SUMMARY:Melanie Ubaldo: Almost Perfect
DESCRIPTION:Almost perfect is as anecdotal as all of my previous works.\nA complete stranger tells me something and it subconsciously has an immense effect on my practice. Talking about an old painting of mine that has since been “lost.” Almost perfect might just be the greatest compliment I’ve ever heard about my work. As if chasing the one that got away\, this exhibition is just one of many\, countless attempts at reclaiming/reimagining that which is almost perfect\nI don’t quite know what the stranger meant with almost perfect but I have since come to believe that it is the serendipitous happenstance -slightly off and it’s brilliant; and impossible to replicate. Anxious rubbing of oil and ink on serene canvas\, the plastic scent of acrylic mixed with toxic turpentine and spray\, foot steps and cat hair – almost perfect.\nMelanie Ubaldo (b. 1992\, Philippines) graduated with MA Fine Arts from the Iceland University of Arts in 2022. Her artistic practice is characterized by vulnerable autobiographical narratives around racism\, prejudice\, power and discrimination. Hand sewn paintings containing text with graffiti-like vandalism oftentimes of her own crude experiences of others preconceptions\, thus exposing the power of immediate\, unreflected judgment; and various installations that addresses memory\, displacement\, immigration and identity. Melanie has exhibited widely in Iceland and internationally. Melanie was the recipient of the Svavar Guðnasson and Ásta Eiríksdóttir fund for promising artists in 2021. Alongside her solo practice\, Melanie is one of the founders of Lucky 3\, a collective of Icelandic artists of Filipino origins. Lucky 3 were the recipients of the Motivational Award from the Icelandic Art Prize in 2022. Her works have since been acquired by the Reykjavik Museum and Hafnarborg for their permanent collections and in private collections.

SUMMARY:high tide – low tide
DESCRIPTION:This year’s autumn exhibition at Hafnarborg is high tide – low tide\, curated by Sigrún Alba Sigurðardóttir. The focus of the exhibition will be on the seaboard\, both grand in scale and home to little lifeforms\, delicate flora and diverse rock formations. There\, the large and fierce clashes with the small and fragile\, as the waves crash relentlessly on the shore. \nAt the exhibition\, the seaboard will be viewed through the work of artists from different countries\, whose culture and economy are greatly shaped by the seaboard and the ocean. Throughout history\, those that live near the coast have in large part based their livelihood on the proximity to the ocean\, where the shoreline marks a clear border\, in addition to being a bridge to other worlds. The seaboard can thus play a part in elucidating the complex positions and responsibilities mankind has towards nature in the Anthropocene. \nIn relation to climate change\, one might view the seaboard as an area of conflict or battleground. Rising sea levels have an immediate effect on the seaboard – life at the coast will change as global temperatures continue to rise and this may even force humans to resettle in new places en masse. The exhibition will then call attention to the tenuous yet precious relationship we have with nature\, in the hope of moving viewers and causing visitors to rethink their own position towards the seaboard in a whole new light. \nThe participating artists are Alda Mohr Eyðunardóttir\, Anna Rún Tryggvadóttir\, Pétur Thomsen\, Stuart Richardson\, Studio ThinkingHand (Rhoda Thing and Mikkel Dahlin Bojesen) and Tadashi Ono. \nSigrún Alba Sigurðardóttir is an independent curator\, having previously curated exhibitions at the National Gallery of Iceland\, the LÁ Art Museum\, the Reykjavík Museum of Photography and the National Museum of Iceland. She is currently working on an exhibition based on collaboration between Fotografisk Center\, Denmark\, Landskrona Foto\, Sweden\, Northern Photographic Center\, Finland\, and the Akureyri Art Museum\, Iceland. This exhibition is set to open in Copenhagen in January 2022. \nSigrún Alba is a teacher of art history at the University of Iceland\, as well as teaching at the design department of the Iceland University of the Arts. She has published seven books and a number of academic papers\, on Icelandic art and photography in particular.

SUMMARY:flæðir að – flæðir frá
DESCRIPTION:Haustsýning Hafnarborgar í ár er flæðir að – flæðir frá í sýningarstjórn Sigrúnar Ölbu Sigurðardóttur. SUMMARY:GOETHE MORPH*: A Growing Body of Evidence
DESCRIPTION:From September 5-15\, 2022\, Goethe Morph* invite the public to a holistic program of think tanks and performances\, lectures and exhibitions – on site at Nordic House Reykjavík\, as well as outdoors and digitally.\nThe exhibition A Growing Body of Evidence will be open in Hvelfing at the Nordic House in Reykjavík          10th Sep – 23rd Dec \nWe live in a crisis-ridden time of hesitation and are at odds in our pursuit of a positive common future and in addressing the pressing problems of our time. While the human capacity to generate ideas seems limitless\, our cerebral potential as architects of planetary exploitation and destruction could arguably be more aligned with our bodily and emotional intelligence. It might enable us to reshape our relationship with the natural world and our fellow inhabitants. Goethe Morph* Iceland\, a transcultural intervention of the Goethe-Institut and Nordic House Reykjavík\, provides a platform for artists\, thinkers and activists from Iceland\, Germany\, Greenland\, Kenya\, Mali\, Poland\, and Syria to share their ideas along a unifying theme: How we always wanted to have lived. \nGoethe Morph* Iceland                     5th Sep – 15th Sep 2022\nA Growing Body of Evidence         10th Sep – 23rd Dec 2022 \nCurators: Arnbjörg María Danielsen and Thomas Schaupp. \nMore information to come\, in the meantime please visit their website and social media.

SUMMARY:Pétur Gaut: Skálar
DESCRIPTION:Pétur Gautur er vel þekktur fyrir uppstillingar sínar og djarft litaval í málverki. Hann aðhyllist einfaldleikann\, notar fáa en vel valda liti með áherslu á andstæður ljóss og skugga. Uppstillingin\, svokallað „still life”\, er klassískt viðfangsefni í listasögunni sem býður þó alltaf upp á nýja nálgun sem Pétur Gautur hefur í gegnum tíðina kannað og leikið sér með. Í nýjustu verkum hans er íslenski valmúinn í aðalhlutverki. Í þeim verkum hefur Pétur fjarlægst hina klassísku uppbyggingu „still life” verkanna\, eða uppstillinganna. Kunnugleg skálaformin endurtaka sig þó í krónum valmúans sem hríslast um myndflötinn í óbeislaðri fegurð sinni.\nPétur Gautur er fæddur í Reykjavík árið 1966. Hann stundaði nám í listasögu við Háskóla Íslands og í málaradeild Myndlista- og handíðaskóla Íslands. Hann er einnig með M.Art Ed. gráðu í listkennslu frá Listaháskóla Íslands.

SUMMARY:Pétur Gaut: Bowls / Skálar
DESCRIPTION:Pétur Gautur is well known for his timeless still life paintings and a fresh selection of colour in his work. Pétur Gautur is a firm believer in simplicity\, often using only a few but carefully selected colours\, focusing on the contrast between shadows and light. The still life is a classic motif in art history\, but it can always be approached from a new angle\, which Pétur Gautur has explored and played with throughout his career. Lately the flower papaver\, or poppy\, has emerged more often in his art\, and the artist is moving away from the classical structure of still life painting. However the familiar form of the bowl from the still life repeats itself in the form of the poppy flowers as they make their way along the canvas in their unbridled beauty.\nPétur Gautur was born in Reykjavík in 1966. He studied art history at the University of Iceland and attended the painting department of the Icelandic College of Arts and Crafts. He also has an M.Art Ed. degree in teaching art from the Icelandic University of the Arts.

SUMMARY:Solander 250: Letters from Iceland
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, August 27th at 2 p.m. two exhibitions will open in Hafnarborg’s Sverris-gallery. Solander 250: Letters from Iceland and Paradise Lost – Daniel Solander’s Legacy. \nThe exhibition Solander 250: A Letter From Iceland is held in remembrance of one of the first foreign scientific expeditions to Iceland\, in 1772\, i.e. 250 years ago. On this journey was one of Carl von Linné‘s apostles\, the Swedish natural scientist Daniel Solander. Among the things Solander and his fellow travellers recorded in Iceland were nature\, culture\, traditions\, and clothing. Ten Icelandic graphic-artists will interpret these events from 1772 and how the nation and the country have changed since then. \nSimultaneously the exhibition Paradise Lost – Daniel Solander’s Legacy. will be opened. Solander was the main botanist on the HMS Endeavor on the first European expedition to Australia. The exhibition has already been set up in New Zealand\, Australia\, and Sweden. The two exhibitions thus form a unique dialogue between the Arctic and the Pacific through Daniel Solander’s travels. The two exhibitions are the collaborative project of the Swedish embassy in Iceland and the Icelandic Printmakers Association. \nParticipants in the exhibition Solander 250: Letters from Iceland are Anna Líndal\, Aðalheiður Valgeirsdóttir\, Daði Guðbjörnsson\, Gíslína Dögg Bjarkadóttir\, Guðmundur Ármann Sigurjónsson\, Iréne Jensen\, Laura Valentino\, Soffía Sæmundsdóttir\, Valgerður Björnsdóttir\, Viktor Hannesson. \nParticipants in the exhibition Paradise Lost – Daniel Solander’s Legacy. SUMMARY:Solander 250: Bréf frá Íslandi
DESCRIPTION:Laugardaginn 27. ágúst kl. 14 verða tvær sýningar opnaðar í Sverrissal Hafnarborgar. Sýningin Solander 250: Bréf frá Íslandi og Paradise Lost – Daniel Solander’s Legacy. \nSýningin Solander 250: Bréf frá Íslandi er sett upp til að minnast þess að árið 2022 eru 250 ár liðin frá fyrsta erlenda vísindaleiðangrinum til Íslands 1772. Með í þeirri för var einn af lærisveinum hins heimsþekkta sænska náttúruvísindamanns Carls von Linné\, sænski náttúrufræðingurinn Daniel Solander. Solander skrásetti m.a. \nÞátttakendur í Paradise Lost – Daniel Solander’s Legacy eru John Pusateri\, Alexis Neal\, Dagmar Dyck\, John McLean\, Tabatha Forbes\, Michel Tuffery\, Sharnae Beardsley\, Jo Ogier\, Lynn Taylor og Jenna Packer. \nListamenn: \nAnna Líndal\,\nAðalheiður Valgeirsdóttir\,\nDaði Guðbjörnsson\,\nGíslína Dögg Bjarkadóttir\,\nGuðmundur Ármann Sigurjónsson\,\nIréne Jensen\,\nLaura Valentino\,\nSoffía Sæmundsdóttir\,\nValgerður Björnsdóttir\,\nViktor Hannesson. \n  \nParadise Lost – Daniel Solander’s Legacy: \nJohn Pusateri\,\nAlexis Neal\,\nDagmar Dyck\,\nJohn McLean\,\nTabatha Forbes\,\nMichel Tuffery\,\nSharnae Beardsley\,\nJo Ogier\,\nLynn Taylor and Jenna Packer.

SUMMARY:Egill Logi Jónasson: Your Best Is Not Enough
DESCRIPTION:“There is a man\, there is a young man\, there is a teenager. In the biggest room of the smallest house hangs a picture of a lion. The lion is holding a smaller lion. That lion carries its tail\, thereby forming an endless circulation. Outside the window the wind blows vigorously on a being who is seeking shelter in an unfinished back building. The music lingers\, partly.” \nEgill Jónasson (born 1989)\, also known as Drengurinn fengurinn\, lives and works in Akureyri. He graduated from Akureyri School of Visual Arts 2012 and finished a BA degree from Iceland University of The Arts 2016. Jónasson uses various media in his art creations such as music\, performance and video. He is a member of the Kaktus artgroup.

DESCRIPTION:„Það er maður\, það er ungur maður\, það er unglingur. Í stærsta herberginu í minnsta húsinu hangir mynd af ljóni.\nLjónið heldur á minna ljóni. Það ljón heldur um halann á sér og myndar endalausa hringrás ráns og dýra. Fyrir utan gluggann blæs vindurinn sérstaklega kröftuglega á veru sem leitar skjóls í hálfbyggðu bakhúsi. SUMMARY:Steinunn Gunnlaugsdóttir: blood & honour
DESCRIPTION:The work consists of four flags that flutter on flagpoles on the balcony of Akureyri Art Museum. The flags are the product of an experiment where three factors were joined into one: the Icelandic national flag\, the font Comic Sans and the letters from the Icelandic alphabet that reprecent the sounds that people make when they feel pain: A\, Á\, Ó\, Æ. \nSteinunn Gunnlaugsdóttir (born 1983) graduated from the Visual Arts Department of Iceland University of the Arts 2008 and studied at the Ashkal Alwan cultural institution in Beirut\, Lebanon 2013-2014. \nWith a mix of merriment and seriousness she tackles the multiple ideological and ethical systems that humans create\, are born into\, tolerate and fight against. By observing and deconstructing / stripping the basis of the civilized human world she creates material for her attempts to address the present. \nGunnlaugsdóttir was nominated for the Visual Art Award as the artist of the year 2018. In 2021 she recieved a prize from the Richard Serra fund for her contribution to sculpture.

SUMMARY:They won´t stand time
DESCRIPTION:They won’t stand time merges dissolution and expectations with the fluidity of life and the creative force of destruction\, transformation and movement. Processes that belong to both nature and society\, fleeting but momentarily real. \nLiquid seeps through holes and cracks\, sparks life\, hollows and takes. Earthly remains in salt containers become one with the ocean again. Evaporate or disintegrate\, but do not disappear. There is always the possibility of something more. If we wish hard enough\, we’ll reach transcendental bliss. \nThe board of The Living Art Museum brought the artists together through an open call issued by the museum\, Nermine El Ansari and Margrét Dúadóttir Landmark facilitated their conversation\, in collaboration with Sunna Ástþórsdóttir.

SUMMARY:Gissur Guðjónsson: Svæði / Site
DESCRIPTION:The series is an exploration of unidentified places where traces of human existence have gathered.\n\nGissur uses this material and its forms to make his own landscape. Shaping it by corrupting the viewer‘s perspective using the methodology of photomapping while arranging the photos together. The sites Gissur photographs seem to have by pure coincidence become a temporary haven for things people no longer see a use for. Curiosity and Gissur’s sincere interest in things that have lost their usability shines through in this work\, as was the motivational force behind the making of this work.\n\nGissur Guðjónsson is an Icelandic photographer based in Selfoss\, born in 1991. Gissur studied photography in Ljósmyndaskólinn and graduated from there in January 2020.

Hún hefur sýnt á ýmsum samsýningum\, bæði hér heima og erlendis. Staður er hennar fyrsta einkasýning.

SUMMARY:Blowout
DESCRIPTION:Á sýningunni sýnir Joakim Derlow ný verk sem öll eru unnin útfrá hugmyndum um sögulegt samhengi rekaviðs og tengingar hans við þjóðsögu Grettis Ásmundssonar.\n\nVerkin eru kímið viðbragð við íslenskum sagnaheim og menningu þar sem hann skoðar þá brenglun og þann misskilning sem gjarnan á sér stað þegar erlendir gestir heyra staðbundnar sögur og staðreyndir.\nListamannateymið Ellinor Aurora Aasgaard og Zayne Armstrong sýna málverk og lágmyndir sem hafa skírskotanir til leiktjalda- og kvikmyndagerðar.
