SUMMARY:Jón Helgi Pálmason: As the Image Fades
DESCRIPTION:Memories are complex\, and there are many elements that come into play when considering them. While certain things stick vividly in the memory\, other events are easily forgotten. We appear to have no say in the matter either. We go on living\, and new memories are made every day while others are lost. What happens to all those forgotten memories? And do they matter?\nOur memories shape us\, as do the people and the different environments we encounter. \nJón Helgi contemplates what it is that makes people who they are today. What sort of people and environments have shaped their being\, and how do they appear in their memories? What do people see when they close their eyes?\nIn his exhibition\, Jón Helgi combines images from the past with his own personal photographs offering visitors an insight into how he visualises his memories. In other words\, what he sees when he closes his eyes. With each blink\, another memory\, or an image of one\, is formed. “As I close my eyes\, I see the smiling face of my grandmother sitting in her good old armchair knitting yet another woolly jumper… I recall snow racing towards the windscreen at 90 kilometres in the darkness of night; by my side is my father; we can see no further than the next snow pole….” Photographs can act as memories. \nJón Helgi Pálmason is originally from Hafnarfjörður but now lives in The Hague\, Holland\, where he studies photography at the Royal Academy of Arts. Before that\, he graduated from the photography department of the Technical College of Reykjavik and the KBH Film & Fotoskole in Copenhagen. Jón Helgi’s works have been exhibited both in Iceland and abroad.

SUMMARY:Gallerí Gangur í 40 ár
DESCRIPTION:Gallerí Gangur er listamannarekið sýningarrými sem stofnað var af myndlistarmanninum Helga Þorgils Friðjónssyni árið 1979 og er líklega elsta einkarekna gallerí landsins sem starfað hefur samfellt frá stofnun. Gangurinn hefur alla tíð verið rekinn á heimili Helga\, en starfsemin hófst með sýningu á verki Hreins Friðfinnssonar For the Time Being snemma árs 1980 að Laufásvegi 79. Frá Laufásveginum flutti Gangurinn í Mávahlíð 24\, síðan á Freyjugötu 32\, þaðan á Rekagranda 8\, og er nú í Brautarholti 8 en árin 2017–2018 hafði Gangurinn einnig útibú á Kárastíg 9 á Hofsósi á meðan Helgi bjó þar ásamt fjölskyldu sinni um eins árs skeið. \nMeginmarkmið Helga með stofnun sýningarrýmisins á heimili sínu var að kynna myndlist erlendra samtímalistamanna hér á landi\, en þegar galleríið var stofnað var kynning erlendrar samtímalistar hérlendis mjög fátíð. Þess má geta að Helgi hafði áður komið að stofnun og rekstri nokkurra sýningarrýma og má þar nefna Gallerí Output sem hann stofnaði ásamt Þóri Vigfússyni árið 1975\, Gallerí Suðurgötu 7\, Gallery Lóu í Haarlem í Hollandi og Gallerí Vísi í dagblaðinu Vísi\, sem öll voru stofnuð árið 1976\, sem og Nýlistasafnið árið 1978. \nVarla verður komið tölu á fjölda þeirra samtímalistamanna sem sýnt hafa verk sín í Ganginum á þeim 42 árum sem galleríið hefur verið starfrækt. Langflestir þeirra eru erlendir listamenn og sumir þekktir á alþjóðavísu. Þeir listamenn sem sýnt hafa í Ganginum fást við myndlist í ýmsum miðlum og hefur Helgi leitast við að sýna verk listamanna sem vinna með aðra strauma en tíðkast á Íslandi\, t.d. ofurraunsæi\, töfraraunsæi\, ný-súrrealisma\, geómetrísk flatarmálverk og hugmyndalist/konseptlist. Meðal þeirra eru Karin Kneffel\, Milan Kunc\, Helmut Federle\, Stephen McKenna\, James Rielly\, Jan Knap\, Sigrid Sandstrom\, Robert Devriendt\, Jenny Watson\, Thomas Huber\, Lisa Milroy\, John Zürier\, Urs Luthi og síðast en ekki síst svissneski listamaðurinn Martin Disler sem sýndi fyrstur erlendra listamanna í Ganginum árið 1980. Margir þessara listamanna hafa tengst landi og þjóð og haft áhrif á og auðgað íslenskt myndlistarlíf á margvíslegan hátt\, t.d. með kennslu í Myndlista- og handíðaskóla Íslands\, með þátttöku í sýningum í helstu söfnum landsins og með því að kynna íslenska listamenn erlendis. Þá hafa margir listamannanna dvalið um lengri eða skemmri tíma á Íslandi og má til að mynda merkja áhrif þess í ákveðnum verkum þeirra\, svo að segja má að áhrifin séu á báða bóga.

SUMMARY:Forty Years of The Corridor
DESCRIPTION:The Corridor is an artist-run exhibition space founded by artist Helgi Þorgils Friðjónsson in 1979\, and it is probably Iceland’s longest-running privately-operated gallery. The Corridor has always been housed in Helgi Þorgils‘  home; the gallery‘s first exhibition\, of For the Time Being by Hreinn Friðfinnsson early in 1980\, was held at Laufásvegur 79. The Corridor moved on to Mávahlíð 24\, then Freyjugata 32 and Rekagrandi 8. It is now located at Brautarholt 8; in 2017–18 the Corridor had a branch at Kárastígur 9 in Hofsós\, north Iceland\, when Helgi spent a year there with his family. \nHelgi‘s principal objective in founding an exhibition space in his home was to present the work of contemporary artists from other countries in Iceland; at that time there was little opportunity to see international contemporary art in Iceland. Helgi had previously been involved in the foundation and operation of a number of exhibition spaces\, such as Gallery Output\, founded in 1975 with Þór Vigfússon\, Gallery Suðurgata 7\, Gallery Lóa in Haarlem\, Netherlands\, and Gallery Vísir in the Vísir newspaper\, all founded in 1976\, and the Living Art Museum\, 1978. \nIt is hardly possible to enumerate all the contemporary artists who have shown their work at the Corridor in the 42 years it has been in operation. The vast majority are non-Icelandic artists\, some internationally renowned. The artists who have displayed their work at the Corridor make art in a range of media\, and Helgi has sought to exhibit the work of artists representative of other artistic trends than those which have predominated in Iceland\, such as hyperrealism\, magical realism\, neo-surrealism\, the geometric abstract\, and conceptual art. Among them are Karin Kneffel\, Milan Kunc\, Helmut Federle\, Stephen McKenna\, James Rielly\, Jan Knap\, Sigrid Sandstrom\, Robert Devriendt\, Jenny Watson\, Thomas Huber\, Lisa Milroy\, John Zürier\, Urs Luthi and\, last but not least\, the Swiss artist Martin Disler\, who was the first foreign artist to show his work in the Corridor\, in 1980. Many of these artists have established bonds with Iceland and the Icelanders\, and they have enriched Icelandic art in various ways\, such as through teaching at the Icelandic College of Arts and Crafts (precursor of the Iceland University of the Arts)\, through participation in exhibitions at Iceland’s leading galleries\, and by promoting Icelandic artists abroad. Many of the artists have spent time in Iceland\, and some of their art evinces influence from their stay – so the impact may be deemed reciprocal.

DESCRIPTION:Sýningin Andardráttur á glugga með verkum eftir Siggu Björgu og Ásmund Sveinsson verður opnuð í Ásmundarsafni á Safnanótt\, föstudaginn 3. febrúar kl. 17.00. \nListasafn Reykjavikur heldur áfram að kynna ný verk starfandi listamanna í Ásmundarsafni\, þar sem þau kallast á við myndheim Ásmundar Sveinssonar. Nú er áherslan á þjóðsögur\, ævintýri og ímyndunarafl. \nSigga Björg er kunn af hugmyndaríkum teikningum sínum\, innsetningum\, myndböndum og bókverkum. Hún hefur skapað einstakan myndheim þar sem fantasía\, húmor og hryllingur fara saman hönd í hönd. Í verkum sínum þræðir hún tilfinningalífið í allri sinni óreiðu og skapar stemningar sem nær ómögulegt er að færa í orð en með einkennandi stílbrögðum sínum nær hún að tjá ótrúlegustu blæbrigði. Á þessari sýningu vinnur hún meðal annars nýja myndröð út frá íslenskum þjóðsögum. Efnistök Siggu Bjargar eru jafnframt sérstök\, í teikningum sínum blandar hún saman slettum og tilviljun við hárfína nákvæmni og mynstur. Verk hennar eru unnin jöfnum höndum á veggi sýningarsala og á pappír.

SUMMARY:Sigga Björg & Ásmundur Sveinsson: Breath on a Window
DESCRIPTION:The world of trolls\, elves\, ghosts and other creatures opens up in the exhibition Ghost at the window. Reykjavík Art Museum continues to present new works by contemporary artist in Ásmundarsafn\, where they meet in dialogue with  Ásmund Sveinsson’s visual world and his unique house in Laugardalur. \nNow the focus is on legends\, fairy tales and imagination. \nSigga Björg is known for her imaginative drawings\, installations\, videos and books. She has created a unique visual world where fantasy\, humor and horror go hand in hand. In her works\, she threads the emotional life in all its chaos and creates moods that are almost impossible to put into words\, but with her characteristic style she manages to express the most incredible nuances. At this exhibition\, she works\, among other things\, on a new series based on Icelandic folk tales. In Sigga Björg´s drawings she mixes splashes and randomness with fine precision and patterns. Her works are created equally on the walls of showrooms and on paper. \nÁsmundur Sveinsson shaped his imagery in sculpture that spanned everything from a figurative method to an abstract one. He worked in line with the direction and trends of the modernist development of the 20th century and always worked with material and form. He initially drew inspiration and imagery from the local environment\, human life\, cultural heritage and nature\, but later the subjects became more abstract and entered the realm of natural laws and cosmic dimensions. He said that in his youth\, when he was growing up on a farm in the Valleys\, he had come across folk tales and legends. Much of it found its way directly or indirectly into his work. Ásmundur once recalled a memory of a verse that was sung when children were being put to sleep on the farm: \nKeep still\, keep quiet \nWoe lurks in the shadow \nI‘ve heard through the night \nA breath on a window.

DESCRIPTION:Through acts of stitching\, sculpting\, weaving\, fragmenting\, painting\, and recording\, Kathy Clark\, Abdullah Qureshi\, Sasha Huber\, Frida Orupabo\, Hugo Llanes\, and Inuuteq Storch reclaim historical methods of handicraft\, documentation\, representation\, and archiving. Their works digest certain generational histories with a delicate yet deliberate touch\, marked by a tender sentimentality that critically unpacks stories of colonization\, slavery\, racism\, suppression and dispossession\, religious persecution and queerness. The physical-ness of their materials (fabric\, the camera\, a touch of the hands\, the body) mark the works with a cathartic embrace. Each artist examines how we process our personal histories\, our genealogy\, our nationhood\, our sexuality\, and our heritage. \nThe artists of Tracing Fragments examine the complicated histories behind colonial and racial violence\, repossessing terms like power and victimhood. Realizing the brown\, indigenous\, and queer body on their own terms\, each artist imagines what forms this body and history can take. In their distinct practices\, the artists of Tracing Fragments appropriate a certain colonial visual memory as a way to reassemble potential histories and rewrite narratives of oppression and dispossession. \nArtists: Abdullah Qureshi\, Frida Orupabo\, Hugo Llanes\, Inuuteq Storch\, Kathy Clark and Sasha Huber. \nCurator: Daría Sól Andrews

Verkin þeirra eiga það sameiginlegt að rannsaka flókna sögu nýlendu- og kynþáttaofbeldis\, gagnrýna og endurskrifa frásagnir um kúgun og eignarnám og endurheimta hugtök eins og yfirvald og fórnarlamb. Með því að vefa\, sauma\, mynda\, og skeita saman endurheimta listamennirnir sögulegar aðferðir við handverk\, ljósmyndun og heimildasöfnun. Hver og einn listamaður á sinn eigin frumlega máta rannsakar sína eigin sögu\, endurskrifar og opnar á samtal um áður þaggaðar frásagnir þeirra kúguðu. SUMMARY:Erró: Skörp skæri
DESCRIPTION:Samklipp hefur verið undirstaða listsköpunar Errós í yfir sextíu ár. Hann hófst snemma handa á því\, með Meca-Make-Up myndaröðunum 1959-60\, og afraksturinn fram á þennan dag eru yfir 30 000 samklipp. Með því að safna\, klippa\, líma og síðan mála blandar Erró þannig frjálslega saman sjónrænu efni og tilvísunum sem umbreytist í kraftmikil\, sláandi og hlífðarlaus listaverk. Með því ljær hann nýja merkingu þeim aragrúa mynda sem nálgast má í mannkynssögunni\, fréttum\, alþjóðlegum miðlum og hversdagslífi nútímamannsins. \nFrá 1989 hefur Erró gefið Listasafni Reykjavíkur yfir 700 af samklippum sínum\, safnið er umfangsmikil þjóðargersemi sem heldur áfram að vaxa. Í kjölfar nýjustu uppfærslu á samklippum í Errósafninu er þessari sýningu ætlað að kynna verkin ásamt öðrum sem spanna gjörvallan litríkan feril listamannsins. Á sýningunni má rekja tryggð Errós við samklippið\, sem leið til að skapa önnur listaverk\, og sem aðferð til að halda áfram að segja óvæntar sögur. \nErró (f. 1932\, Ólafsvík) býr og starfar í París\, þangað sem hann flutti árið 1956 með viðkomu í Noregi\, Þýskalandi og Ítalíu. Erró var meðal helstu fulltrúa evrópsku framúrstefnunnar á sjöunda áratugnum og tengist ekki einungis endurnýjun fíguratífs myndmáls\, vegna uppgötvana hans á sviði málverka sem byggjast á frásögn og samklippi\, heldur einnig hreyfingum sem kenndar eru við uppákomur og tilraunakvikmyndir. Þrátt fyrir að verk hans séu oft sett í samhengi listastefna eins og súrrealisma\, fígúratífrar frásagnar og popplistar\, væri ógerningur að fella þau undir eina þeirra.

SUMMARY:Erró: Cunning Scissors
DESCRIPTION:Collage has formed the basis of Erró’s artworks for over sixty years\, beginning early on with his Meca-Make-Up series in 1959-60\, and resulting in more than 30\,000 collages today. Through collecting\, cutting\, pasting and then painting Erró has freely mixed and quoted found material\, transforming it into dynamic\, striking and jarring visual collisions. In doing so he lends new meaning to the abundance of images that can be gleaned and culled from history\, current events\, world influences and our everyday lives. \nSince 1989\, Erró has donated more than 700 collages to the Reykjavík Art Museum\, a considerable collection and national treasure that continues to grow. Following the recent update to collages in the Erró collection\, this exhibition presents these works alongside others that span the entirety of his vibrant art career. Throughout the exhibition\, it is possible to trace Erró’s commitment to collage as a step to creating other artworks\, and a means to continue to narrate unexpected stories. \nErró (b. 1932\, Ólafsvík) lives and works in Paris\, where he arrived in 1956 by way of Norway\, Germany\, and Italy. He was among the most prominent figures of the European avant-garde of the 1960s and is associated not only with the renewal of pictorial figuration\, due to his invention of narrative collage-paintings\, but also with the Happenings movement and experimental cinema. Although Erró’s work is often\, rightly\, attached to artistic groups like Surrealism\, Narrative Figuration or Pop art\, it cannot be reduced to any one of them.

SUMMARY:Jessica Auer: Landvörður
DESCRIPTION:Jessica Auer has lived in Iceland and Canada for many years. She feels at home in Iceland but also follows in the same footsteps of the tourist who comes to Iceland in search of a new experience. Since 2016\, Jessica has travelled around the country to document the tourist’s trail\, as well as take photos of those who guard the land\, rangers in Icelandic nature. Her work Landvörður deals with our joint responsibility for nature. It shows us how to touch the land and how we allow it to touch us\, to move us. However\, the work does not solely revolve around those who protect the land or use it\, but it is also about the land itself and how we live on it\, how everything is connected and flows together. Verkið Landvörður fjallar þó ekki aðeins um þau sem vernda landið og þau sem nýta landið heldur líka um landið sjálft og lífshætti okkar á jörðinni\, hvernig allt tengist og flæðir saman. Við erum óteljandi eindir sem eiga sér ótal snertifleti\, erum öll hluti af heild. \nJessica Auer hefur verið búsett bæði á Íslandi og í Kanada um árabil. Hún er á heimavelli á Íslandi en á einnig auðvelt með að setja sig í spor ferðamannsins sem kemur til Íslands í leit að nýrri upplifun. Jessica hefur frá árinu 2016 ferðast víða um land til að festa slóð ferðamannsins á filmu. Um leið hefur hún myndað þau sem standa vörð um landið\, landverði í náttúru Íslands. \nSamhliða sýningunni í Sláturhúsinu verður Jessica með sýningu á Skaftfell Bistró á Seyðisfirði.

DESCRIPTION:The exhibition Long weekend #3 which opens in Midgard Base Camp in Hvolsvöllur on Friday January 27th at 5 pm.\nLong weekend #3 is the third part of an exhibition project\, which first took place in 2021 in Oddson hostel\, an abandoned facility in Reykjavík. The second part took place in 2022 at Hótel Hafnarfjall in Borgarnes.\nThe project\, Long weekend\, is an experiment in making visible some aspects of latent undercurrents in our times and takes on themes such as insistent elements in our surroundings which affect us everyday. The works in Long weekend #3 are an endeavour to capture the multiple sensibilities as well as the various susceptibilities during times of rapid change where time and space have acquired another meaning.\nThe exhibition lingers on the border of a certain distance and a peculiar intimacy while aiming to unravel symptoms and qualities in the zeitgeist. The artists approach the facility like an archaeological site\, a place that contains phenomenal contemporary evidences. Sýningunni lýkur sunnudaginn 29.janúar kl 17.\nLöng helgi #3 er þriðji hlutinn í röð samsýninga sem hófst á Oddsson hostel við Hringbraut í Reykjavík haustið 2021. Annar hluti opnaði á Hótel Hafnarfjalli við Borgarnes í lok janúar 2022.\nLöng helgi er könnun á næmi og ofnæmi í breyttri heimsmynd þar sem tími og rými hafa öðlast aðra merkingu. Verkin á sýningunni leysa úr læðingi eiginleika og ágenga strauma sem leynast í loftinu og leita stöðugt á okkur í bilinu milli ákveðinnar fjarlægðar og sjaldgæfrar nándar. Hún státar af verkum völdum af Terezu Jindrová og Evu B. Riebová og beinir sjónum að auðkennandi verkum sem hafa verið sýnd á þeim tíu sýningum sem hafa heyrt undir Annars konar þekking. \nMarkmið verkefnisins var að sækja í aðra möguleika en skynsemistrúna sem ræður ríkjum í nútímamenningu okkar Evrópubúa. Ætlunin er ekki að dæma rökhugsun og vísindi úr leik\, heldur að benda á fleiri burðarstólpa tilveru okkar í heiminum. Venjubundin vestræn hugsun er meðal annars bundin við valdastrúktúra byggða á kúgun (nýlendustefnu\, feðraveldið) eða nýtingarhyggju sem eykur á félagsleg\, efnahagsleg og umhverfisleg vandamál dagsins í dag. Við teljum að ein af skyldum lista og menningar sé að bjóða þessum kerfum birginn. DESCRIPTION:Specific themes addressed in the exhibitions include spirituality; altered states of consciousness and drugs; wisdom associated with nature and traditional communities; “normality” and institutionalization; cognition and experience mediated by the body; hand craft and slow lifestyle connected with it; the worldview of people with sensory or physical disabilities; discovery and adventure; artificial intelligence; and last but not least\, artistic research itself as a unique form of knowledge. \n\n\n​​The exhibition Fragments of Other Knowledge summarizes a three-year research and exhibition project called Other Knowledge realized at the MeetFactory Gallery in Prague\, Czech Republic. It presents a curatorial selection by Tereza Jindrová and Eva B. Riebová and focuses on distinctive works that were part of one of the ten exhibitions from the series Other Knowledge. \nThe intention of this project was to look for alternatives to the rationalist model of knowledge that prevails in our modern European culture. The point is not to disqualify reason and science\, but rather to point out the broader framework of our existence in the world. The tradition of Western thought is associated\, among other things\, with power structures based on oppression (colonialism\, patriarchy) or extractivism\, which contributes to the social\, economic and environmental problems of today. We consider dealing with alternatives to these systems to be one of the responsibilities of art and culture\, which should stimulate and co-create (self) consciousness in society. \nSpecific themes addressed in the exhibitions include spirituality; altered states of consciousness and drugs; wisdom associated with nature and traditional communities; “normality” and institutionalization; cognition and experience mediated by the body; hand craft and slow lifestyle connected with it; the worldview of people with sensory or physical disabilities; discovery and adventure; artificial intelligence; and last but not least\, artistic research itself as a unique form of knowledge. \nThe exhibition at the Living Art Museum\, realized with the support of our long-term partner Art Without Borders\, brings together all these different themes in one place. Altered landscapes have been addressed through contemporary photography for quite some time\, and here\, the tourism sector plays a significant role.

DESCRIPTION:Ljósmyndararinn Jessica Auer fer í einskonar könnunarleiðangur um ferðamannastaði Íslands og skrásetur umhverfi ferðamannsins. Í myndum hennar verða ferðalangurinn og efnisheimur hans hluti af náttúrusvæðum og áningarstöðum. \n\nFerðamennska birtist sem umbreytingarafl í íslensku landslagi og hefur sterk sjónræn áhrif. Sjálf stendur Jessica utan við viðfangsefnið og horfir úr fjarlægð líkt og gestur í ókunnugum heimi. Breytt landslag af manna völdum hefur verið viðfangsefni samtímaljósmyndara um nokkurt skeið og ferðamannaiðnaðurinn er stór þáttur í því mengi. Jessica er kanadísk og kennir ljósmyndun við Concordia University í Montréal. Hálft árið býr hún á Seyðisfirði og rekur þar stúdíóið Strönd.

DESCRIPTION:Sunna Svavarsdóttir útskrifaðist með BA gráðu í ArtScience frá Royal Academy of Art í Haag árið 2019. Hún hefur undanfarið einbeitt sér að innsetningum þar sem gestum er boðið að taka þátt og hvatt til þess að loka augunum\, snerta og lykta. Innsetningin ‘weight series’ er hluti af áframhaldandi rannsókn sem fjallar um hreyfiorku líkamans með hjálp þyngdar. Uppruni hugmyndarinnar var að endurframkalla líkamlega tilfinningu þegar þungum hjálmi er lyft af höfði og líkaminn þarf smá tíma til þess að endurstilla sig. Slík upplifun varir oftast ekki lengur en nokkrar sekúndur og gæti því auðveldlega farið framhjá okkur en í verkunum býðst gestum tækifæri til að dvelja um stund í þessu augnabliki afmarkaðrar skynjunar. \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:Ummerki mannaldar í litbrigðum jarðarinnar\n\nSteingrátt\, okkurgult\, ryðrautt\, – jarðefnin í málverkum Kristjáns Steingríms minna á að listamenn hafa gert tilraunir með leir og steinefni frá örófi alda. Elstu hellamálarar notuðu okkur\, umber\, sienna\, manganese og kaolin. Þeir muldu steininn og blönduðu jarðveg með feiti og öðrum lífrænum bindiefnum til að festa litinn á flötinn. Litirnir sem Kristján blandar eru gerðir með svipuðum aðferðum. Þegar þeir birtast þá öðlast þeir táknrænt hlutverk og fagurfræðilega merkingu\, því málverk Kristjáns vísa í ákveðna staði\, heiti\, sem búa yfir einstakri birtu\, jafnvel töfraljóma í huga áhorfenda: Námaskarð\, Seyðishólar\, Sólheimajökull\, Rauðisandur\, Betlehem\, Carmel\, Omaha Beach\, Sienna og Bordeux.\nEn þrátt fyrir að litirnir sem hann skapar úr jarðefnunum byggi á löngu ferli sem hefst með sýnatöku\, oft á framandi slóðum\, þá snúast rannsóknir hans hvorki um ferðalög\, jarðfræði\, né efnafræði. Hins vegar mætti tengja þær staðfræði eða kortlagningu\, jafnvel við einskonar leit að erfðafræði þeirra svæða sem hann heimsækir. Því hugsanlega býr jarðvegurinn sem hann safnar á þessum ólíku stöðum yfir líffræðilegri auðkenningu? SUMMARY:Kristján Steingrímur: From Near and Afar
DESCRIPTION:The Impact of the Anthropocene on the Colours of the Earth\nStone grey\, ochre yellow\, rust red – the geological materials in Kristján Steingrímur’s paintings remind us that artists have experimented with clay and minerals since the dawn of time. The earliest cave painters used ochre\, umber\, sienna\, manganese and kaolin. They crushed stones and mixed soil with grease and other organic binding agents to attach the colours to the surface. Kristján mixes his colours using similar methods. When they appear\, they assume a symbolic role and an aesthetic meaning\, as Kristján’s paintings refer to specific places and names that have a particular glow\, even magic\, in the minds of viewers: Námaskarð\, Seyðishólar\, Sólheimajökull\, Rauðisandur\, Bethlehem\, Carmel\, Omaha Beach\, Sienna and Bordeaux.\nBut although the colours he creates from these minerals are based on a long process that begins with sampling\, often in exotic locations\, his research does not revolve around travel\, geology or chemistry\, although they could be linked to topography or mapping\, even a kind of search for the DNA of the regions he visits. Is it possible that the soil he collects in these different places has biological markers? The yellow sands of Omaha Beach still show the signs of the devastating deciding battle that took place there in World War II\, but what secrets does the Bethlehem soil hold?\n\n\nText: Æsa Sigurjónsdóttir

SUMMARY:Á víð og dreif
DESCRIPTION:Listasafn Ísafjarðar býr yfir ágætri safneign sem telur um 180 verk. Hluti af verkunum má víða sjá prýða veggi í opinberum byggingum Ísafjarðarbæjar. Verkin hafa hangið á sínum stöðum í tugi ára og mörg hver lent í gini hversdagsins og horfið inn í undirmeðvitund almennings. Á þessari fyrstu sýningu ársins 2023 verða nokkur af verkunum færð í sviðsljósið á sýningu í sal Listasafnsins. Sýningin er áminning um að líta upp úr amstri hversdagsins og njóta þess sem við eigum. \nValin voru 6 málverk eftir 4 þjóðþekkta listamenn síðustu aldar; Jóhannes S. Kjarval\, Karl Kvaran\, Kristján Davíðsson og Nínu Tryggvadóttur ásamt einum skúlptúr eftir hugmyndalistamanninn Kristján Guðmundsson. Innbyrðis eru listamennirnir ólíkir en samtenging verkanna er óhlutbundin myndbygging þar sem skúlptúr Kristjáns Guðmundssonar myndar brú frá liðnum tíma inn í samtímann. \n\nRannveig Jónsdóttir\, sýningarstjóri

SUMMARY:B. Ingrid Olson: Cast of Mind
DESCRIPTION:i8 Grandi is pleased to announce Cast of Mind\, a year-long exhibition by B. Ingrid Olson. The artist’s show opens 20 January\, 2023 and will be on view until 20 December 2023. Spanning far longer than traditional museum or gallery shows\, i8 Grandi represents a new model for exhibitions. The programming focuses on concepts of space and time\, and the presentations will evolve while on view. The sustained duration of the annual format allows artists to consider how time affects their work\, and the fluidity encourages audiences to revisit the changing installations. \n  \n“Cast of mind” is a phrase describing the way that a person might perceive something due to a certain disposition\, ingrained beliefs\, or even as a more temporary mood or outlook. While the expression succinctly encapsulates the idea of subjective perception\, its component words might also poetically suggest making a permanent record of the act of thinking. Forming a hard copy out of something as slippery as thought is a fitting lens through which to view an exhibition that by its very invitation must be subject to change. How might cognition\, decision-making\, memory\, or instinct be evidenced?

DESCRIPTION:i8 Grandi stendur að mun lengri sýningum en vaninn er hjá söfnum og galleríum. Heilsárssýningarnar eru helgaðar hugmyndum um tíma og rúm og uppstillingin mun þróast sem á líður á sýninguna. Hið langa skeið sem heilt ár býður upp á leyfir listamönnum að íhuga hvernig tíminn mótar verk þeirra og hvernig flæðið hvetur áhorfendur til að heimsækja aftur síbreytilegar innsetningar. Árið 2023 sýnir B. Ingrid Olson í i8 Granda sýninguna Cast of Mind. \nHeitið „Cast of Mind“ lýsir hvernig skynjun manneskju gæti stafað af ákveðinni tilhneigingu\, rótgrónum skoðunum eða tímabundnu hugarástandi. Í stuttu máli endurspeglar heitið hugmyndina um huglæga skynjun en orð þess gætu einnig ljóðrænt gefið í skyn að hugsun sé varanlega skjalfest. Að steypa í mót einhverju jafn breytilegu og hugsun er góð linsa til að virða fyrir sér sýningu sem býður upp á breytingar í sjálfri sér. Hvernig er hægt að skrá ummerki vitsmuna\, ákvarðanatöku\, minnis og eðlisávísunar?

DESCRIPTION:i8 Gallery is pleased to present Butterly / Pétursson\, a two-person show featuring new work by American ceramicist Kathy Butterly and Icelandic painter Eggert Pétursson. The exhibition opens with a reception for the artists on Thursday\, 19 January from 5-7pm and will be on view until 4 March. \n  \nButterly and Pétursson are united in their deeply expressive bodies of work\, as well as in their decades-long\, rigorous dedication to their practices. Butterly and Pétursson’s shared exploration of depth and texture and their attention to detail result in energetic\, viscerally powerful artworks. Both artists explore limits and capacities of colour through their technical mastery of glazes and paints: Butterly challenges the limits of ceramics\, as Pétursson does a canvas.

SUMMARY:Butterly / Pétursson
DESCRIPTION:Í heildarverki Kathy Butterly og Eggert Péturssonar má finna líkindi í áratuga langri skuldbindingu við handverkið\, án þess að þau missi sjónar á persónulegri tjáningu viðfangsins. Sýn Kathy og Eggerts einkennist af samtali við efni og aðferð og næmni þeirra beggja fyrir smáatriðum leiðir af sér kraftmikil\, grípandi verk sem bjóða áhorfandanum að hugleiða þolmörk lita og forma í gegnum færni listamannsins; Kathy reynir á takmörk og getu skúlptúrsins rétt eins og Eggert reynir á málverkið. \nFerli og tími eru mikilvægir þættir í verkum beggja listamanna\, og taka þau hvort um sig mánuði\, jafnvel ár í sköpun verka sinna. Kathy brennir keramík verk sín allt að 40 sinnum til að ná fram réttri samsetningu lita og forms; Eggert glæðir strigann íslenskri flóru af kostgæfni og elju. Áhugi þeirra á eiginleikum efnis og ásækinn áþreifanleiki listaverkanna býr til rúm fyrir áhugavert samspil skúlptúrs og málverks tveggja ólíkra heima. Listamennirnir vinna báðir innan sjálfskipaðra ramma – Kathy eftir formi og stærð\, Eggert eftir efnivið – sem í höndum þeirra virðist ótæmandi uppspretta nýrrar nálgunar.

SUMMARY:Umhverfa
DESCRIPTION:Verkið Umhverfa er vídeó- og hljóðinnsetning eftir Siggu Björgu Sigurðardóttur og Mikael Lind þar sem síbreytilegur og þyngdarlaus hljóðheimur umlykur ágengan myndheim. Lögmál hefðbundinnar framvindu verka víkja og hvikul verkin fá að kallast á og hverfast um hvort annað. Í rýminu birtast myndir sem ferðast á milli raunveruleika og abstraksjónar og með síbreytilegu hljóðverkinu skapast rými án upphafs eða endis. \nSamhliða innsetningunni sýnir Sigga Björg nýjar teikningar á pappír og viðarplötur. Verkin eru unnin samhliða vídeóverkinu og tilheyra sama myndheimi þar sem myndefnið fetar einstigið milli raunsæis og abstraksjónar\, veruleika og fáránleika\, frásagnar og hreinnar fagurfræðilegrar upplifunar. \nSigga Björg Sigurðardóttir (f. 1977) útskrifaðist úr Myndlistadeild LHÍ árið 2001. Eftir útskrift fluttist Sigga Björg til Glasgow í Skotlandi þar sem hún útskrifaðist með meistaragráðu í myndlist frá The Glasgow School of Art árið 2004. Síðan þá hefur hún sýnt í söfnum og galleríum víða um heim. Af einkasýningum má nefna Kling og Bang gallerí (Reykjavík)\, Teckningsmuseet (Svíþjóð)\, Hafnarborg (Hafnarfjörður)\,Yancey Richardsson gallerí (New York)\, Galerie Adler (Frankfurt) ofl. Af samsýningum má nefna Nordiska Akvarellmuseet (Svíþjóð)\, CCA (Center for Contemporary Art\, Glasgow)\, Göteborgs Konsthall (Svíþjóð) ofl.  Verk Siggu Bjargar er að finna í mörgum opinberum söfnum hérlendis og erlendis eins og Listasafni Reykjavíkur\, Listasafni Íslands\, Hafnarborg\, Nordiska Akvarellmuseet (Svíþjóð)\, Zabludowicz Art Trust (London) ofl. Hann hefur gefið út nokkrar breiðskífur\, bæði sjálfstætt og í samvinnu við aðra. Mikael er þekktur fyrir að gera tilraunir og prófa nýtt efni á tónleikum sínum þar sem hann hefur einnig mikinn áhuga á fræðilegri hlið tónlistar og tjáningarmáta þess. Hljóðið fyrir innsetninguna í Ásmundarsal er ennþá óbeislaðra þar sem hljóðheimurinn ber keim af bæði hávaðatónlist og nútímaklassík.

SUMMARY:Dokað við trist
DESCRIPTION:Ekki alls fyrir löngu voru þeir garpar Gunnar Jónsson og Sigurður Ámundason á ferð yfir hálendið. Skyndilega gekk yfir landið mikill stormur og illfært varð til ferðarlaga. Þá voru góð ráð dýr en til mikillar lukku urðu þeir varir við sæluhús eitt\, fjarri allri byggð. Ekkert annað í augsýn en veðurbarið fjalllendið. Náttúran getur verið svo mikil ofgnótt. Í sæluhúsinu dvöldu þeir um tíma og sem betur fer höfðu þeir birgðir nægar. Landslagið í kring hafði svakaleg áhrif á hugmyndaflug tvíeykisins; litirnir sem stöku sinnum var hægt að greina í öllum þessum gráma\, tvískinnungurinn í jafnvægi þess manngerða við náttúruna. Svolítið trist\, en á sama tíma fallegt. \n\nGunnar Jónsson (1988) útskrifaðist úr bakkalárnámi við myndlistadeild Listaháskóla Íslands árið 2012. Síðan þá hefur hann haldið fimm einkasýningar\, tekið þátt í fjölda samsýninga hérlendis sem og erlendis. Gunnar vinnur mest með myndbönd og hljóðinnsetningar sem miðil í verkum sínum en vinnur einnig ljósmyndaverk og vatnslitamálverk. Hann býr og starfar á Ísafirði.\n \nSigurður Ámundason (1986) útskrifaðist úr bakkalárnámi myndlistardeildar Listaháskóla Íslands árið 2012 og hefur síðan haldið ellefu einkasýningar\, tekið þátt í fjölda samsýningu og flutt tugi gjörninga. Sigurður notast mest við teikningar en skapar einnig innsetningar\, skúlptúra\, vídeóverk\, bókverk\, ljósmyndir og leikverk.
