SUMMARY:Dieter Roth: Jewellery
DESCRIPTION:Dieter Roth (1930—1998) was a pioneer who respected no boundaries: a thinker\, trailblazer\, poet\, musician\, filmmaker and visual artist. A less well-known aspect of his career is that he also made an impression with his creation of innovative jewellery\, starting in Iceland in the late 1950s. \nThe first pieces of jewellery designed by Roth were made in collaboration with his wife\, artist Sigríður Björnsdóttir\, at the kitchen table in their home; but before long they were offered better facilities in the atelier of goldsmith Halldór Sigurðsson at Skólavörðustígur 2 in central Reykjavik \nRoth‘s jewellery\, generally composed of screws\, bolts and other mechanical parts\, could be assembled in various different ways\, and reconfigured. His jewellery-making was characterised by the same approach as his art: he made use of materials that were generally dismissed as waste or refuse\, which he transformed. \nNo two objects are alike; Dieter Roth was familiar with the qualities of the material\, and worked directly with it. In the 1960s Roth embarked on collaboration with Swiss goldsmith Hans Langenbacher; the two men had first met at the atelier of goldsmith Jón Sigmundsson in Reykjavík in 1958\, and been impressed by each other‘s methods\, use of materials\, and skill. \nAt the National Gallery of Iceland\, an opportunity is offered for the first time to see Dieter Roth‘s unique jewellery in a coherent context. The exhibition bears witness to his experimentalism and unconventional methods\, and sheds new light on the oeuvre of this outstandingly versatile artist. \n\nCurator: Björn Roth

SUMMARY:Skartgripir Dieters Roth
DESCRIPTION:Dieter Roth (1930—1998) var í senn brautryðjandi sem virti engar takmarkanir\, hugsuður\, frumkvöðull\, skáld\, tónlistarmaður\, kvikmyndagerðarmaður og myndlistarmaður.

SUMMARY:Are you glad if you can ask something?
DESCRIPTION:Networking between East and North. \nAvant-garde artists from the Eastern Bloc wanted to connect to the Western art world in the sixties and seventies. At the same time\, Icelandic art scene was opening to Fluxus and mail art due to the widespread networking by the artists and galleries such as SÚM and Gallery Suðurgata 7. This two-sided attempt to connect resulted in lively correspondence and a few exhibitions by Hungarian artists. \nWe will shed light on artists’ practices in networking and putting up exhibitions in Iceland when in the East communication was hectically censored\, and traveling was strictly limited. Cooperation between Icelandic and Hungarian artists led to humorous\, thought-provoking\, and often self-ironic shows. \nIn the summer exhibition at LÁ Art Museum\, the re-enactment of these historical shows will be accompanied by recent art practices of the very same artists who took part in the cooperation and made the Icelandic art field of the seventies alive. \n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nParticipating artists \nEggert Pétursson (IS\, 1956) his visual world focusses on plants in all their various forms\, as found in Iceland. Lives and works in Reykjavík. \nEndre Tot (HU\, 1937) Hungarian painter\, performer\, and conceptual artist. One of the most active practitioners of the Mail Art movement and creator of artist’s books. In 1978\, he emigrated to West-Berlin then to Cologne\, where he lives and works. His works are\, among others\, in Centre George Pompidou\, Paris; MoMA\, New York; or Tate Modern\, London. \nGábor Attalai (HU\, 1934–2011)\, was conceptual artist\, photographer\, installation artist and performer\, one of the leading representatives of the Hungarian artistic nomadism. In his conceptual work\, with a large dose of humour and irony\, he explores the relationship between art practice and theory\, as well as art and its environment. \nGéza Perneczky (HU\, 1936) is a protagonist of Hungarian conceptual art and part of the Hungarian Neo-Avant-Garde. In 1970 the artist\, art historian\, art critic and author emigrated to Cologne\, where he lives and works until today. \nIngólfur Arnarsson (IS\, 1956) former Professor at Iceland Academy of the Arts\, Reykjavik\, Iceland\, one of the leading artists of Icelandic minimal art. \nKees Visser (b. 1948) left his native Holland in the 1970s and settled in Iceland where he continues to spend part of his time while also residing in the Netherlands and in France. In Iceland he became part of the cosmopolitan art scene with its strong focus on Fluxus\, minimalism and conceptual art. Visser’s own work has long combined these influences in works that emphasise abstraction and serial presentation\, focusing on colour theory and the exploration of spatial forms and representations. \nKristján Guðmundsson (IS\, 1941) was central to the Icelandic group SÚM in the 1960s\, young artists inspired by international conceptualism. They became a hugely influential turning point in the history of contemporary art in Iceland. For decades Kristján Gudmundsson has created artworks that capture the moment where concept collides with reality. He lives and works in Iceland. \nRúrí (IS\, 1951) is a contemporary artist who works in new media\, photography\, sculpture\, and installation. She is one of Scandinavia’s first performance artists\, and an early practitioner of multimedia installation in northern Europe. She is an internationally exhibiting artist and currently lives and works in Reykjavík\, Iceland. \nSigurður Guðmundsson (IS\, 1942) is among the most prominent artists of Iceland. During his career\, he has expressed himself in most media – photography\, text\, sculpture\, painting\, performance. In his works\, absurdity and occasional comedy shift into a mood of melancholy and a flight from life on earth as we know it. He lives and works in Djúpivogur\, Reykjavík\, Amsterdam and Xiamen in China. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCurator: Zsóka Leposa \nCo-curator: László Százados

DESCRIPTION:Tengslamyndun milli austurs og norðurs.

SUMMARY:Þorvaldur Jónsson: Hundurinn er til staðar
\nTitill sýningarinnar er vísun í verkið „The Artist Is Present“ þar sem höfundurinn\, Marina Abramović\, sat gegnt gestum sýningarinnar og starði í augun á þeim.

SUMMARY:Ingibjörg Sigurjónsdóttir: De rien
DESCRIPTION:We welcome you to the opening of our upcoming show\, De rien by Ingibjörg Sigurjónsdóttir on the 2nd of June\, 5pm at Kling & Bang. Ingibjörg presents thirteen new sculptures\, drawings\, reliefs and spatial works\, which were made especially for Kling & Bang. \nWe will also be celebrating the release of a new book by the artist\, Cowards Can’t Wait for the Apocalypse\, published by Tunglið publishing. \nThis all ends\, just at a variable pace. Everything is gradually obliterated and erased. Except what is damaged and suddenly disappears. I want to stop time\, slow destruction down. \nZero \nZero balance \nExcept this does not balance to zero. Destruction accumulates. A colourless hue of this and that. A faded shell of nothing. Sun faded zero. \nBut this nothing\, this zero\, still exists. You can light it\, burn it down. But I refuse to burn this zero. It fits well in the palm. It‘s faded on one side. The colours are vanishing. The sun that I love\, adore and miss destroys everything. And I brazenly hold nothing. De rien. \nThe exhibition is part of Reykjavík Arts Festival and is supported by the Icelandic Visual Arts Fund.

SUMMARY:Ingibjörg Sigurjónsdóttir: De rien
DESCRIPTION:Verið hjartanlega velkomin á opnun sýningarinnar De rien eftir Ingibjörgu Sigurjónsdóttur fimmtudaginn 2. júní kl. 17 í Kling & Bang. Hún hefur m.a. haldið sýningar í Skaftfelli og Listasafni Reykjavíkur\, auk samsýninga í Gerðarsafni; 3 134\, Aþenu; GES-2\, Moskvu; Dimensions Variable\, Miami. Samhliða því að þróa sitt sérstæða tungumál sem myndlistarmaður hefur hún unnið í samstarfi með öðrum listamönnum\, sýningarstýrt fjölda sýninga og skrifað um myndlist. Ingibjörg býr og starfar í Reykjavík.

SUMMARY:Auður Lóa Guðnadóttir
DESCRIPTION:Auður Lóa Guðnadóttir (b. 1993) is an artist that plays on the border of the objective and the subjective\, of sculpture and drawing\, art and reality. She works with mundane phenomena\, figurative imitation\, and the visual language of both ancient and recent history. She seeks to activate the artwork itself\, but always as an object in its own social environment. She continues on this path in the exhibition Predecession as she focuses on household items and decorative objects from various points in history. \nAuður Lóa graduated from the fine arts department of Iceland University of the Arts in 2015. Since then she has worked independently as well as in collaboration with other artists; she has been involved in group exhibitions such as Leikfimi in Safnasafnið\, Pressures of The Deep in The Living Art Museum\, and Everything at The Same Time in Hafnarborg. She was the recipient of the Motivational Award of the Icelandic Visual Arts Council in 2018\, for the exhibition Diana Forever which she curated and participated in. In the spring of 2021 she opened her first big solo exhibition\, Yes / No\, in Gallery D at the Reykjavík Art Museum that consisted of more than one hundred Papier-mâché sculptures.

Auður Lóa leitast við að virkja sjálf listaverkin\, ætíð þó sem fyrirbæri í sínu eigin félagslega umhverfi. Á sýningunni Forvera heldur hún áfram á þeirri braut\, en heimilisbúnaður og skrautmunir frá ýmsum tímapunktum sögunnar eru að þessu sinni í brennidepli. \nAuður Lóa útskrifaðist af myndlistasviði Listaháskóla Íslands 2015. Síðan þá hefur hún starfað sjálfstætt\, í samstarfi við aðra listamenn og tekið þátt í sýningum\, s.s. Leikfimi í Safnasafninu\, Djúpþrýstingur í Nýlistasafninu og Allt á sama tíma í Hafnarborg. Hún hlaut hvatningarverðlaun Myndlistarráðs 2018 fyrir sýninguna Díana\, að eilífu sem hún tók þátt í og stýrði. Vorið 2021 opnaði hún sína fyrstu stóru einkasýningu í D-sal Listasafns Reykjavíkur\, Já / Nei\, sem samanstóð af yfir 100 skúlptúrum úr pappamassa.

SUMMARY:Black and White
DESCRIPTION:Opposites and different things\, attitudes and perspectives. What separates us can also connect us. This exhibition consists of work by five artists who work with black and white photography. The artists approach their subjects in different ways and the art pieces are multiple: landscape\, people\, stories\, places and atmosphere. Opposites and fears\, quiet and affection and several manifestations of daily life\, adventures\, culture\, the unknown and the familiar. \nParticipating artists: Sosnowska\, Christopher Taylor\, Katrín Elvarsdóttir\, Páll Stefánsson and Spessi. \nTheir background is diverse\, which is clearly visible in their works.  At the same time\, when looking more closely\, there are also several things that unites them. \nThe exhibition is a part of Reykjavík Arts Festival. \nCurator: Hlynur Hallsson.

SUMMARY:Hrafn Hólmfríðarson Jónsson (Krummi): Bene Fits
DESCRIPTION:Bene Fits is a compelling and intimate work of photography by Hrafn Hólmfríðarson Jónsson (Krummi)\, dealing with the reality of being disabled and living in poverty in the 21st century Icelandic welfare state – of a deprived existence in one of the world‘s wealthiest countries. Bene Fits places the personal alongside the socio-economic\, creating an experience that stirs us\, sparks reflection and offers a new vision. The work starkly underlines the interplay between market and welfare system in a society where happiness is said to lie in increased purchasing power. Where does that leave those of us who cannot take part in the consumer frenzy? \nKrummi was born in Reykjavík in 1990. He graduated from the School of Photography in early 2021 and has since gained praise for his atmospheric and sensitive photography. His work has been exhibited at Gallerí Port\, Ásmundarsalur\, the Reykjavík Museum of Photography and at the Copenhagen Photo Festival. \nKrummi‘s photographs will be displayed in Pósthússtræti by Austurvöllur throughout the summer.

SUMMARY:Hrafn Hólmfríðarson Jónsson (Krummi): Bótaþegi
DESCRIPTION:Bótaþegi er áhrifaríkt og persónulegt ljósmyndaverk Hrafns Hólmfríðarsonar Jónssonar (Krumma) sem fjallar um þann veruleika að vera fatlaður og lifa við fátækt í íslensku velferðarkerfi 21. aldarinnar – að líða efnislegan skort í einu best stæða ríki heims.

SUMMARY:Steinunn Thorarinsdottir: ARMORS
DESCRIPTION:In Hallgrímskirkja square\, three pairs of quiet figures appear. Armored\, provocative beings confront vulnerable\, androgynous figures who despite their apparent vulnerability stand strong against aggression. The interplay of opposites and antagonistic forces also sparks notions of fusion – of a possible dialogue\, relations despite differences. \nThe roots of Armors\, Steinunn Þórarinsdóttir‘s stunning exhibition\, go back to the artist‘s time in NYC almost a decade ago. At the Metropolitan Museum\, the artist became fascinated with its extensive armors collection and of armors as a symbol of power and aggression. A collaboration between the artist and the museum ensued and the figures displayed outside Hallgrímskirkja are based on three precious medieval armors from Germany\, England and Italy that were 3D scanned with great precision by museum staff and turned into cast metal sculptures. \nInformation on the creative process behind the exhibition will be displayed in the Hallgrímskirkja foyer while the sculptures stand in the square.

SUMMARY:Steinunn Thorarinsdottir: BRYNJUR
DESCRIPTION:Á torginu fyrir framan Hallgrímskirkju birtast þöglar\, kyrrstæðar mannverur. Brynjuklæddar og ögrandi standa þær gegnt varnarlausum\, kynlausum fígúrum sem þrátt fyrir berskjöldun sína bjóða valdinu byrginn. \nHér leika saman andstæður og kraftar af ólíkum toga en þó kvikna einnig hugmyndir um samruna – um mögulegt samtal\, tengsl hins gjörólíka. \nRótina að Brynjum\, mögnuðu útilistaverki Steinunnar Þórarinsdóttur\, má rekja aftur til dvalar listakonunnar í New York-borg fyrir hartnær áratug.

SUMMARY:Brák Jónsdóttir: Sé (að Nýp)
DESCRIPTION:“Oh steady now\nEverything in its place\nSteady now”\n– Jason Molina (Magnolia Electric Co. – Steady Now) \nThere is a place for the inside and there is a place for the outside\, Brák Jónsdóttir has made a place for the parts in between\, a filter to blur these borders. In the exhibition See\, there are two wooden structures placed precariously in the windows of the gallery\, intuitively yet carefully constructed\, shelf by shelf. \nBrák has embraced the history and previous function of the wooden material\, with its blemishes and sun bleached spots. What was perhaps once a bookshelf or cupboard is now an open scaffolding displaying glass panes\, jars and ornaments\, filled with unspecific specimens of the land around Nyp. Within these jars and containers is where the outside is contemplated\, she has collected stones\, seaweed\, leaves\, rotten wood and other items from around the exhibition site\, just as she collected the wood and glass to house them. These objects are brought inside and they play with our focus of the outside\, a filter or a threshold to pinpoint the vague idea of ones surroundings. \nThis installation contemplates the very human act of displaying objects of intrigue and beauty\, referencing the history of cabinets of curiosity and their amalgamation of science and art. Whilst these cabinets suggest hiddenness and sacredness\, Brák’s open and fragile structure allows for ethereal and abstract notions to be displayed. There are shadows and lines cast by the stained glass. There is water with its unknown origin\, evaporating and blending with plants and remnants of wood and stone. There is the colour of the glass that changes with the daylight. You can look at what is within these jars\, or just as easily peak through to where they once existed\, in sight but out of reach. She has taken moments of intrigue and inquiry\, experimenting with time and space trapped in glass and barely preserved\, left to deteriorate\, change\, sprout and grow. \nWhen arriving somewhere new\, you gather your surroundings\, collect your thoughts\, and in such an affecting landscape there is plenty to gather. Brák has gathered the immaterial feeling of arriving somewhere beautiful.

SUMMARY:Sporbaugur
DESCRIPTION:Litabækur fyrir börn eru mjög undarleg fyrirbæri.

SUMMARY:Ellipse
DESCRIPTION:Colouring books for children are a strange thing. What are they for? They do not develop the children’s creative thinking: they are told not to colour outside the lines and their only avenue of expression in thought the choice of colours. Perhaps the pedagogical value is only that: To teach the child to follow the rules and accept the fact that they will only control the least important aspects of their lives. This colouring book\, by Gabríela Friðriksdóttir and Björn Roth\, seems to follow this formula. This book\, however\, is part of an art exhibition in an art museum and the original drawings are framed on the walls\, presented to visitors in much the way children run to mother to show her how neatly they coloured in the page in their book. Everything here is like a fairy tale and our imagination is set free. Installations and video works draw us deeper into this mysterious world where anything can happen and anything can become art. \nCurator: Jón Proppé

SUMMARY:Margrét H. Blöndal: Ode to Join
DESCRIPTION:The exhibition Liðamót / Ode to Join comprises on the one hand drawings made with oil and powdered pigments\, and on the other three-dimensional pieces to be made directly into the the exhibition venue as a response to to the space. The Icelandic title Liðamót is a reference to the fact that where three or more joints come together\, movement results. In Margrét‘s works\, movement arises from partitions to be installed in the space\, the placement of the works and the relationship between them. On the other hand\, the English part of the title\, Ode to Join\, is an ode to connections\, where each sculpture or drawing becomes one element of a polyphonic music composition. Margrét‘s works transcend words\, and are imbued with beauty and a supernatural attraction – and indeed Margrét‘s installations have been likened to symphonic poems. \nMargrét H. Blöndal was born in 1970 in Reykjavík\, where she lives and works. She graduated in 1993 from the multimedia department of the Icelandic College of Arts and Crafts (precursor of the Iceland University of the Arts). \nIn 1997 she completed her MFA degree from Mason Gross School of Arts\, Rutgers University in New Jersey\, USA. During her long career Margrét has exhibited widely in Iceland and internationally since 1994.

SUMMARY:Margrét H. Blöndal: Liðamót
DESCRIPTION:Sýningin Liðamót / Ode to Join samanstendur annars vegar af teikningum gerðum með olíu og litadufti og hins vegar þrívíðum verkum sem Margrét H. Blöndal mun vinna beint inn í rými sýningarsalarins. Heiti sýningarinnar Liðamót  vísar í þá staðreynd að þar sem þrír eða fleiri liðir koma saman verður til hreyfing. Í verkum Margrétar mótast hreyfingin út frá skilrúmum sem sett verða upp í rýminu\, staðsetningu verkanna og innra samhengi þeirra. Enski hluti titilsins\, Ode to Join\, er hins vegar óður til tengingar þar sem hver skúlptúr eða teikning verður eins og ein eining í pólífónísku tónverki. Verk Margrétar eru handan orða og búa yfir fegurð og yfirskilvitlegu aðdráttarafli enda hefur innsetningum hennar verið líkt við tónaljóð. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMargrét H. Blöndal er fædd árið 1970 í Reykjavík þar sem hún býr og starfar. Margrét útskrifaðist úr fjöltæknideild Myndlista- og handíðaskóla Íslands árið 1993. Árið 1997 lauk hún MFA-gráðu frá Mason Gross School of Arts\, Rutgers University í New Jersey í Bandaríkjunum. Margrét á langan feril að baki og hefur sýnt víða bæði heima og erlendis síðan 1994.

SUMMARY:Ingunn Fjóla Ingþórsdóttir: The Only Constant is Change
DESCRIPTION:Ingunn Fjóla Ingþórsdóttir’s installation The Only Constant is Changebears an element of familiarity as the artist revisits and combines components from former works in a new manner. The multifaceted piece conforms to its own inner operating system on one hand and the presence of guests on the other\, disguising the starting point of motion. \nThe only constant is change is a materialized reflection\, a celebratory nod even\, towards the systematic thinking which has been Ingunn’s modus operandi\, although currently shown in an expanded version. Through the years Ingunn has developed and worked in alignment with personalized systematic processes; with The Only Constant is Change she shifts her focus towards the technical systems and systemic processes that govern\, directly and indirectly\, humanity and the world at large. The piece evokes questions around algorithms\, coding\, political and economic systems together with internet scrolling alike; putting personal agency and influence into question. \nIngunn Fjóla Ingþórsdóttir (b. 1976) graduated with a MA degree in Fine Art from the Iceland University of the Arts in 2017 and a BA degree in Fine Art from the same institution in 2007. She also holds a BA degree in Art History from the University of Aarhus\, received in 2002. Ingunn works mainly in painting\, weaving and installation. \nIn her work\, Ingunn has an inclination to extend the field of abstract painting into an open system\, where the work is animated by the viewer and the space through direct participation.

SUMMARY:Ingunn Fjóla Ingþórsdóttir: Ekkert er víst nema að allt breytist
