SUMMARY:Bathing Culture
DESCRIPTION:The outdoor\, geothermal pool is the most interesting public sphere in Iceland. A place where strangers cross paths and acquaintances meet; it serves a purpose similar to the plaza in warmer climes\, the pub in England or the café in France.\nIt is a source of wellbeing and part of everyday life. \nThe exhibition traces the development of public pools in Iceland from the late 19th century when the focus was on learning\, hygiene and physical education\, illustrates how play later became a key element\, and finally to the present when pleasure is the ultimate goal of a spa-like experience. \nArchitects\, graphic designers\, product designers\, fashion designers and experience designers have taken part in shaping this story in consort with the public\, the pools staff\, and the munincipalities. It is an example of social design at its best.

SUMMARY:Sund
DESCRIPTION:Það eru engir viðskiptavinir í sundlaugum landsins\, aðeins sundlaugagestir: almenningur á hverjum stað fyrir sig\, fólk á öllum aldri með alls konar bakgrunn\, alls konar holningu og alls konar sýn á lífið.
DESCRIPTION:The exhibition Embrace focuses on the internal logic of the painterly acts that are situated\, committed and embedded. It is an exhibition in which all parts come together with the aim of creating and generating sites and situations for paintings to not only be but to become – to breath in\, and to breath out\, with the viewers and the site. \nThe aim is to get away from the idea of distanced neutrality and start moving towards participatory analog experience – the demanding but pleasurable road from detachment to proximity\, from absence to engagement. \nThis exhibition will ask you to join in. SUMMARY:Birgir Andrésson: As Far as the Eye Can See
DESCRIPTION:As Far as the Eye Can See is a varied and extensive overview exhibition of the works of visual artist Birgir Andrésson (1955-2007) that takes over Kjarvalsstaðir. \nBirgir Andrésson was a leading force in Icelandic art for more than thirty years\, and died long before his time. Birgir searched the well of Icelandic culture\, stories\, traditions and the nation’s handwork for inspiration. He drew elements from these sources and presented them in a uniquely informed way in works that secured his place in Icelandic art history and drew admiration from the international art scene. This exhibition gives insight into the artist’s influential career and connects his works not only to the local art scene\, but to  contemporary art internationally. More than a hundred works are displayed\, including those from the collection at Reykjavík Art Museum\, The National Gallery of Iceland\, The Living Art Museum and The Metropolitan Museum in New York\, and from private collections. The exhibition is curated by Art Historian Dr. Robert Hobbs. Parallel to the exhibition\, In Icelandic Colour\, a newly-published book in English that explores Birgir Andrésson’s life’s work and includes an essay by Hobbs will be released. \nBirgir Andrésson studied art at the School of Arts and Crafts from 1973 to 1977 and then went on to study art at the Jan van Eyck Academy in Maastricht in the Netherlands from 1978 to 1979. Birgir was selected as the Icelandic representative in the Venice Biennale in 1995. His works have been exhibited in prestigious exhibitions both in Iceland and abroad\, and are in public and private museums around the world. One of his works was recently added to the Metropolitan Museum’s collection in New York. \nFrom curator Robert Hobbs: \nIn 2005\, conceptual artist Birgir Andrésson (1955-2007) wrote “I see myself as conceived in ‘blindness.’” While he appears to be referencing his blind parents and childhood in the Reykjavík Blind People’s Home\, the single quotation marks around the word ‘blindness’ and his later observation\, “it is pure luck … just to be a part of this rigmarole\,” point to the distinct artistic perspective this exceptional upbringing provided. \nIn 1989\, Birgir adopted the concept nearness for his work. The word refers to the mid-twentieth-century theory proposed by German philosopher Martin Heidegger (1889-1976)\, and Birgir may have first encountered it in the late 1970s as a student in the Netherlands\, then a hotbed of conceptual art. For Heidegger\, nearness is a paradox; it affirms one’s inability to comprehend life’s ultimate mysteries\, based on the idea that the closer one gets to such truths\, the more one becomes aware of their distance. However\, Birgir’s nearness is political rather than philosophical: it sets up ongoing tensions between international cutting-edge artistic forms and traditional Icelandic subjects. Although the title of his mural As Far as the Eye Can See suggests limitless views\, thus undermining nearness’s distinct perspective\, Birgir’s art views perception in terms of vision and ideology: both approaches are potentially expansive\, but sometimes they can be limiting\, and this difference is key to his work. \nBirgir’s conceptual art relies on the strategies of language\, photography\, archival research\, and reframing to celebrate\, critique\, and question Icelandic cultural traditions with dry humor. Particularly noteworthy is his great respect for his viewers\, evident in his art’s shifts between the expected and the unanticipated as well as the near and the far\, so that Icelanders and others are invited to reflect on themselves and their traditions in a global world. Works in this exhibition include Icelandic postage stamps from 1930 designed by a German working in Austria; blown-up photographs of nineteenth- and early-twentieth-century vagabonds as well as detailed text portraits of Icelandic individuals\, who differ from saga heroes. This retrospective also includes floor plans of indigenous turf houses transformed into hieroglyphs for a new type of concrete poetry; woollen national flags knitted in the natural hues of the island’s sheep; and paints touted as “Icelandic” even as they employ internationally adopted American Pantone and Swedish NCS color-matching systems. In addition\, Birgir’s series comprise foreign plants grown in Ora food cans; local houses and buildings named for cities\, countries\, and regions around the world; and a medley of Icelandic greys composed by an outsider\, the respected Victorian English artist\, poet\, and designer William Morris. Altogether\, one can appreciate Birgir Andrésson’s impressive range\, which is predicated on national/global oppositions\, as a response to Halldór Laxness’s 1934-35 novel Independent People. Similar to this extraordinary epic\, Birgir’s art looks afresh and with assured irony at aspects of Icelandic culture and finds them truly remarkable. \nMany of Birgir’s peers have recalled his “gentle humor” and “warm irony.” His former student\, the internationally acclaimed artist Ragnar Kjartansson has spoken of Birgir’s “deep\, deep love of humanity coupled with a sense of people.buy fluoxetine online https://gaetzpharmacy.com/fluoxetine.html no prescription\n” His close friend\, the legendary American conceptual artist Lawrence Weiner\, has recalled always looking forward to seeing Birgir and remembers him as not just a maker of objects but an artist well versed in theory\, who was constantly questioning others as well as himself. During his lifetime\, he was featured in numerous solo and group shows in Iceland and Europe. Four years after his 1991 solo show at the Reykjavík Art Museum\, Birgir was selected to represent Iceland at the Venice Biennale. In 2000\, the National Gallery of Iceland featured his pieces in a solo exhibition; and then in 2006\, this same institution organized a retrospective of his work. In 2011\, the literary critic and editor Þröstur Helgason wrote a monograph on Birgir’s work in which he chronicles many of his intriguing and insightful stories. More recently\, in 2017\, New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art acquired Birgir’s 2004 mural Eins langt og augað eygir (As Far as the Eye Can See) when bolstering its collection of recent international art\, and this work’s title serves as the subtitle for the present retrospective of his work. \nRobert Hobbs\, PhD

SUMMARY:Birgir Andrésson: Eins langt og augað eygir
DESCRIPTION:Eins langt og augað eygir er fjölbreytt og umfangsmikil yfirlitssýning á verkum myndlistarmannsins Birgis Andréssonar (1955-2007) sem tekur yfir nær alla Kjarvalsstaði. Sýnd eru yfiir eitthundrað verk sem koma meðal annars úr safneign Listasafns Reykjavíkur\, Listasafns Íslands\, Nýlistasafnsins og Metropolitan safnsins í New York en einnig frá innlendum og erlendum einkasöfnurum. Sýningarstjóri er bandaríski listfræðingurinn Robert Hobbs. Samtímis sýningunni kemur út bók á ensku um ævistarf Birgis Andréssonar\, In Icelandic Colour\, en þar verður að finna ritgerð eftir Hobbs með sama nafni. Nýlega bættist verk eftir hann í safneign Metropolitan safnsins í New York. \nDr. Robert Hobbs \n

SUMMARY:Ásdís Sif Gunnarsdóttir: Conversation to the Self
DESCRIPTION:No conversation can take place without some kind of presence. And no conversation can take place without will or risk\, without stepping into unknown situations\, new perspectives and ambiguous feelings. Conversation to the Selfis a meeting place. A platform where video works\, photographs and performances; moments from different times in Ásdís Sif Gunnarsdóttir’s career intertwine into a complex whole. Archetypes from the future appear in times of crisis\, buried memories surface and vibrant stories break through darkness and crawl under the skin. The dreamy\, almost surreal flash that characterises Ásdís’ work takes over and invites us in. \nÁsdís’ works explore the intersection of magical realism and the wonders of nature through distortion\, transformation and ritual. They have a hint of poetic and impending turmoil. The works combine poetry and images\, private and public space\, technology and nature\, uncertainty and carefree. They all deal in their own way with what is reflected in the moment\, rather than what is actually in front of our eyes\, and appear to us in multifaceted videos\, live streamings\, interactivity and documentation in the form of texts and photography. Ásdís uses new media and technology to reflect the uniqueness of humanity: the soul and the memory that appears to us as a fragment\, rather than a whole. Her work is thus undeniably reminiscent of some kind of a machine that splits time and pieces it back together. \nÁsdís Sif Gunnarsdóttir (b. 1976) lives and works in Reykjavík. She graduated with a BFA from the School of Visual Arts in New York in 2000 and an MA from the University of California\, Los Angeles\, in 2004 with a focus on video and performance arts. Since the beginning of her career\, Ásdís Sif has exhibited in both solo and group exhibitions in Iceland and internationally\, including the Akureyri Art Museum\, Hverfisgallerí\, Reykjavík Art Museum\, Centre Pompidou (Paris\, France) and the Tate Gallery (London\, UK).

SUMMARY:Jóhannes S. Kjarval: In Icelandic Colours
DESCRIPTION:The exhibition seeks to cast a light on colour in the works of Jóhannes Kjarval (1885-1972) and explore his use of colour. He used diverse colours in his work – weather and light determined his choice of colour in his landscapes\, and in fantasies and other works the artist’s personal feeling and vision was in charge. Sharp colours\, purple\, pink and gold are among those you find in many of Kjarval’s works. He either laid the paint on really thin or squeezed thick paint directly from the tube onto the canvas. In this exhibition\, the works are selected to reflect Kjarval’s liberal use of colour and the flow of ideas and expression in his art. \nWhen Kjarval was growing up and experimenting\, he used calf blood\, soot\, ink and wool dye when he couldn’t get his hands on other things or paint. During his study years\, first in Reykjavík and later in Denmark\, and as he travelled and saw more of international art\, his use of colour changed and developed. \nIn an article that Hörður Ágústsson wrote in Þjóðviljinn newspaper in 1954\, he discusses Kjarval’s colours and says he was a natural “colourist”. “He entices the subtle nuances of the ribbon of colour\, connecting them to the rough landscape\, the delicately grey moss\, blue-black lava\, eroded brown earth. At the same time\, his colour is tied to an ageless myth\, the life of the country and the people.” (Þjóðviljinn\, 10 October 1954) \nThe exhibition bears the title In Icelandic Colours and is dedicated to artist Birgir Andrésson (1955-2007) who in his career created numerous works in colours that he defined as Icelandic and tagged them with a colour code and the word “Icelandic” in front. The colours defined by Birgir were those he thought common in the nation’s visual heritage. \nThis is an exploration of Kjarval’s works based on the Icelandic colours but the works are diverse\, displaying the artist’s expression and the richness he imbued his artworks with. Kjarval examined the colours and hues in Icelandic nature and thought of nature itself as a palette. In November 1950\, an article by him appeared in Líf og list magazine\, entitled “The Icelandic Palette”. The article is an encouragement to Icelandic artists to work together developing and cataloguing “the Icelandic palette” and the colourfulness of Icelandic nature. \nDuring the 1960s\, Kjarval started using palettes as subjects and often displayed them in nature\, interwoven with lava and moss\, thus emphasising the unbreakable bonds between colours and nature. Up until this time\, he had painted various landscapes that he named “Palette”. Kjarval’s last work\, which stood on the easel in his studio when he was hospitalised in 1968\, was of an empty palette. He didn’t paint anything after that. \nKjarval is one of the nation’s most beloved artists and his diverse oeuvre has numerous paintings of Icelandic nature\, fantastic creatures and the Icelandic people. In 1968\, he donated a large part of his artworks and personal items to the city of Reykjavík and his work has been displayed in various fashion since the opening of Kjarvalsstaðir in 1973. The works in the exhibition belong to the Reykjavík Art Museum’s collection.

SUMMARY:Jóhannes S. Kjarval: Í íslenskum litum
DESCRIPTION:Á sýningunni er  leitast við að varpa ljósi á litinn í verkum Jóhannesar Kjarvals (1885-1972) og kanna hvernig litanotkun hans var háttað.

SUMMARY:Alicja Kwade: In Relation to the Sun\,
DESCRIPTION:We are pleased to announce the opening of i8 Grandi\, a new gallery in Reykjavík that focuses on year-long\, single-artist presentations. The inaugural year of i8 Grandi features In Relation to the Sun\, an exhibition by Alicja Kwade (b. 1979\, Katowice\, Poland\, lives and works in Berlin\, Germany). The artist’s show\, which includes installation\, sculpture\, and work on paper\, is now open and will be on view until 22 December 2022.\n\n\nSpanning far longer than traditional museum or gallery shows\, i8 Grandi represents a new model for exhibitions. The programming focuses on concepts of space and time\, and the presentations will evolve while on view. The annual format allows artists to consider how time affects their work\, and the fluidity encourages audiences to revisit the changing installations.\n\n\n\nThroughout her presentation\, Kwade will reconfigure artworks within the space\, at times expanding\, condensing\, or adapting the works on view. Reflecting the evolution within the exhibition\, Kwade’s show title will continue to change as well.\n\n\n\n\ni8 Grandi is the gallery’s second location in Reykjavík. Extending over two floors and 170 square metres\, the new gallery is located in the Marshall House\, a cultural centre in a historic factory building in Reykjavík’s Grandi harbour district. i8 joins the Living Art Museum\, Kling & Bang\, and artist Ólafur Elíasson’s private studio in the Marshall House\, along with La Primavera Restaurant on the ground floor.\n\n\n\n\ni8’s existing gallery at Tryggvagata 16 will continue its regular programming; the two locations are a fifteen minute walk apart across the harbour. i8 Grandi will be open Wednesday to Sunday from 12am – 6pm\, as well as by appointment.

Ljósin minna á diskótek áttunda áratugarins þegar það sem átti að sjást gerði það ekki\, en annað sem maður hélt að væri hulið\, varð skyndilega að aðalatriði. Þannig snýst sýningin m.a. um gleði þess að allt er að breystast fyrir augum manns. SUMMARY:Marinó Thorlacius: Straumnes

SUMMARY:Marino Thorlacius: Straumnes
DESCRIPTION:Straumnesfjall mountain rises between Aðalvík to the south and Rekavík to the north\, now within Hornstrandir Nature Reserve in the Westfjords. During the cold war the US army erected a radar station on the mountain\, which it operated for only three years\, between 1958 and 1961. In 1991 the mountain and its surroundings were cleared of the ruins in a cooperation between the US army and Icelandic authorities. Nonetheless\, clear traces of this operation are still visible on the mountain. \nThe photographer Marino Thorlacius photographed the area in 2015 and again in 2019 and shares his vision of what remains of the radar station at this remote place. The sublime natural beauty and the ever-changing weather offer a backdrop to the photographs depicting relics of bygone times. When the lingering fog lifts and light clears the view over the level mountain top\, concrete blocks lying around catch the eye. Debris of timber and iron that lies half buried at the edge of the mountain bears witness to a story of the station being bulldozed over the edge. Do these scattered remains denote a pollution disaster\, or are they cultural heritage? \n\n\nBuilding and operating a radar station in this secluded location was indeed a daunting effort and the army soon gave up. The surging ocean\, 400 meters below the mountain edge\, provides an audio track of the limitations set by nature to the place and the people who dwelled there.buy zithromax online healthcoachmichelle.com/wp-content/themes/twentytwentyone/inc/en/zithromax.html no prescription\n The human is vulnerable facing the forces of nature at Straumnesfjall mountain. \nMarino Thorlacius first exhibited his photographs in 2004 and has since then worked as a professional photographer that focuses equally on art projects and commercial photography.buy tadalista online healthcoachmichelle.com/wp-content/themes/twentytwentyone/inc/en/tadalista.html no prescription\n He often collaborates closely with artists and designers in shaping the visual world of the projects. SUMMARY:Hallgerður Hallgrímsdóttir: Thoughts on Photography – Vol. III
DESCRIPTION:Taking a photograph can seem so simple – just the push of a button – almost an objet trouvé\, a recording of photons meeting molecules. It is mysterious and emotional\, with aesthetics and instincts coming to play\, but also decidedly rooted in the scientific. The artist thinks about how people see\, in connection with the medium of photography – how three dimensional spaces\, things and fleeting moments are interpreted through this two dimensional\, static medium. The works are made with human spatial vision in mind\, as well as the machines we have created to see and document the visual world in a way we understand. Mostly. \nHallgerður Hallgrímsdóttir‘s practice is for the most part based in photography. The show’s title (which in English approximately translates as ‘here and now’)\, chosen by FÍSL\, gave the impetus for my own selection of Finnish photographers\, and the final selection of specific works from the Icelandic participants. Following a period of intense isolation and closure due to the global pandemic\, Hérna brings together artists from two similar yet very different countries to share in a consideration of what it means to be present\, here and now. This undertaking could be considered\nimportant not only due to the estrangement we have felt from our surroundings during successive lockdowns but also due to the general detachment from our present time and space that we collectively and individually experience. Due to what Baudrillard would term ‘hyper realisation’ we rarely find ourselves in the presence of unmodified nature\, but instead exist within a mind of hall of mirrors reflecting facsimiles of reality. \nThe history of the world can be seen as the history of humankind’s separation from nature in incremental stages from the earliest tool wielding and fire taming efforts\, up to industrialisation and now the internet era. With increasing speed we experience a growing estrangement from nature and the real. In Iceland and Nordic countries we keep a closer link to nature than in many other territories\, due to low population density.buy amoxicillin UK https://www.calmandgentledentalcare.co.uk/wp-content/languages/new/uk/amoxicillin.html no prescription\n However\, the high quality of internet access has an atomising effect on people already used to insular ways of living due to the extreme cold conditions and darkness in winter. As with anywhere\, the contradiction of hyperconnectivity is that it tends to keep people separated from each other and from the natural world. Even palliative nature walks are punctuated by smartphone notifications and when (rarely) our devices are turned off our minds tend to wander to social media interfaces. \nIt is in these conditions that we emerge into a post covid world (the ‘new normal’) with a renewed intensity in our sense of questioning over how we got ‘here and now’. Or indeed\, we might ask\, ‘where is here?\,’ and\, ‘when is now?’. The photographs on display in Hérna capture individually and collectively the photographic quest to express a moment\, though have been selected beyond this for their particular engagement with the nowness of our time and the way in which they locate the viewer in a vision of what Hérna might mean. From the transcendental quality of Anni Kinnunen’s Vanity\, to the ethereal nightscapes of Bjargey Ólafsdóttir\, to the cut up spaces of Charlotta Hauksdóttir’s photographic collage works\, the attempt to locate ourselves in space is expressed with a unique personal voice. The photographs on display above all give voice to one of the main problems of our time—namely\, that with smartphones\, GPRS tracking and google maps we know where we are\, we just can’t feel ourselves being there. As Skúta Helgasson’s lockdown selfies\, and the lonely figures of Janne Körkkö’s Night river series attest\, the awareness of our being in time and space (so essential to our wellbeing) require our coexistence within a community. Rebuilding that community starts here and now. —Mike Watson

SUMMARY:Kristín Sigurðardóttir & Jim Ramer : Transit
DESCRIPTION:Transit brings together the work of Kristin Sigurdardottir and Jim Ramer. Their works are derived from literally polar opposite worlds yet share a quest to see and understand unseen worlds. Sigurdardottir lives and works in Iceland while Ramer’s works were taken from the thermal fields of New Zealand. Exploring worlds past and present\, both primal and peripheral\, they seek fundamental and essential spaces of vision. Situating at the perimetrical boundaries of sight their works provide us with visions of unseen clarity. \nJim Ramer is an artist\, curator and educator. Born in the American South\, he has lived and worked in New York City since 1997. His work considers the nature of vision and perception. The work questions photography’s role in shaping our view of the world and the world’s perception of each of us. His artwork spans photography\, video\, sculpture\, and installation. His work has been exhibited internationally most recently at Selasar Sunaryo Art Space\, Bandung\, Indonesia; Platform L\, Seoul\, South Korea; Main Window\, NYC; MCA\, Memphis\, TN; Incheon International Photography Festival\, Incheon\, South Korea; The Pelham Art Center\, NY; Filter Space\, Chicago; Pingyao International Photography Festival; Denver Month of Photography\, CO among others. As a curator he has recently curated exhibitions in China\, South Korea\, New Zealand\, Australia\, India as well as New York City.
