Random Moments

Random Moments groups photographs and juxtaposes abstracts from published literature to visualise plots with images and narratives independent of one another. The exhibition is the curator’s Yean Fee Quai‘s fictitious arrangement, based on actual photographs and literature.

In a period of 40 years, the Reykjavík Museum of Photography has collected over six-and-a-half million film-based photographic materials. Among the collection are images shot by professionals and amateurs.

They have captured scenes and spectacles, events and happenings, celebrities and commoners, routines, everyday things and anything that a camera can snap into pictures. The museum acquires its collection from individuals and companies, receiving the assorted photographs and films in boxes and file cabinets that have long since overflowed the modest archival storage.
For the first two decades, before digital technology, the custodians performed the daunting tasks of categorising, recording, researching and preserving the captured moments, that were slow at revealing visible results. In the latter two decades, when digital photography rapidly replaced film cameras, similar technology readily made the museum’s resources accessible with ease by transformation into an image database.
Random Moments is an exhibition that uses the image search that the museum has established. The retrieving of images with keywords conjures surprising combinations of photographed moments. Each moment is a singularity that becomes related through a particular word.
Contrary to the algorithmic visual search, old-school is the approach to finding the texts to accompany the exhibition—snippets of texts on printed pages of publications call out to or draw into the visual narrations. Whether the pictures resonate with the text, or the words allude to the images, the deliberate attempt evokes the discrepancy or lack of it.

Sýningin Augnablik af handahófi er byggð upp á sjónrænum þáttum sem er safnað saman úr safneign Ljósmyndasafnsins og textum sem fengnir eru úr prentuðum ritum. Þannig er sýningin tilbúningur þar sem þar sem sýningarstjórinn Yean Fee Quai stillir saman raunverulegum ljósmyndum og ótengdum bókmenntum.
Á síðustu 40 árum hefur Ljósmyndasafn Reykjavíkur safnað meira en sex og hálfri milljón ljósmynda. Í safneigninni eru myndir teknar af atvinnuljósmyndurum sem og áhugamönnum sem hafa náð að mynda það sem fyrir augu ber, atburði og uppákomur, fræga einstaklinga jafnt og alþýðufólk, venjur, hversdagsleg fyrirbæri og allt það sem hægt er að ná á mynd. Safnið fær ljósmyndir og filmur frá einstaklingum, fyrirtækjum og stofnunum, sem berast í kössum og skjalaskápum og hafa fyrir löngu fyllt takmarkað geymslurými þess.
Fyrstu tvo áratugi safnsins, fyrir tíma stafrænnar tækni, sáu safnverðir um hið krefjandi verkefni að flokka, skrá, rannsaka og varðveita þessi augnablik sem fest voru á filmu, sem var tímafrekt og seinlegt starf. Síðustu tvo áratugi, eftir að stafræn ljósmyndun tók við af filmuljósmyndun á örskömmum tíma, hefur stafræn tækni verið nýtt til að gera gögn safnsins aðgengileg á einfaldan hátt, með því að breyta ljósmyndum og filmum safnsins í myndrænt gagnasafn.
Á sýningunni Augnablik af handahófi er myndavefurinn sem er aðgengilegur á heimasíðu Ljósmyndasafnins notaður. Þegar myndir eru sóttar á myndavefinn með hjálp ákveðinna leitarorða, birtast ófyrirséðar samsetningar ljósmyndaðra augnablika. Hvert þeirra er er einstakur fjársjóður og þau tengjast í gegnum orð við myndaleit.
Öfugt við myndavefinn sem notast við algóritma, var leitað á gamla mátann að texta til notkunar með myndunum—brot úr textum úr útgefnu efni, sem ýmist kallast á við, eða renna saman við sjónrænu frásögnina. Hvort sem það eru myndirnar sem mynda samhljóm við textana, eða orðin sem vísa í myndirnar, kallar þessi meðvitaða tilraun fram samræmi eða ósamræmi þarna á milli.
