SUMMARY:Exhibition / open studio
DESCRIPTION:We are Ástriður Jósefina Ólafsdóttir and Clizia Macchi\, and we are very excited to invite you to our duo pop up exhibition / open studio / common creative space in the ex Þula Gallery.\nAlthough of different nationalities and not knowing each other until a few years ago\, we have a lot in common: both born in artists families and grown up in small villages in central Italy\, almost the same age\, the passion for aerial sports and the desire for a new start culminated with our moving to Iceland around the same time. We even had our studios at the same address at some point.\nNaturally a dialogue around our creative path has emerged and strongly developed over time\, the idea of building a project together popping up more and more often and taking shape effortlessly.\nOur project has finally come to life and Therefore you are all invited to the opening event from 2pm to 6pm on the 13th of May.\nA selection of old and new paintings will be exposed and available for sale\, and a new joint project will be started and completed during our “residence” in the space.\nThe exhibition will be open from Wednesday to Saturday\, from 1pm to 5pm\, and by appointment outside opening hours.\nSo\, drop by for a visit: we will be delighted to meet you.\nA little bit more about us:\nÁstríður Jósefína Ólafsdóttir studied and graduated cum laude from the Academy of Fine Arts of Bologna in 2013 and completed a Masters degree in Visual Arts in 2016.\nShe is currently working in Reykjavik and has a studio by the downtown collective “Hafnar.haus” situated above Listasafn Reykjavíkur.\nÁstríður has been exhibiting her works from 2012 both in Italy and Iceland\, her last two shows in Reykjavik were held in “Gallerý Núllið” June 2022 and in “Galleri Fold” october 2022 in which she presented paintings from a series she has been working on the last three years.\nThe series is called “Panneggio” \, like the old master’s technique of painting tissue drapings and studying the anatomy of the fabrics. The inspiration comes from a circus activity called aerial silks that she has also been practising in the last ten years. At first the body was present and in communication with the fabric\, later it vanished\, leaving only a trace on the drape\, which became a simple object giving infinite possibilities. She recently added light to the game of building and painting sculptures of fabric\, so the works now look like planets\, suns or dreamlike landscapes\, where a strong source of light\, like a trapped energy\, is trying to break through the fabric.\nClizia Macchi\nBorn in Tuscany\, Italy\, in 1985\, the first steps as a creative were moved in 2010 with photography\, with assignments in Tuscany and later in the UK.\nDuring the years there has been a gradual shift from camera to canvas\, keeping most of the attention on the process of a research within the abstract side of painting.\nColours and mood always come first in the compositions\, whether or not there is a recognisable figure in them. The research on natural shapes and human figures and how they entwine with colours are the main focus in the body of work.\nThe dialogue with literature is also strongly present in some of the series of paintings\, be it with Nordic and Mediterranean mythological tales or specific books or authors. Trying to convey the overall mood of the story in images is in this case the centre of the research.

SUMMARY:Melanie Ubaldo: TRAPO

SUMMARY:Melanie Ubaldo: TRAPO
DESCRIPTION:Specifically tailored for Ásmundarsalur\, TRAPO is the culmination of months of painstakingly painting and hand sewing the entirety of the exhibition space. The work\, in part\, pays homage to the works of the artist duo Christo and Jeanne-Claude and at the same time honouring the humble origins of Ubaldo´s painting practice that stems from trapo. \n“The colorful round palm sized rags that my mom and the other women used to sew\, in our poverty stricken neighborhood\, during my childhood in the Philippines\, out of leftover fabrics\, greatly inspires my deconstructionist painterly aesthetic. These rags are called trapo in my local Filipino language.” \nHand stitching the canvas is purposely employed as a stylistic device\, which is to say a piece of painterly rhetoric- an attempt at an aided serendipity. By covering the walls and leaving only its iconic windows\, the work confronts the audience\, with its scale\, questioning their experience of the space and simultaneously highlighting the physicality and the materiality of the painting. \nMelanie Ubaldo (b. 1992\, Philippines) graduated with MA Fine Arts from the Iceland University of Arts in 2022. Melanie has exhibited widely in Iceland and internationally. Melanie was the recipient of the Svavar Guðnasson and Ásta Eiríksdóttir fund for promising artists in Iceland in 2021. Alongside her solo practice\, Melanie is one of the founders of Lucky 3\, a collective of Icelandic artists of Filipino origins. Lucky 3 were the recipients of the Motivational Award from the Icelandic Art Prize in 2022. Her works have since been acquired by the National Gallery of Iceland and Reykjavik Art Museum and other institutions for their permanent collections and in private collections.

SUMMARY:Katrín Inga Jónsdóttir Hjördísardóttir: A Complete dream 3 - 6 - 9
DESCRIPTION:Katrín Inga Jónsdóttir Hjördísardóttir’s solo exhibition A Complete dream 3 – 6 – 9 in Sculpture Garden juxtaposes works shaped and recycled from various materials. There\, among other things\, about 1.5 tons of concrete clumps from the walls of a neighboring house at Ægisgata 7\, more specifically the outer walls of the artist’s studio\, are visible. We can look at it this way: the studio is a kind of armor for the artist’s experiments in doubt and creativity. The material is loaded with symbolism. Katrín Inga works on the pieces with her body\, and through the process of these works she has altered them just as if they had passed through the digestive tract. A possible alimentary tract of ideas and philosophical speculations about the existence and cycle of man\, sculptural impact-ideas of excrement. The thread of the exhibition is the shame and the rhythm between two openings in the body: the ass and the mouth. What is shame but a gaping wound\, a gaping opening on our bodies\, a wormhole. The exhibition\, Complete dream 3 – 6 – 9\, unfolds in rugged found materials through personal close-ups of the artist\, but there you are possibly in some kind of inner garden\, the inner workings of the body\, a co-humanized landscape. \n

SUMMARY:Katrín Inga Jónsdóttir Hjördísardóttir: Algjör draumur 3 - 6 - 9
DESCRIPTION:iEnkasýning Katrínar Ingu Jónsdóttur Hjördísardóttir Algjör draumur 3 – 6 – 9 í Höggmyndagarðinum teflir saman verkum sem mótuð eru og endurunnin úr ýmsum efnum.

SUMMARY:GERÐUR
DESCRIPTION:Gerðarsafn opnar í fyrsta skipti grunnsýningu tileinkaða Gerði Helgadóttur (1928-1975) á neðri hæð safnsins.

The exhibition places an emphasis on her sculptural works and sheds light on the artist‘s vigorous creativity and her experimental avant-garde approach to creating complex works of incredible range.\n\n\n\nThe basis of the exhibition is an ongoing research project at the museum on the career of Gerður Helgadóttir and the numerous works by her held in the museum’s collection. A humidity-controlled storage space has been set up inside the exhibition to extend the museum’s art storage and thus invite exhibition visitors to view several of Helgadóttir’s works and at the same time ensure the best storage conditions for the pieces.

SUMMARY:Øyvind Novak Jenssen: Slippery Seaweed on Wet Stone
DESCRIPTION:The project is called “Slippery seaweed on wet stone” and will be open until Sunday\, May 28. The artist will be present during the opening. \n“Slippery seaweed on wet stone” is a project based on eider farming. In the summer of 2021\, Øyvind was on an eider island outside of Vega in Norway\, after this he has been fascinated by the idea of the eider house. Traditionally in Norway\, eider houses have been built from materials that were easily available in the places where the houses were to be built\, and they made in the landscape to imitate natural holes and nests. As eider farming has become more industrialised\, the houses have become more and more technical construction wise. Øyvind wants to challenge the building techniques and create a «nature house» and is therefore experimenting with materials and form to build a nest in the gallery. He wants to take the audience into a wondering\, curious and open universe which he orchestrates via the processing of found material from Ísafjörður. \nØyvind Novak Jenssen (b. 1988 NO) lives and works in Trysil\, a small forest municipality in the eastern part of Norway. He is educated at the Oslo National Academy of the Arts (MA 2021) and the Academy of Fine Arts in Trondheim (BA 2017). He is also a trained chef\, and works with methods and techniques from the culinary field. He works with a playfulness in his approach to art – and sees it as an important means of being able to touch on issues around sustainability\, ecosystems autonomy\, our relationship with nature and other issues that at first glance may seem relatively gloomy.

SUMMARY:Øyvind Novak Jenssen: Sleipur þari á blautum steini
DESCRIPTION:„Sleipur þari á blautum steini“ er verkefni sem byggir á æðarrækt.

SUMMARY:Sumarsýning Safnasafnsins
DESCRIPTION:Í sumar standa 12 nýjar sýningar í Safnasafninu á Svalbarðseyri á verkum eftir 15 listamenn og nemendur í Leikskólanum Álfaborg og Valsárskóla.
DESCRIPTION:The exhibition features more than 20 photographs by The Arctic Creatures\, a a collective of three artists — visual artist Hrafnkell Sigurdsson\, filmmaker and director Óskar Jónasson\, and actor/theatre director Stefán Jónsson. \nOn long hikes into the Icelandic wilderness\, the artists play the dramatis personæ in scenes choreographed and staged using found objects as both inspiration and set design. The resulting series of photographs\, taken between 2012-22\, are by turns comedic and tragic\, antic and seriously thought-provoking\, seemingly artless yet artfully canny. \nHrafnkell\, Óskar\, and Stéfan are childhood friends who came of age as artists in Reykjavík during the heyday of Icelandic Punk in the 1980s. Their long treks into the hinterlands of Iceland\, along the shorelines of the West and East Fjords\, are annual retreats from city life to the natural world\, where they reconnect to the environment and each other. Finding inspiration in the shared cultural history embedded in their surroundings — the raw and harsh landscape\, the mystical atmospherics of the subarctic light in summer\, and the remnants of human habitation in long-abandoned farms\, stranded boats\, and found driftwood — they “made the most of the unexpected\,” drawing on their individual artistic disciplines to create these staged tableaux. \nTaken together\, the images strike connections between mythology and history\, literature and art\, and nature and culture\, raising unintended yet urgent questions about how humans experience nature\, and\, in turn\, how we impact the environment. \nA simultaneous exhibition of Arctic Creatures will be presented at Nordatlantens Brygge | The North Atlantic House\, from June 10 – September 10\, 2023. The North Atlantic House is located at Strandgade 91\, in Copenhagen. www.nordatlantens.dk/

SUMMARY:The Arctic Creatures Revisited
DESCRIPTION:Á sýningunni eru yfir 20 ljósmyndir eftir The Arctic Creatures\, samstarfshóp þriggja listamanna – myndlistarmannsins Hrafnkels Sigurðssonar\, kvikmyndagerðarmannsins og leikstjórans Óskars Jónassonar og leikarans/leikstjórans Stefáns Jónssonar. SUMMARY:Jóna Hlíf Halldórsdóttir: Það sem jökultíminn skapar
\nJóna Hlíf (f. 1978) útskrifaðist með mastersgráðu í myndlist frá Glasgow School of Art í Skotlandi 2007 og í listkennslu frá Listaháskóla Íslands 2012. Jóna Hlíf hefur haldið einkasýningar á viðurkenndum sýningarstöðum\, m.a. í Berg Contemporary\, Listasafninu á Akureyri og Listasafni Reykjavíkur. Hún hefur tekið þátt í fjölmörgum samsýningum og eru verk hennar í eigu opinberra safna. \nTextaverk\, tilraunir með efni og innsetningar eru kjarninn í myndrænni tjáningu verka Jónu Hlífar. Texti sem áferð: sem leið til að birta hugsanir\, við að setja fram og skapa samfélag\, eða sem grundvöllur hugmynda. Í verkunum hefur Jóna Hlíf m.a. fengist við fyrirbærin kjarna\, tíma og ímynd sögunnar. Nánari upplýsingar um verk Jónu Hlífar er að finna á heimasíðunni: jonahlif.is

SUMMARY:Homing the Home
DESCRIPTION:For the inaugural exhibition of Annabelle’s home Styrmir Örn Guðmundsson encloses the space. His wallpaper “Subliminal Playground” is doing the ‘homing’\, evoking movement and offering imagination. It “homes” while providing the interior for his three large scale drawings. A premiere for Iceland\, his drawings refer to motifs relating to the Icelandic landscape and his own personal mythology. The works in the exhibition are dedicated to Styrmir’s teacher\, Paul van den Berg from the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam. \nAtagata explores multi-dimensions and uses enchantment as she is led by her inner eye to activate the inner light. This light or unconstrained energies are channeled from the position of her hand-made ceremonial carpets. Atagata will perform in collaboration with Styrmir on the opening. \nAnnabelle’s home is a new project space opening in Reykjavík. As we experience the Copernican trauma of AI\, Annabelle’s home will offer a series of exhibitions that explore empathy\, connectedness and spirituality. To home or “að Heima” is a working concept for the exhibition space\, for the production of and\, inevitable for the experience of art.

SUMMARY:Homing the Home
DESCRIPTION:Í maí mun Annabelle’s Home hýsa sýningar og viðburði sem tileinkaðir eru hugmyndinni um „að heima“ í íbúðarhúsnæði.
