinctly the presence of nature. As if they have grown within and through the canvas\, the viewer appears to witness a natural formation\, one that is actively growing and shifting as we regard them.

SUMMARY:VOR/WIOSNA festival
DESCRIPTION:In April 2023 we will celebrate our fourth edition of VOR/WIOSNA festival and this year we dedicate the theme to Design; a variety of design practices from ceramics\, fashion to product and food design. In the exhibition we will present not only creations from Iceland based artists born in Poland but also two designers of Polish origins coming from Norway. Works will be presenting different perceptions of what design is; it can be a performative dinner or an artistic research dedicated to a cleansing ritual or a magnificent vase in which the material\, its form and the work done on it\, is the core of the piece. \nStrong connection to the environment is the “axis mundi” of the show. Water and soil\, herbs and trees\, researching the materials and visiting the origins of the design itself is echoing in each project and the projects that we present resonate with each other to create a harmonic show. \nWithin this year’s edition we will also give a nod to music; a concert with the Polish band Polski Piach as well as an performance by our artist in residency Krzysztof “Arszyn” Topolski. Both events are a part of ACT_IN_OUT a two years art project dedicated to music and theatre that Slaturhusid is a part of along with Fabryka Sztuki Łódź\, Carte Blache and Theater de Visjoner from Norway. Krzysztof will also collaborate with jazz guitars\, and art director of Far out / Langt út jazzseries in Slaturhusid\, Edgars Rugajs and together they will perform in a concert on the 26th of April. \nLast but not least Vor will also host workshop for kids from upcycling and a showcase of short animation movies curated by Ex Anima Foundation.

SUMMARY:Hugo Llanes: And When The Sun Rises\, I Look at The Sun
DESCRIPTION:With ‘When The Sun Rises\, I Look at The Sun’\, Hugo Llanes proposes to reframe domestication\, exploitation\, and the introduction of certain crops as an example of socio-political events\, namely the arrival of the Spanish to the Americas\, and the evolution of the agricultural industries built in the Latin American context.\nFocusing on land and cultural motifs\, with the sugar industry of the Veracruz region of Mexico—the artist’s place of origin—as reference\, Llanes depicts the relationship between the semi-rural labourer\, industrialisation of the land and the traditions that might emerge from it. Here\, Llanes makes the twin gestures of painting with ashes from a sugarcane field\, and burning the canvas in order to build a composed installation consisting of fired wheat\, cotton\, cane and stainless steel.\nThese gestures seek to catalyse a conversation about the complexities of living in a contemporary world sustained by extractivist practices\, immoderate consumption and crops that are the foundation of capitalist trade policies.\n\n Hugo Llanes is an artist based in Iceland. He has a BA from Universidad Veracruzana and holds a MA in Fine Arts from the Iceland University of the Arts. His work involves the study of social-political cracks and aesthetics that erupt from them. Llanes looks at social circumstances\, such as food migration\, the abuse of power\, economic disparity and the food supply chain. To depict these\, he employs artistic research and mediums such as maintenance art\, performance\, installation\, site-specific\, participatory art\, video art\, and extended painting. He believes that the personal is a microsystem that is exposed to a global sphere. \nOpening times will be 14-17hrs.\nAs well as by appointment.

SUMMARY:Hugo Llanes: And When The Sun Rises\, I Look at The Sun
DESCRIPTION:Með „And When The Sun Rises\, I Look at The Sun“ (og þegar sólin rís lít ég til sólar) leggur Hugo Llanes til að endurskipuleggja búskap\, arðrán og innflutning ákveðins landbúnaðar sem dæmi um félags-pólitíska atburði\, svo sem komu Spánverja til Ameríku\, og þróun landbúnaðariðnaðarins í Rómönsku-Amerísku samhengi.\nMeð áherslu á jörð og menningarleg mótíf\, og sykuriðnað Veracruz-héraðsins í Mexíkó – upprunastað listamannsins – til viðmiðunar\, dregur Llanes upp mynd af samspili hálf-sveitaverkamanns\, iðnvæðingu landsins og hefðanna sem af þeim kunna að spretta. Hér mótar Llanes í tvíþættri athöfn\, þar sem hann málar með ösku sykurreyrsviðar á striga sem hann svo svíður\, samsetta innsetningu af brenndu hveiti\, bómull\, reyr og ryðfríu stáli.\nListamaðurinn leitast þannig við að hvetja til samtals um flækjustig þess að hrærast í samtímaveröld sem viðhaldið er af útdráttarhyggju\, óhóflegri neyslu og jarðargróða sem er undirstaða kapítalískrar viðskiptastefnu.\n\n Hugo Llanes er listamaður með aðsetur á Íslandi. Hann er með BA frá Universidad Veracruzana og MA í myndlist frá Listaháskóla Íslands. Verk hans fela í sér rannsókn á félagspólitískum sprungum og fagurfræði sem brýst út úr þeim. Llanes skoðar félagslegar aðstæður\, svo sem matvælaflutninga\, misbeitingu valds\, efnahagslega misskiptingu og fæðuframboðskeðjuna. Til að lýsa þessu notast hann við listrænar rannsóknir og miðla svo sem viðhaldslist\, gjörninga\, innsetningar\, staðbundna list\, þátttökulist\, myndbandalist og víðtæka málaralist. Hann telur að hið persónulega sé örkerfi sem verður fyrir hnattrænu sviði.\n\n\nOpið 14-17.\nOg eftir samkomulagi.

SUMMARY:Kristinn E. Hrafnsson: all is nigh
DESCRIPTION:The exhibition text\, written by the Icelandic writer and poet Sigmundur Ernir Rúnarsson\, contains the following passages: “Time passes. This is knowledge we have. And probably conviction. Perhaps\, it’s the least we can expect. From our giggling youth\, it comes and goes. Rather fumbling. And therein lies a certain security. Because time can’t pass differently. It comes and it goes\, unhesitating\, resolute. Like a straight line. Clear. As it is\, in its nature. From one time to another. East to west. And we\, the human race\, are somehow squeezed in between these time-consuming directions. […]” \n“The artist Kristinn E. Hrafnsson is preoccupied with time. This is not a recent development. And also nearness\, as tangible as it is for earth’s rotation on its axis\, from west to east. Where the large and the small teeters\, along with the straight and the rounded. But there is the art\, Kristinn’s art\, but also only his stance and his attitude\, because somehow we wake up – and then we fall asleep in a different manner. That’s the framework. Everything happens there\, outside and inside\, in differently written lines and curves.” \nKristinn E. Hrafnsson (1960) studied art in Iceland and Germany in the years 1982-1990. He has mostly worked as a sculptor\, although he has also worked in other mediums\, e.g. photographs and prints on paper\, and his text works are known to many. Kristinn has held dozens of solo exhibitions\, participated in a large number of group exhibitions and has works in most public museums in the country. He has various works of art in public places around Iceland.

SUMMARY:Kristinn E. Hrafnsson: allt er nálægt
DESCRIPTION:Í sýningartexta Sigmundar Ernis Rúnarssonar\, sem hann nefnir Tími og fjarlægð\, segir: „Tíminn líður.

SUMMARY:Loungæ
DESCRIPTION:At the exhibition Loungæ\, Hlökk Þrastardóttir and Sindri Leifsson envisions the term “lounge” as sitting rooms\, especially in hotels or offices\, but also in the sense of lounging around or hanging out.\nThey draw inspiration from the world of ideas of the Stone Age and compare it to the modern world and the reality we live with today. The percussion harnessed them into sculptures made of clay\, wood\, steel and yellow peppers\, and the works will be activated through performances and the participation of visitors. \n\n\nThe exhibition runs until April 29 and there will be a finale that will be announced later.

SUMMARY:Loungæ
DESCRIPTION:Á sýningunni Loungæ velta þau Hlökk Þrastardóttir og Sindri Leifsson fyrir sér hugtakinu „lounge“ sem setustofum\, sér í lagi á hótelum eða á skrifstofum en einnig í merkingunni að slæpast um eða hanga.\nÞau sækja innblástur í hugmyndaheim steinaldarinnar og berja honum upp við nútímann og þann veruleika sem við lifum við í dag.

SUMMARY:Land Mermaids
DESCRIPTION:“Land Mermaids” (2023)\nby Julie Sjöfn Gasiglia & Martina Priehodová\n“As the sea covers the last bit of land left\, the land mermaids have no choice but to return to where they came from\, leaving behind nothing but their empty carapace.\nJulie Sjöfn Gasiglia & Martina Priehodová started collaborating in 2022\, after discovering their shared connection to watery beings and minerals. Julie’s drawings of melancholic chunks of landscape\, sparked an idea of collaboration and things started rapidly evolving after Martina made a sculpture\, an eerie ecosystem scanner\, referencing one of the drawings.\nTying their flow together\, Land Mermaids were born.\n// New-age trolls calcified into rocks…\n…they were too melancholic and forgot to hide before sunrise. //\nManifesting their tangible existence and celebrating their brutal beauty\, Land Mermaids Relics are to be seen at Svigrúm.
